Ever Mistaken For An Emo?

There is nothing more irritating then being called Emo when the person is clearly not. I get this ALL the time. I'm in high school and I will be on my gloomy o'le way and the prep chicks who normal say something about my 'nasty' black lipstick will scream emo at me. Any one else get similar harassing treatment?

mm, yes, it happens from time to time. no one (around here) that isn't in to goth in some sort of way doesn't know what goth it and places everyone with black shirts or hair in the emo-category...

Yes, used to get that last year when I was living in the Emo capital of Norway. The locals had only ever seen emos, and nobody knew what goth is, so everybody just automatically assumed I was some sort of oddball emo. I found it rather amusing - preppy teens would walk behind me and sing the Emo Song when I was on my way to the mall to do some shopping. I was always at least five years their senior. Lol.

it use to, but only cause i had that dyke emo hair, and only wore black

nowadays, theres no fuckin way id pass off as an emo

people in my suburb, they do know about goth, but, im the only one in my suburb!

a little recently though, at school, a teacher (one of those "still has a brain of a 13 year old" teachers) asked me "are you emo?" i said no im a goth. She said "oh ok!, i asked these emo kids before if they were goth and they got really offended, so i just wanted to make sure"
we then went into a huge discussion about goth for most of the lesson

kill emos

I used to and still do get called an emo. I was most often called that when I was at school, now not so much unless some preppy girl sees me walking down the street. There really aren't that many goths around where I live unless you go into the city.

No. Never happened. It's a greater likelihood that they call me Greaser than Emo.

Uh, never mistaken for an emo. Probably wouldn't really care anyways.
Have gotten some mildly annoying dominatrix jokes though.

no. Truthfully though, I'm not even entirely sure what an "emo" looks like. I guess I'm too old to relate. I asked a friend a while back to describe emo fashion to me, and all she said was, "they wear converse, skinny jeans, and white belts". *shrugs*

I am, however, very tired of morons walking up to me and asking me, "are you one of those goths?"...and also of the people who ask, "are those tattoos permanent?"

Lameness and idiocy are WAY too rampant in society today.

I once got asked if I was a gotholic person XD. Provided yes the man was drunk, he was a regular at a bar I worked at and he always asked me why I wear so much black, usually I'd say something like "I'm colour blind" and he'd laugh his ass off.

But emo, no, never been accused. Usually "are you a witch/goth/amish person" are the questions I will get.

I used to get mistaken for an "emo" kid all the time, because I used to wear heavy make-up. Now I wear none, and the same people call me goth, a much more desirable label--though a misinformed one nevertheless.

No one has ever called me emo or goth. Most people probably think I'm a FOB or a monochrome nerd. XD

But the preps at my school never really laughed at anyone for being emo or goth, and never used them as an insult. Heh.

Anyone who is goth never calls me emo. Anyone who is either goth or not knows I am well too adjusted to be emo, lol. Strangers do call me emo alot, mostly because of my hair. I am growing it out and it is kinda shaggy right now. Not really emo, but almost. Who really cares about my hair anyway? My hair doesn't mean I adore MCR.

Yep. I've been called emo. I usually laugh in secret because it's clearly they can't see the differense between "a horse and a zebra", and is foolish enough to think they can. And proving their stupidness by shouting zebra at the horse. Maybe it's because in my city no-one really knows what an emo is, so they lable everyone wearing black "emo".

And the emo's themself (I usually call them dwf or dww for deathwish fjortis(swedish for very immature person acting mature) or deathwish wannabes) ruins everyones reputation by saying themself that they are "punk", "newpunk" or "goth". Yeah right.

Everyday, sometimes more than three times a day but, we have no class (or society) here so, if they're wearing black and/or dark make-up they are, at once, an emo. so sad now that both gay, queer and emo are used as insults. I use queer a lot and i'm accused of being 'insensitive'. *huff*

I was going through an airport once (Chicago Midway I think) and a little 5 or 6 year old grabbed his mom's hand and pointed at me and asked her "is he emo?"

She just said "I don't know Jeffery, were going to be late."

I took it as a compliment!

You can't be seriously horrified at being called emo as though people are going to understand your exact subculture like it's a zoo exhibit info plaque. (Not that too many folks can even be bothered with reading or getting those right either)

That not withstanding, I've been politely mistaken for emo AND Wiccan by one coworker but when I told her otherwise, she was cool.

My 12 year old sister would...
But seriously, I've never been called emo, mostly because I choose flowing skirts instead of skinny jeans.

I don't wear skinny jeans, and get emo shouted at me by certain unimaginative souls. I think they just see somebody dressed a little differently and try to attach any label, which loosely fits, to it.

I've never been called an "Emo" that I know of. To be honest though, I somewhat find that term to be ridiculous. It just seems to sound weird to my ears.

"Oh, I'm an Emo."

Most of the time I just snicker and roll my eyes when I hear the term.

However, I once tried to use "Gothic" as a generic term to quickly convey an idea about who I was for sake of a conversation once. The girl replied that it was impossible for me to be Gothic because I was not addicted to heroin and didn't talk about satan or death all the time. Sadly, she was being completely serious.

Another thing is that I do have a really good friend who is totally emo. He isn't really whiny, though. He is very intelligent and fun to talk to. People want to assume I am emo when they see me with him. Yeah......he is dressed like an emo, and I am dressed either like an industrial kid or a vampire, I can totally see where the assumption comes from *sarcasm, sarcasm*.
