I find Rock Band, Guitar Hero, and the like frustrating because I do play real instruments. The object of those games seems far more like that of DDR or Duck Hunt than like playing in a band. Of course, DDR is hardly like actual dancing, and I imagine I'd have a very different experience really hunting ducks (except that the dog would humiliate me there too).

carakitty, don't worry. I'm excited you want to play an instrument! It's a lovely thing to add to your life. Anything that helps you pick out the bassline, the melody, chord changes, harmony is a good thing - maybe soon you'll find you've become so good at it that you can pick it up just hearing a song in the car or in a shop. But the only real way to be good at playing an instrument is practice, practice, and more practice.
