DIY Hair

There may or may not have already been a DIY hair thread, but to be honest, I was too lazy to look in depth. I did notice the cool DIY accomplishments, but I figure that it would be nice to have a thread dedicated to hair. Not 'gee, what should I do with my hair?' or 'do you think it's safe to bleach my hair with household chemicals??' No. I'm more interested in seeing what people do with their hair. In other words, I'd like others to post photos of neat hair styles or DIY extentions, accessories, etc. I'll start:

DIY hair stuff and things.

This is my recent addition. It's made from black and red tubular crin, red foam, as well as black and red synthetic dreads. I plan on adding more to this particular set when I have more time.

This set is a single fall made from black, blonde, and red synthetic dreads. I'll also be adding to this eventually.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1.../DSC_04501.jpg

This is the set that took the longest to make. It consists of wire protector, air tubing, black and white foam, silver spray paint, and an aviators cap (my hair was too short to mount falls).

My next set will mostly consist of white and black tubular crin, which will be accented by black and white synthetic dreads, rexlace, and foam. I don't imagine they will be done anytime soon, since I need to order some new material.

Thanks for letting me waste not only your time, but board space as well

I do lots with my hair. Just recently, I had a 10 inch HH #1 weave only on the top part of my head, which I could style into a little mohawk. I also braided in silky white KK into a ponytail I pulled the rest of my hair into. I took them off and dyed my hair black.

I mostly do loose, but I also make Rexlace falls. Loose like toyokalon falls, microlinks, and the like.

I'm sorry I do not have pictures of my hair with them or my falls. Currently, I am making black and grey/silver 12 inch medium/thick DE dreadlocks to be worn on top of my head, as if I were to have an undercut. Maybe cornrow the sides of my head into a pattern, and use leftover grey/silver jumbo KK (or silky) as accents for the cornrows. This I will definitely take pictures of. Dreads are very laboring for me, I've only made 16 so far in two weeks. In the end, it pays off.

I'll also be making a set of black and white dread falls with transitionals, eventually. I don't braid them in since a) I'm too lazy and b) I'd have to take them out for work anyways.

If you ever do get the chance to post photos, I'd love to see them

What's the difference between KK and toyokalon? I don't mean from a technical perspective, I mean from experience. I've never used it.
I'm also curious how you go about making your dreads. Do you boil them? Steam them? Palm roll them?

I used to steam mine until my steamer broke. I've been boiling in the meantime.

Pretty much all I've ever done so far.

The first set was made out of black and white foam, brass eyelets, weft clips, and black/silver metallic looking ribbon. After thinking about it, I've thought about taking them off weft clips entirely and mounting them on some synthetic hair weaves.

This is black synth hair cornrowed in with some silver string. This, I think looks better until I can get the two combined.

There's really not a difference. They are both the same, except that toyokalon has a curl at the end and usually silky KK is stick straight. The name goes for the shape, rather than the texture.

I make my dreads with the wet towel and iron method. After backcoming, I place the dread over a towel that I sprayed lots with water. I do this sitting on the floor, holding the top of the dread with the heel of my left foot. Then, I twist the dread smoothly, battling out poking stray hairs and loops. I stop halfway, set my iron to the lowest steam setting (so you won't melt the hair) and as soon as the steam rolls out, I place it above the dread, careful that the iron doesn't touch it. Just above that the steam is close enough, but the iron itself not leaving a pressed mark agains the dread. I put down the iron, twist down to the tip, and seal it again. For the ends, I twist to the last possible point, and have the iron flatten, but not too hard. When the dread looks good, I snip off the ends in an angle, to create a neat point.

My way of describing sounds confusing, but it's the best I can say for now. I'm very tired at this moment.

I do not have a steamer, or money for a steamer. Hell, I barely have enough money for the hair, but I manage. The wet towel and iron is the "ghetto" version for a steamer. I know people who use tea kettles. They sell their dreads and get very positive reviews. I've used the boiling method, and all it does is make your dreads very soft. If you are looking for more solid dreads, backcomb more than you would for a steamer. It'll make the dreads more solid.

I personally prefer steaming. I hate standing over a pot of boiling water. However, I can make more if I boil. I agree that they're a bit softer, but I also go over them with my flat iron. I could never make dreads for the purpose of selling them. Too much work involved to just turn around and sell it to someone.

You can pick up a cheap steamer for like $30, but then you run the risk of breaking it (like I did ) *sigh*

That would be my friend Dark Echo. Not only does she have mad photo taking skills, she's good at braiding hair.

I'm sorry to hear about your steamer. Watch out for those sales in hardware stores.

I also cannot stand selling dreads. It's enough for me to make them, and have my body ache all over. I like making them, but I'll only do it for myself or really close friends. If I have a group of at least 5 or more people, then I'd consider selling them.

The worst part of selling them is you may get a picky customer who'd just reject dreads you spent four weeks to finish, while you have to be busy with your private life. I've seen it happen, and demand full refund, and make you pay for the cost of him/her shipping it back to you.

I'm starting to make hair falls and actually I'm making yarn falls as my very first fall. I want to make falls with crin but I have no clue where to buy it and I doubt it's in a Michaels or any other craft store, not even a Wal-Mart.

I also tried to join the Heavenly Hair community buuuuuut it appears they have forgotten me as I made the account request a couple weeks ago and not heard from those guys one bit. (A little help and a reminder to them would be appreciated, I know some of you are on that site. Please? ^.^)

You mix up a strong batch of red or bright blue or purple coolaid <minus sugar>, then lean back in a chair or bed and let your hair soak in it for awhile. I think you have to have long hair. But the dye in the coolaid soaks into your hair. I think it's only temporary though. It could look good if done right, back in the day... <80's>

I wish tubular crin was something that you could just pick up at the local craft store. I hate waiting for orders! Did you make those, or did you buy them as a set?

I'm on Heavenly Hair under this same name. It doesn't take long for the administrators to get back with someone. Have you tried joining again?

I made them. I was originally going to braid the crin into my hair but it's hard and I'm lazy.

Saddiction, I don't mean to sound like a moron, first, I love your hair. Now here's the moron question, how do you do it? I've had virgin hair most of my life. I have long hair. My mom get used to do these crazy elizabethan hairstyles for me but I totally love your look. How the hell do you do it? Is it hard? I've seen it on many people but never liked it. My mom get used to do long braids for me mixing them with velvet ribbons, etc.

By the way, I have pics of me on the picture post thread. There's nothing to see after all. I'm having problems with photobucket again.

Saddiction, I got the photos and I'm putting them here. Here are a few specimens of my boring hair.

My wedding day, elizabethan hair, don't know if you can see it from the veil:
http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...cture066-1.jpg

This was before I was going out:
http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...32007006-1.jpg

This is a night out town, my hair was ummm...a bit curly:
http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...n/IMG_1223.jpg

Okay, now that I've bored you to death with my hair, any suggestions? Please don't tell me to dye it. I really want to know how do you achieve your look.
