DIY yarn dreads
I'm sorry if this is in here somewhere. I did a search and found a wonderful link that showed how to make dreads. I might be tired, but the website didn't have any information on different types of yarn dreads. I'm going to start making my own falls, yay for being artsy! I finally found information on how to attach cyberlox and foam, which is great. Now I just need to know how to make yarn dreads. I'm wondering about really smooth shiny waxy looking ones. Also any effects with two tones of yarn that look nifty. *sigh* tired..ok..i think that's all i needed ^_^

Found something, but not everything.
I found a lot of info on making yard dreads by felting roving, I think it was. Some people also said that you don't make dreads for falls out of yarn, you just use the yarn as is. I still dont know how to make the yarn dreads for falls that have a base colour and then a single one wrapped around it. Hard to describe. Not twisted in. Im not sure how I would tie that together and have it not look crappy. lol

Were you looking at the Quinnster site? They do have some stuff on yarn, under the "Wool" section. I make lots of loose falls, but I'm not into yarn or wool at all. If you wanted to join a forum where you can ask questions about everything hair extension related (yarn and wool too), you could join Heavenly Hair. I'm a member over there, and everyone is extremely helpful with questions. :)

Heavenly Hair
I actually just joined heavenly hair. I have to say that website is wonderful. I was having struggles on cyberlox and got so much information. Lots and lots of links and great tips and information.

i know this is an old thread to bring up, but i somewhat know how to make the yarn dreads just not how to tie them off and have them not looking crappy. Someone should post a tutorial here, as it seems yarn dread falls are this well kept gothic secret. There isnt really information anywhere.

Go to a dentist office and get those little rubber bands from them. Braid in your yarn falls and put the bands on the end. Then, if you want to hide the bands, slip some kind of really small "Finger Claw" over it. Actually, that would rock all things...

www.angrycaninelovestick.org has some great tips too, as well as tutorials and pictures.

Being the owner of a yarn store, I have compiled a list of yarns that make AWESOME dreadfalls if one is so inclined...
Rowan Biggie Print (knitrowan.com) Koigu (koigu.com) Brown Sheep Burly Spun (brownsheep.com) any kind of ribbon any kind of novelty yarn (glitter, sequins, beads, furry, etc.) I've had a couple customers ask me to make dreadfalls for them, and they've been happy with them. I'd make some for myself, but I have no idea how to wear them... (runs off to check out links mentioned above) |
Oh i know real well how to wear them in a few different ways. But ive sat up all night over a hot cup of coffee and come up with a few different ways to make your own... not really the best way but effective none the less. I like shock value and i think these will work. When i buy some batteries for my camera today ill take pictures of what im doing.
Back to painting my nails til the shops open. |
I braid yarn in. Works much easier for me. But then again, I have to take anything I put in out before work.
I love furry yarns for this purpose. |
I do yarn wraps. I could make a tutorial for you if you want. =]

hi there im new here but www.sumsargirl.com might interest you about dreads, cyberlox and hair falls =]
there is more stuff cuming soon =] xxx |
There are also a couple of videos on youtube that some may find to be helpful.
Backcombing Synthetic Hair for Dreads: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wd43lmdbnv8 Sealing a Swirled dread: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UyPYwa64VHw Yarn braid extentions: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Ys5H7G-iUo More yarn type falls: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RtsoiBbGreE Didnt find any videos for roving. I have a friend who does it and she molds the yarn by spinning it between the palms of her hands while using soap and hot water to get the desired shape. She buys her yarn online. I may try it sometime when I've got the patience. Falls work best for those who have jobs that require you to look conformed to the environment you happen to be in. That's my take on it anyways. |
So wait... how do you attach the falls? I mean, awesome tutorial on braiding them on a yarn braid, but still....
I don't quite understand why it's done in such a way. |

http://anachronaut.com/order.html I imagine that if you have shorter hair ... the lighter the falls, the better. |
Weird...
I just sorta made some hair falls and used them as ponytail holders. I pretty much put them on a rubber band... |

Have any photos of the falls you made? |
Soon. I've finished what I think is one set. These falls are fairly small in diameter. I just string about 4 falls on one band. But once I finish this one set, I'll put them on and show you guys how far along I am.

Sadly, they have a tendancy of falling out really easily. Weft clips, do they work pretty well?
I mean, I don't quite understand what a weft clip is. I imagine it snaps on to your hair in a way and stays put. I might hit that guy up for some falls if he'd make them with weft clips. My hair is much too thick for it's own good.... |

I have some extensions with weft clips. They stay put rather well. I'd definately consider them. |

If what I'm about to ask has already been discussed, forgive me. Long thread. short time.
I have found some great instructions on how to make dreads out of synthetic hair, but no luck with how to actually make yarn dreads. What I want to know is this: 1) How do you treat the yarn to turn it into a dread? 2) Is the process similar to that of synthetic hair? how so? 3) Aside from lace and yarn, do I need any other chemicals or materials to create good sturdy dreads? If so, what? Or any suggestions or tips on how to make the yarn dreads good quality and long lasting? thank you so much. I've been all over the web researching this. The hair gods must me snickering at me. |
You need roving wool. Here is a tutorial on how to make yarn dreads using the roving teqhnique:
