Fashion DIY tips and gratuitous plugs. And hair. Hair! Flow it, show it. Wait...no. That's some hippie musical. Nevermind. |

Everyone complains about the summer, but...
...what do you do about winter? I've gotten the hang of surviving the summer, but am at a loss for what to do about the other end of the spectrum. I've fallen in love with the NW USA, but it's FREAKING COLD. Not good for a girl in thin, tailored articles.
I'd love to hear your ideas.
I've already decided I'm saving for some kind of wool coat. Other than that, no clue. I do a lot of crafts/sewing.

boots, an extra layer of thin stockings if ou prefer them to opaque ones, scarves or shawls, knee length or longer coats. Coats that go in at the waist look better than the big puffy jackets - but if it is freezing ...wear what is warm.
what do you mean by what do you do about winter?
moisturise your skin. It dries out.

You could try insulated boots, long underwear, and lots of layers. You could also try socks made for snowboarders and skiiers. I own a few pairs and they keep your toes dry and you won't get overly warm in them while inside.

I go for the Victoriana in the deepest deep of the Norwegian winter. Wool stockings, layers upon layers of skirts and tops and a fur coat. Layers are really good. Else, make certain youīve got some good boots that are warm and donīt let in water (or melted snow). I donīt know what the climate is like in your area, but well, it canīt be worse than where I come from, so... :P
Oh, and if it gets really cold, wool keeps you warm no matter what, especially if the garmentīs a bit baggy.

You don't need clothes in winter.

Finally, someone agrees wiht me on winter. Being in Minnesota isn't fun, so here's what I do:
Army Surplus Clothing. I got a nice Camo BDU cold weather coat with liner, for $6! Invest in a good pair of boots and wear wool socks, you'll be good next winter, trust me.

I wear a long velvet coat, with DM's in the winter. I also sometimes wear tights with socks and a pair of cut of yoga type pants on underneath a long skirt which can be quite warm.

A full fur coat, yes. The one I have looks very elegant, though. I wouldnīt normally wear one, but in the coldest parts of winter there isnīt anything that will keep me as warm as the coat. Itīs inherited, so I justify wearing it that way. The poor creature was dead anyway some sixty years ago.

Unless it's below 30 I'm outside in a t-shirt and pants... So I don't really see why people have issues with the cold.. feels great out..
On the other hand.. summer is utter crap and I wish the season would mysteriously disappear.
Fall, Winter, Spring, Fall, Winter, Spring... sounds good to me.

For the winter months I normally don a heavy vintage French naval officer's wool greatcoat that was a fortunate discovery in the basement of a military surplus store. Quite stylish, yet comfortable and warm at once. And, as others have mentioned, layering is an excellent way to insulate oneself against the elements.
