These "Permissions" are really annoying

I can kind of understand not letting very new members post links to keep spam down; but why the hell am I not allowed to send PMs? I've got over 100 posts. I'm certainly not going to start sending "BIIGERPENIS30DAYS!YOUBUYYOUBUY!" to other members.

What pisses me off the most are the time limits on searching and the ten character limit.

The reasons for not having PMs seem like they're too old for me.

If you want to talk to someone privately, it's not like you need this website to do it.

you do if they don't have their email/IM in their profile. Plus it's just stupid to have a PM option if you don't let your members use it.

Or if they don't have IM. I've run into this problem already. It's not that big a deal, but it would be handy.

So ask them for their email address.
To create an account here, you must have an email address.

And it's not stupid to have the function and not use it.
First of all, some of us can use it.
Second, there are LOTS of functions available that we don't use.

Wait...so what you're suggesting is that we have to start a thread, or post off-topic in someone else's thread and hope they'll see it? to ask someone for their email, just to send them a quick private message?

That is annoying, senselessly complicated, and it makes no sense. Can anyone give me one reason good that they should restrict the ability to send PMs to poeople with...what? 500? 1000+ posts?

The trouble with posting email in a public forum is that it brings the spam in. Since posting mine, I've apparently acquired $7.2 million, and only Mr. Kawaan was nice enough to inform me. He's really adamant that I get it as well. Nice guy.

First of all, there is a thread for posting emails already.
Second, if you're clever, your email won't get picked up by spam bots.

For example--my email address could be described this way: I have .longhair. and I like to swim in .deepwater. I use yahoo.

Take the shit between the dots and put it together.

But it still doesn't answer the big question of why some of us have PM and some don't.
It's entirely arbitrary that I can and Despanan can't. Why would your solution of just asking someone for their email only applies to them and not us?

It does apply to us.
I can still ask for someone's email.

As a choice, not a necessity for lack of PM.
I've received several PMs by several members. That alone proves that some enjoy it and use it.
So why do we have it and they don't?

Mildly amusing to confuse them by talking to them about squirrel hotpots at first - then just a total piss off.

Jillian, I don't know. I'm not the one who made it this way.
I also don't care, though.

Agreed. If the concern is about spam, spammers wouldn't wait around for 500 posts just to say "New LOTION better than ViAgRA!!! Made by a REAL DOCTOR!!!1 clic hre"

I don't think spammers would stick around for more than fifty, either, though.

Quoted for truth. I've managed forums before, Spammers rarely make more than three posts on a forum. It's ridiculous that I can't send PMs when I have over 150 posts. I think we've established that I'm not a spammer.

It's really sort of daunting to think that I've got to reach 500 posts, before I can send PMs. It seems more than a bit excessive. But, maybe the admins have had bad experiences with spammers. So, I don't know.

Well, honestly if you think about it, perhaps it's also a measure to discourage trolls. Trolls can be a bit more persistent than spammers. A pity.
