After a good night's rest, and some time to think about things, I'm not sure what to think of the attempted changes from our esteemed [a. k. a., possibly evil] overlords here lately.

The things I like are mostly superficial. I like the blog system [obviously] because I'm often compelled to write, and it helps the downtime at work pass faster. I like the ability to have our own picture albums, but I also rather liked the picture thread.

I'm not sure how I feel about the rep system, however, since I'm not sure what the admins will use it for. If someone isn't very popular with the other members on Gnet, but hasn't broken any rules of the forums, what then? Are we going to be ousted simply because we're unpopular? I certainly hope not.

Also, I'm dubious about some of the things that have occured over the last two days concerning the removal of status names and user titles. Did Albert's [and other users] names get on my nerves? Sure, but then again a lot of things do. Does that mean that I thought they shouldn't be able to have whatever they want as a user title? That's an emphatic negatory. Folks should be able to have any user title they want, even if someone else would find it offensive.

Like I said when these issues were first being addressed, there's a fine line between being a good administrator and making the board fun for everyone, and overlording, and I think that taking away such things like those mentioned above was a good example of possible "overlording".

OTOH, it's easy to see how Albert could be seen as a rather...unwelcomed character. Yet, I wonder if things would have blown up in quite the same way if the situation had been handled a little more discreetly. "Gothic.net" saying that Mondy's comment about feces was "gross" is fine, but trying to make an example out of him in full view of all of Gnet is -not-.

To add to that, as I also said in the mentioned thread, if Mondy -really- bothered me -that- much, then I would use the very useful [if unpopular] ignore feature. In fact, Mondy was on mine for a long time before I realized that, occasionally, he -does- have something good to say that's worth putting up with the all-too-literal description of oral sex in his name, and the horribly drawn avatar.

Do I wish folks would use a little more discretion when picking a user title? Sure. Do I expect it? No. Did I ever demand it? That would be a big, fat negatory. If folks want to be uncouth, borish goofy goobers, then let them! I don't have to interact with them if I don't want to.

As for how folks will perceive this post, I'm pretty sure I'll probably be seen as a "hypocrite" and an "idiot" instead of someone who simply needed time to think about things, and came to a different conclusion than originally, but oh well; I'm fracked if I -do- agree with those folks, and I'm fracked if I -don't-.

Then again, if folks allow themselves to interact with me, it -is- their own fault, and they only have themselves to blame for getting irritated. [Though, sometimes I wonder how much of this "irritation" and "hate" is real, and how much is just taking the piss.]
