Hi. I'm angry.

Surely you feel that way too, sometimes. Well, what's your method for venting? Typically, I post distempered blogs, or in more uncontrolled situations fall to the ground clutching my head and sort of whisper-screaming. The latter seems more appealing to me at the moment, though some day I will learn to create realistic people or sandbags in my mind, which I will attack relentlessly until I feel better. T'sbetter than slicing up pillows.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr... *stomps off*

I breathe.

I know that it sounds patronising, but it really helps. When you start feeling angry it triggers a physical reaction that winds you up even more. The start of this chain reaction is that your breathing becomes faster and more shallow. If you take time out and deliberately remind yourself to breath, slow down your respiratory rate and take nice deep breaths then your body will start to return to it's normal stasis and you will feel a lot more able to cope and a lot less angry.

Now.. that being said, I am also a great fan of the 'singing along to really really loud angry music at the top of my lungs while having a great big cry' school of thought. I find that this helps not only to release some of that pent up energy, but also as a creative outlet.

Physical exercise will burn off that energy as well. You could go for a run, ride a bike, take a swim or play some sport.

The thing about all of these suggestions is that they are band-aids to help you through that crisis phase when you feel like you are going to beat the shit out of someone. There is obviously an issue at the base of it all and that is something that you need to work at. Until that issue is sorted through then it is just going to be like putting band-aids over an infection. The problem is still there, waiting to get angry and sore and red again.

I control my anger through a balance of excercise and pot smoking

I yell and scream. And punch things. I also listen to music and write.

I used to throw potatoes at the inside of my garage door (very satisfying but messy!), but then I bought a new house with a roll up garage door, which is too thin and could be possibly dented by a potato, so now I just growl and curse under my breath.

Maybe if you cook the potatoes first? They won't dent the door then.

I agree with breathing deep and/or butchering a really good agry song. I also write. I find that sometimes things I write when I'm angry are the best thing I've written that month. On the other hand, sometimes anger can have a negative effect on writing ability, but either way is a good vent. It's also good to find someone you trust and just bury yourself in them. I do that alot.

If all else fails, a good cry isn't always a bad thing.

Breathing is very crucial!

I normally throw things around or hit stuff. It feels awesome but it's not good.

I write furiously and listen to music that's soothing or funny, so then I can't help but feel better.

And cry. I cry really easily when I get angry or frustrated. It's annoying as hell. The trick is to use your tissues wisely and avoid hyperventilating.

I was suggested this by a friend: tear up bits of paper into straight lines. It's stupid and repetetive, yes, but if you focus on getting the lines straighter and straighter, you eventually lose some of the tension. It is sort of like controled destruction.

Sadly, I still wish it involved a large metal pole or imploding buildings or some such thing

I hate to be redundant, but I use Qigong. It's pretty much my solution to everything right now. I do it when I'm a little freaked out (nightmare, giving blood, just in-general nervous), I do it to wind down before going to bed, and I do it when I'm angry or upset.

I try to do that aswell. It takes alot of self-control, though, which can be hard to come by in certain situations. Hemp weaving or sketching helps sometimes, because it forces you to focus on something other than whatever is bothering you. I've gotten into the habit of counting Rosary beads, not necessarily keeping up with the number, but passing them through my fingers one by one. I don't know why, but it calms me.

Oh, sorry! I posted it in another thread, so I guess I didn't think to post it in this one.

Basically, it's a meditation style. It's based on Chinese medicine. I have a meditation I do that's very relaxing.

That actually sounds quite effective. Any articles or such that might descripe the process to a beginner?

Actually, according to Wikipedia, there are currently more than 3,300 different styles and schools of qigong. If you don't mind waiting a day or two, I'll just draw out the meditation that I do and post it with an explanation.

If my fairy cake teleportation skills were what they used to be, I'd send you a fairy cake that we had to make in DT Food today to cheer you up.

My fairy cakes are LOVELY. Honest.
