Exclamation Making your own clothes from scratch.

Does anyone here do it? I've designed a few things from just fabric and thread with a sewing machine. It's not easy, but very rewarding. I made two skirts, legwarmers for my legs. And a scarf.

Has anyone else here ever made their own clothes? x

I don´t know, I think it´s a fun challenge. I´m currently trying to figure out how corsetry works. I´ve done all the other stuff - shirts, pants, skirts, jackets, prom dresses... you name it, I´ve probably made it. I love making clothes. =)

I made a pair of tartan jeans from scratch.
They're in the DIY thread.

I just started getting into the whole knitting sewing and crocheting thing. I made a skirt from a pair of tripp pants and now I am making a skirt from a pattern. I hope to be able to knit a pair of socks for myself though it seems incredibly hard.

" legwarmers for legs "

You think?

I made some drainpipes, gloves, chokers, and T-shirts.

I've made some skirts and dresses but have yet to attempt a shirt, I am somewhat hindered by my lack of a sewing machine.

I'm seriously awful at making clothes from scratch. Which is why I generally just buy cheap things and then alter them.

yup - oversized band shirts scoop cut and taken in.

but a fabulous sewing machine REAllY makes a huge diffrence. i've used a singer, and it was pretty awful, and you can't go full speed anyway. but even on a 30 yearold Bernina machine, it's just like the equvilent of an orgasm in sewing terms
Berinia is the best, and if you can get your hands one one, good job! (damn plastic machine to fucking hell)

I'd like to do it, I did a design course for soft furnishings, I'd like to try clothes making tho and ought to finally get round to it.

I have made clothes for dolls and teddies tho, I've made a couple of goth dolls that I adapted the patterns for.

I've been looking into making my own clothing/costume items lately as well. Some of you may have heard of it already, but a friend of mine recommended the threadbanger site (www.threadbanger.com) as a good resource for this type of thing.

I don't like sewing machines so it takes a long time for me to make anything, even failed home-ec because the sewing machines are scary. Got over it and made on outfit and hand stiched the cuffs. Knitted a scarf. Usually I make curtains, wash clothes and things of that natures when sewing. The lines are easier to work with.

Probably my most inventive addition to personal fashion is switching out buttons and zippers, mending and adding small elements to make it unique.

Both my mother and my grandmother sew and I've never used a machine in my life. I'm a failure at housewifey-type things, so I usually just alter stuff I've got. I recently took in and added buttons to my work vest and was pretty pleased with the results, considering. I've been looking into getting a cheap starter machine for like $150 at Target or Sears.

Mending isn't so bad. However, I know what you mean, any large projects are simply out of my reach. It took over a month to knit a wash cloth. Curtains take less time, sewing by hand, but it still takes a long time.

I tried to making my own clothing, using only a chainsaw and some duct tape. Needless to say, it didn't work out well.

I would love to make my own clothes but I don't have a sewing machine and I wouldn't know where to start. I suppose, for me, it would be trial and error. I have a few designs on paper that I would like to make one day...

The only thing I've made from scratch and haven't just bought and altered was, a dress for a stuffed animal lion when I was seven or eight, and that fell apart within seconds.
XD

I'm a cosplayer.

Making costume is the very foundation of the whole imitating idea.
