Emo - Help me understand.

Hello.
As some of you know, I recently made a somewhat retarded post based on loose and incorrect assumptions about the emo musical genre.
Now, having accepted my fish-enhanced bitchslaps, I would actually like to UNDERSTAND the Emo genre, not just knowing it's origins.
So what I ask you now is to help me understand the actual origion, not just what genres it was borne from.
What was the point then? What kind of music is in fact emo? Names of a few good emo bands so I can study them? What does it sound like today? Characteristics? Stuff like that. If possible, backed by authentic sources :)
I love knowladge, and I hate it when I get stuff wrong, so this time, I am gonna get it right I hope.
The same actually goes for Gothic Rock. Yes, sure, I know a few bands, I know their origins, I even listen to a few. But I am not sure I really UNDERSTAND it.
If you have any patience left for me after my latest failure, your help would be appreciated :)

Well, to each his own I suppose, but those are fucking awesome bands, and since Anarasha enjoys Evanescence, I'm pretty sure by his standard they'll seem like choirs of celestial muses.

Blarg..Oh Emo..A subject i never stop hearing about.
I'm gonna leave at the doorstep my feelings about emo, and just give you the skinny on this 80's subculture, which became the bastardization it is today.

As far as i can tell you, it all started around the 1980's, mostly with the band Rites of Springs. They added emotional lyrics to the work, and soon that caught on. As all fads in the 80's did, it died, but it was later, around the 2000 It had risen once again, BUT it took mass media by storm, mostly due to fashion, acts related to the scene and
Blablabla history blablabla

The real reason for Emo music, roughly, is to express emotion to a point. Punk, yes they had that sort of thing, and so did goth ( Oh no! I lumped Emo and Goth into the same category, drama drama drama), But they changed how the music sounded with the lyrics as well. It wasn't about anger, or stuff. It was more sensitive, and ...Well.. Emotional.

Still, names of bands were listed already (and "Ubergoffs" were rejecting.), so i suggest studying the roots first. It will give you a better idea of where it came from and how it came to be?

(Yeah, My history and crap might be a bit flawed, i dunno... But the advice is decent, dammit.)

This enlightened me a bit as to the origins of emo, but I got the point of emo having emotion-influenced lyrics, but how does that exclude obvious mistakes like the one I made, placing Evanescense as emo?
By the several fish-enhanced bitchslaps I recieved, I believe it is safe to say that they are in fact not emo. So how do you distinguish?
What are the common characteristics of the emo sound?
I am very curious as to learn everything I can about this, if nothing else then to prevent myself from further spreading misunderstandings.

Youtube Rites of Spring and Youtube Evanescence, they don't sound similar, they don't sound REMOTELY similar.

Emo is an offshoot of punk, so it will have some punk traits buried in the emotion.

Evanescence is a bad alt rock/metal band lead by a woman who is so egotistical she chased the other founder out of the band and at the same time ensured she'd never write a good song again.

You are right, they do not sound similar. The fact that I dislike the emo music I managed to youtube is a different matter though. I believe I got enlightened quite a bit through this, and I will hereby never refer to alt rock bands as emo ever again, I can promise you that.
Also, this has inspired me to do some extensive research on the music genres I think I know about so that I will never get them wrong again.
Next up is the gothic genre.

I liked the instruments of some of what Jawbreaker has done, but the vocals do not speak to me at all.
In my search of Embrace, I came across a different band and got very disappointed when I realized that they were not the ones I was looking for. They did not speak to me either I am afraid.
Dag Nasty were the ones of the emo bands I have been checking out that I liked the best, but I believe I shall just leave the genre be for true fans. It doesn't really do it for me I'm afraid.
Some of the instrumental work of the emo bands is awesome though. Vocals are very important to me though.
