Which "old versions?" Old Christian versions, or old pagan versions? The Christian version were primarily religious to celebrate the birth of Jesus (even though there was no way he was born in the winter). For pagans, it was mostly a mid-winter celebration to keep the populace happy. This has been done in many northern cultures simply because winter often leads to cabin fever. If nothing is done about it, the people become violence-prone. But if they have something to look forward to to break up the winter monotany, they are more easily controlled.
