Class on Marxism Today
I have a question for you guys.
Would you, by any chance, be interested to pay 100 bucks for a three month long online comprehensive class on Marxism?

But if I work to complete the class on Marxism, shouldn't I end up owning the class?

Oh, the irony.
Seriously, no, unless I needed the course credit. Is it worth 3 to 5 CEUs?

If it were offered at my university, I would take it in a heartbeat. However, I would much prefer a physical class, I guess I am just old school that way. I have had plenty of exposure to Marx in Literature and History classes, and have read enough on my own to understand the theory quite well, and subscribe to some of the theory as well. I think a full fledged class would be interesting though.

Oh, this wasn't a hypothetical question. The philosophy institute I'm working for might offer this as their first online class on February. Nothing sure yet but I thought some of you here might be interested.

When would it start, if it did?

I would actually be interested in something like this because I think that it would be a helpful background to the sociology subjects that I'm going to be forced to do next year. :|

But seriously, it's at the beginning of February. Don't get too excited, though, it's all still just tentative.
I got assigned a first draft of a syllabus by January 4 and we'll see from there.

Here's a little heads up on what we've thought of for now.
The class would probably be thirteen weeks, divided into an introduction and three modules, to be paid for separately. That way people don't have to pay in full but rather pay thirty five bucks for a month of education, and if they're interested then there's the next month. This would also be more inclusive for people who heard of the class too late to join at the beginning but can still come in by the second or third modules. I'm trying to see if we can make it even cheaper for the online version, 25 bucks a month or so. People who would be most interested in Marxism tend to correlate with people who don't have much cash lying about, so the cheaper the better.
First class would be free, an introduction to Marxism, that anyone with an account at the institute can access for free.
I'm trying to come up with overarching themes for each module but in no particular order here are some probable subjects for each week:
The development of Marxism in Marx's own life.
Leninism and the Soviet Union.
The State and Microfascisms.
Marxism in Latin America.
Post-colonialism.
Art and Liberation.
Feminism and Marxism.
Communism and Human Rights.
Violence and Marxism.
French Maoism and the Cultural Revolution.
Marxism Today.

Not when its easier to just rent Marx and Engel's "Communist Manifesto" from theh library or by a $14 copy from Barnes and Noble.

Nah man, the communist manifesto is important as a historical text and some of its points are still relevant, but it's a very outdated writing and doesn't even begin to explain marxism as a methodology. In fact it's not even the best of Marx's writings; his magnum opus is obviously Das Kapital but besides that a better writing for understanding capitalist society and thegoals of communism are The German Ideology and Critic of the Gotha PRogram, respectively.
You did give me an idea though, including the Communist Manifesto to study what parts of it are still relevant and which have been completely discarded by whom.

Almost none. The pop culture basics of Marxism is enough but interestingly it would help more if students are versed in classical liberal theory, like Rousseau, Hobbes, Mill, and a little Kant, just to understand the marxist counterparts to ideas like human rights, globalization, free enterprise, the social contract, and so on.
Knowledge of Hegel will be important but that is included in the course.

I completely agree. It would be nice if more people knew about Rousseau, Hobbes, Mills, Hegel and Kant. They may look at the concept of socialism a little differently.

If any of you guys is actually interested in this don't 'purchase' the class yet. Right now it's for viewing purposes and we're still working the kinks of the online seminars.
But you can see the syllabus.

The Marxism is the same philosophical and economic doctrine. Has the right to be together with other doctrines and thought directions

This class has been awesome so far. Today we discussed the philosophical concept of the State, and a local high school teacher joined us. She's Chilean and lived during the Pinochet regime and had very awesome opinions in regards to the use of violence.
