While I understand your trepidation of popular rhetoric of the states and admittedly I'm confident that the US would much rather embrace fascism long before it embraces communism.

But we can not ignore the fact that there IS a seed of class consciousness arising in the people of the US. You can even see it here on the boards. What we once had as hardline libertarians have changed to red anarchism and a plethora of members who embrace socialism or even some are admittedly communist.

And that's something that's so interesting about our situation today. The people have never before until the advent of the internet, had such access to communication.

We live in the age of "prove it". Ideas that are presented on the web are viciously contested. Having to make justifications for a point for example, improved my writing skills in school. I didn't learn how to write good essays in school, I learned by sparring with Saya, H_P, and others.

Today, it is so much easier to politicize the disenfranchised and the apathetic. We are educated on several fronts now due to popular access to others.

True Mao mobilized a peasant class, but look at what's become of his revolution. Peasants working for almost nothing making cheap junk for capitalist Americans.

As for "sparring" on the internet, I enjoy it. But I've learned far in school concerning literature, writing style, and theory than anywhere online I find a lot of people don't even have basic grammar skills online!

Do we really politicize the disenfranchised? The voting trends say otherwise. Certain groups came out in droves during the presidential election to vote for Obama, but where were they during the congressional races two years later? M.I.A. Look at the issues that drive the middle class in this country. Gas prices are more important than critical long-term social issues. Women running out in droves to buy 50 Shades of Grey. You want to read 300+ pages about a woman being abused and degraded? HUH? Perhaps I'm out of step with my country...

And China is primed to have another socialist revolution. There are workers' demonstrations in China all the time.

That's also true.

That really depends. Again, I'm slightly pessimistic about the working and middle class of the USA. But then things such as socialized healthcare is starting to become very important to Americans. You certainly shouldn't throw our generation under a bus so quickly. Many of them don't even flinch at the word socialism or communism. Many movements have been cropping up all over the place. It's very common to find young and old on the streets handing out pamphlets for socialism and anti-capitalism posters. To be honest, I'm confident that the first places to be more likely in the USA to embrace socialism would be the coasts followed by the south. Even the most ardent pro-capitalists seem to only view capitalism on a micro scale. I can't really think of any person who's been politicized one way or the other to favor the dominance of big corporations for example. Hell, they try to redefine the problems of capitalism by calling the corruption we're under as some other deformed version of capitalism. Think about that one for a second. Even the economically conservative are inventing words to distance themselves from their own cognitive dissonance.
