Hydro. I didn't have a clue about the Napier thing because I never read the Batman comics. I've only watched the old Batman(Adam West) TV show, the movies and the animated series. For me, Nicholson portrayed the version of Joker that I grew up with. Maybe that forms part of my bias against Ledger's portrayal.
And for all of the cool lines Nicholson had when he played Joker, Ledger had "Why so serious?"
