A coat isn't really the best thing to start with. Also do you have access to a sewing machine? Not one of those little seeming thingies, they aren't made to be used on heavy fabrics/thick pieces of clothing and so they would not work for a coat, and it is an awful lot of stitching to try and do by hand, I'd say at least 14 hours. Another thing to consider since you don't really have any experience: do you actually have time to make the coat? Even though a sewing machine will make the stitching take only a few hours you are still going to need plenty of time to cut out the pattern and fabric, plus doing any detail work that you wanted to do. It may simply be a much better option for you to start with something less involved and to tackle the coat at a later time.
