Music Finally, an entire forum devoted to talking about Doktor Avalanche, the drum machine for the Sisters of Mercy. You can talk about other bands, or other members of that band, too, if you want to be UNCOOL. |

oh god...introductions...i hate those things.
my name is david, i'm a music education major at a college in Wyoming of all places. Most of you probably have more people in your city than in this whole state. i'm the ONLY one who wears black on campus, though there are a good number of punk rockers at least. (even more stupid emos though) but yeah, i'm a tad bit quirky, hence the nickname. and yes guys, any form of lute counts. I'm not so good with fretted instruments, save the viola de gamba, but i did play bass guitar for a really horrible heavy metal band when i was 17. My main instrument is viola though, and i'm in the process of improving my violin skills as well.

Hi David! Bet you can't guess who I am!
I also play viola. David and I were stand partners. Viola is the best instrument in the entire world, and I will sit on anyone who says otherwise. Since I only weigh about 115 that probably wouldn't do anything...unless I got a couple of friends.
Wow, that was random, I think I need to go take a time-out...

good to see you stand partner thingy who wont be playing in sympoony with me anymore >8(....i do admit seeing you try to sit on somebody would be quite the spectacle! anyway slipshodsally theres always time, the nice thing about having a hobby is that it's generally done at your leisure. Except when you get to my level and it becomes a 2-3 hour a day committment, and some of the love for it is sapped, though never completely gone

Nice, Circle V. Especially the cello part. Do you like the band Rasputina?
Xnguela: I'm about 5' 2", maybe an inch taller in shoes. Bit of a midget, really.

Your right. Wouldn't do crap. I'd be afraid to sneeze too hard around you. I play guitar, bass, and am trying to pick up the violin. In the hundreds fo years that damn thing has ben around you would think they would get off thier high horse of tradition and figure out how to put inlaid frets on the damn thing.

Because there's no danger of the strings 'buzzing' on the frets, which may be overlooked in a band but probably not in an orchestra?

I didn't like what I've heard much, but I've only heard very little. I prefer Apocalyptica.

Yeah, the nails are the first thing to go. Mine haven't extended past the ends of my fingers for about eight years now.
What does Apocalyptica sound like?

i'm not a huge apocalyptica fan...their cello's are good instruments, but it must be something about their pickups...they don't sound like cello's sould. either that or i'm too used to brahms lol. anyway violins don't have frets because of the tention on the strings. There is a ton of preasure comparedly. If you put frets on violin strings, the higher rate of vibration combined with the added preasure would cause the frets to cut through the string in a very short time, or the string to cut into the fret.

Apocalyptica is a cello quartet (I think) that often covers rock songs, especially Metallica, using acoustic or electric instruments. One of my favorite songs by them has to be Bittersweet, with the singers from HIM and The Rasmus (I believe). While a bit over-dramatic, the song is quite beautiful.

I play the guitar, although I'm not really one for practicing much. I just play for myself, stringing weird chords together, sometimes even writing songs. I like it best when I can plug into a nice tube amp and just make improvised noise and punk riffage. Never had the desire to be a "guitar hero" and spend all my time trying to emulate Yngwie Malmsteen or whoever. I actually find guitar solos totally uninteresting, for the most part. I do appreciate technical guitar work, though. I love a rapid barrage of hardcore or black metal riffing, but it has to have passion and substance, otherwise it's just meaningless muso wanking.
Oh, and for all of you who like string-based/modern chamber music type stuff like Rasputina - you should check out an ensemble called Rachel's, who make really pretty, melancholic instrumental pieces. For something a bit darker: Amber Asylum, led by Kris Force, who plays on several Neurosis records.
