Christmas... I hate it.

I can't stand Christmas.

More correctly, I can't stand the commercialized sugar-frosted crap it's become. It's bad enough that early Christians stole the original holiday from the pagans and bastardized it into something other than what it's supposed to be (though, to be fair, I'm gladdened than many of the pagan symbols and traditions of the holiday have survived). But the fact that big corporations (and, in order to try to keep up, many smaller businesses) have turned Christmas into the Corporate Spending Season pisses me off to no end. It's one thing to see Halloween displays in stores a month before Halloween. Same goes for Valentine's Day, Thanksgiving, and Easter. But to see Christmas displays as early as July is simple ridiculous! (It's also interresting to note that in many places, or, at least, many places that I have been, Independence Day displays don't go up in earnest until just a couple weeks before July 4th.)

What also pisses me off is that Christians will defend the meaning (their meaning, that is) of Christmas all the way, even though they themselves will spend months spending money just to get first the presents they intend to give to others.

...

Okay, I really don't expect any responces... I just wanted to bitch about this, so I did.

Christmas to me is not a religious thing. My family is not that much into God, but we hold to it as a fun thing to express our feelings to each other in materialistic things. ^.^ I spend all my money ever Christmas that I had saved on my family, it's pretty fun. I blow it all out on a shopping spree which I'd never do for myself becuase I'm too much of a saver.

I don't like the Halloween issue either; but I love Christmas.
The old versions were religious celebrations; but now, despite the commercialization of it, it has become an archetype.

But why wait for a specific day to do that? Why not do it in the middle of summer? (For example.)

I love Christmas. Why? Because it's something that a lot of people have already agreed, is a month of joy and cheer. Say one day, we found out Christianity was a lie. There was no way out of it, there was 100% proof Christianity, Judaism, etc, was all a lie.

I would hope we keep the sense of Christmas. Giving to others, instead of receiving. Giving thanks for the things we have, and celebrating a holiday with friends a family. Having a date that many armies recognized, and cease fire, even if it's just for one moment, before they must go off to war.

While it may have been turned into a corporate holiday, I do not know. Even if it has, I would like to keep that message alive. Giving everything you have, just to see the smile on someone elses face.

Which "old versions?" Old Christian versions, or old pagan versions? The Christian version were primarily religious to celebrate the birth of Jesus (even though there was no way he was born in the winter). For pagans, it was mostly a mid-winter celebration to keep the populace happy. This has been done in many northern cultures simply because winter often leads to cabin fever. If nothing is done about it, the people become violence-prone. But if they have something to look forward to to break up the winter monotany, they are more easily controlled.

I find that a noble ideal. Unrealistic, in my opinion, but noble nonetheless.

Of course, if we can steer the holiday away from the corporations (or the corporations away from the holiday), then it's quite plausible.

And I agree; the message is what matters. Sadly, many people have lost the message.

Because this way you don't have to shop in the evil summer where you want to sleep the day away in 110 degree weather with the sun frying you in your own sweat. And you get to decorate a pretty pine tree? It just seems right in the winter.

Why steer it away from corporations. Looking from a somewhat, in my opinion, strategic point of view, they could immensely help in an effort to "Reclaim" Christmas. Just get it to be profitable, to promote that message.

But that's the thing. The only message the corporations give is "buy this to give to others, and don't forget to tell them to buy that for you!"

I'm sorry, I just don't think that capitalism and Christmas mix very well. When we're speaking of "messages," that is.

I think they can mix, it'll just take some work.
A simple modification of the base message would work in my mind.
Change it to, "Buy this to give others, even those you hate, and be happy with what you get".

Don't forget, "Fuzzy Warm Feeling", is a very good seller.

I love the archetype of Christmas (I believe it started out as a good idea), but I also hate how freakin' EARLY it starts!

There is only one place I understand its premature presence, and that's the craft stores. Hey, if you have to single-handedly produce 200 wreaths for a holiday and you're the only one who is doing the work, you WANNA start as early as possible...

Other than that, dammit!

I mean, don't mind the "Happy Holidays" thing either (although the "Christmahanukwaanzakah" thing was a bit much... and kinda dumb), but Halloween is more important to me than my birthday, and it ticks me off to no end to see the Christmas holiday decorations all ready to sell and OCTOBER'S NOT EVEN FREAKIN' HALFWAY OVER!!!

It disgusts me to walk in every store and hear Christmas carols ring-ting-tingling over the freakin' intercoms... the day after Halloween... and everywhere you go it's ads like "Wouldn't (insert product here) be a great gift to get your loved one for Christmas?" I know the rest of the world may not celebrate this, but I live in America, and we do have a big holiday called Thanksgiving that we celebrate. Sell cooking appliances or something! Tableware! Nice dishes! Advertise food! Gah! Why jump straight to the damned trees? And why the HELL is Santa Claus in the mall in the middle of freakin' NOVEMBER?!? I swear I want to kick him in his jolly fat GUT for even taking the job that early...

::exhales::

Sorry...

I just hate blatantly overdone commercialism... it takes all the personal aspect out of a holiday. I personally don't touch or think about ANY holiday any sooner than the month in which it falls, with the exception of New Year's Day (out of necessity), or something I have to prepare intensively for (like a hyper-complex Halloween costume--then I'll start on my birthday). Don't get me wrong--I love Christmas shopping for my family, and the look on a loved one's face when he/she opens a gift that I chose especially for that person, but everything should be done in good time...

Though I guess it depends where your purchase is being shipped from.

"Some" work is an understatement. I honestly can't think of any corporation that isn't worried about anything other than making the most money possible.

On ebay I wanted something and the shipping was going to be 35$. Don't know where from because as soon as I saw that I went on my merry way.

All I read was, "FIGHT THE MACHINE MAN THE MACHINE IS EVIL WORSHIP SATAN YEAH MAN SO MUCH SATAN I LOVE!"

Just you reworded it. Now go beat yourself silly with a nine iron. Also, I hate christmas not because of any the reasons you stated. I hate it because people need it to be nice one day out of the year. It goes to show how people really are.

In other words, you hate christmas for reasons already stated. Which makes you (at the very least) one of us.

Congratulations. You're a hypocrite. Of course, we already knew this, but what the hell...

You hate it because of commercialization and because they stole pagan traditions (who cares), I hate it because people tend to be phony on that day/month. You never mentioned that, and it goes deeper than that, it seems that avariciousness has a strange hold on people during that day.

I think people should get three gifts just like that imaginary character, Jesus. If I really had it my way, I'd just make it so that Christmas would be totally de-christianized and made into a nationalish holiday so anyone can celebrate it without it offending their religion. I think we should have more holidays, like the Romans, but they should be for all people.

I just hate it in the same way as I would hate eating syrup directly out the tin.

I also love it, however... for the break from college and for the awsome Christmas dinner we always have. Sweet chestnuts alone are worth all the bright wrappings, stupid useless gifts, and annoying TV shows. :3
