I find a pencil, unless you get really good one, tends to smudge after a few hours. (My fianceé likes that smudged and smokey look. It smudges just at the right time. :P) I am a bit more anal about my eyeliner. I perfer things to stay in place. You can find long last eyeliners, by Mac, Revlon or what have you if you need something that is long wearing.

I've also seen on this site and others that a thin make-up or detail paint brush can be used if the original brush is too ackward to manipulate.
