I saw The Antichrist, but he was pissed off at not getting any royalties and so has delayed the release of the Apocalypse by going on strike until they rewrite his contract. Damn lawyers, now we can't even get a decent Armageddon anymore.

I made a mistake on the name. There's no "The"

Watched it. It was very confusing... and I saw way too much of Dafoes ass...but I appreciate the disturbing atmosphere of it, and liked that it made me kinda sick. There isn't really anything "too" scary though...it's mostly just gore.

I would see this just for Charlotte Gainsbourg. Loved her in Science of Sleep.

Scary movies are rarely scary, but having such graphic details and passing it off as an artistic movie... that's just grotesque.

I hate almost anything that's grotesque. I'm more scared of Flapjack than the original Nightmare on Elm Street

Splatter movies are just sickening though. Ugh. I hate those. I can't even stomach the Saw movies.

I watched it a few times actually. While I'm not too fond of Lars' pretentious undertones I think he makes damn good movies (and my opinions of Dogme 95 have roller coastered at times too). Antichrist was a decent flick with some moments good to save for your friends who'll know nothing of the source if you show it to them. Then their shock and disgust ensues as it's meant to.

Yep. Good film.

I liked it too. Some of it is gratuitous shock-mongering but that's Lars von Trier for you, you have to expect some degree of contrived controversy in his movies. He's described as a kind of 'enfant terrible' but sometimes his attempts to shock seem more like 'enfant with a Korn t-shirt and eyeliner'.

I remember this. I remember walking out of the theater in a daze. It was a mindfuck for me, but I really appreciated the artistic feeling of the film, as well as the powerful message plot.

I agree, though, that it was quite grotesque.

I love how Antichrist is so visually compelling. I don't think the plot is its strongest point.. it's the cinematography. I'm watching it again tonight.

Post Good bad taste versus bad bad taste. No one rent Hot in Cracktown.

AntiChrist isn't Trier's best (that raging fucking genius) but it's a good example of shock art with purpose...unlike the peice of shit I rented yesterday. Has anyone here heard of a film called 'Life is hot in cracktown'? Basically an array of different dramas set in the hood surrounding several crackheads and gang bangers and their problems.

Well needless to say, I rented it thinking there'd be some taste and/or commentary but instead got an urban ode to all the fucked up shit that plagues Los Angeles. Not to mention it was like a poorly-made crime/drama companion to City of God (a gem so brilliantly made no film can combat, quit while you're ahead Buddy you dumb fuck).

Watching this amatuer attempt to point fingers at our society, we see a gang of trannies, a six year old steal his parents dope money, and who could forget a tank of oxygen viciously pumped into the arse of a defenseless old man? The last one was kind of funny, especially watching it with two close friends.

Of course, all of the actions depicted can be dismissed as trash with the one figure who says, "WELL THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS EVERYDAY IN REAL LIFE"-such true words. And myself, being a fan of unsimulated cinematic horror, I'd be the first to say that in defending filmmakers like Trier; but directors such as Budyy Giovoinazzo shed no art in their execution as the commentary is minimal with these events being glorified with the crime-drama loving audience this film is directed towards. YES, GLORIFIED. I DON'T CARE ABOUT THE ONE LITTLE GANG BANGER WHO PROTESTS PROCEEDING THE **** IN THE BEGINNING OF THE FILM, NARRATING THE SEQUENCE WITH FAST PACED HIP HOP. No actual gang-banger will watch this movie and question his actions, they'll just replay the fucking scene over and over again with fist pumps of nostalgia.

And not only that, but the backstories and central dynamics of this pathetic movie are both formulated and weak. Once again, Gio is trying to decide whether he wants to say something or just please the audience. Well what he really did was make a film so bad I got two of my friends pissed at me for killing the mood (of course that's my fault trying to rent a movie stoned off my ass). But thanks for ruining my night, Life is hot in cracktown. I'd rather be on crack then subject myself to any more discussion of this tasteless shit. And I guarantee you I'd make a better crackhead than any of characters Gio attempts to outline.

Now excuse me as I watch some Trier, Waters, Clark, Korine, and other GOOD EXAMPLES OF REALISTIC SHOCK CINEMA.
