yes I have been called emo, once by a guy selling roses at the Renaissance Faire, even though I was dressed as a pirate. and two months later I was shopping at walgreens and these two fake n bake tanned chicks yelled ''hey emo girl, remember when you slit your wrists it's down the street not across!!'' or some lame crap like that. I guess it was my black and pink hair at the time that made them think so. If anything I dress more boho than emo. I wasn't really offended at their assumptions, just confused.

yes indeed. when I walk around at school or I see a friend in the street they call me emo. I get annoyed of like that. but always when I say I'm not emo, they say "well what's the difference? is horrible at all" seriously what do you mean it's awful? they just do not understand, like the rest!

Iv never personally been mistaken for an emo, but seeing as I have short (black) hair and the most worn color in this city is black it doesn't really surprise me. However contrary to this I have an Industrial friend who gets emo shouted at her every now and then in the city, which makes even less sense as she looks more like tank girl than any emo I know.

The whole 'Goth' scene is pretty much dead anyway(ironic, huh?) so not too many people expect to see one anyway.

And for that matter, if you actually call yourself "goth" or "gothic", you lose all your goth points anyway.

I've been there plenty of times. Living in Kentucky no one knows goth but they know emo. So if I'm walking in or out of school people scream emo at me. They usually get beat after that but still. But i dont blame them. They dont know any better

People can be so nauseatingly narrow, at times.

Some years ago, I spoke with a young girl who was convinced "Goth" only applied to extremely large clothing with metal hanging off it, and Crow makeup. I henceforth vowed to confuse her with tailored jackets, combed hair, and a heightened politeness. Not just her, but that was the start.

I haven't had any particular issue with the confusion of people. There've been teenagers now and then, but people are generally intelligent for the moment of contact, but that may have to do with my different style. I've been called "vampire" and "Johnny Depp" more than "emo."

Why do goths supposedly "hate" emo?

Please do enlighten me. I'm not talking about stupid people in general, but "hating" someone because they're "an emo."

Because emo is something that is pretty much a very shitty identity, but there's really very little difference between a goth or an emo.

Goths just don't want the bad cred.

The only reason people say "Emo!" as soon as they see someone wearing black is because...well, the gothic subculture is really almost dead compared to the emo subculture. Hardly anyone remembers what goth is, but emo kids are filling the malls every weekend. It's not something to get all insulted about.

Have only been referred to as Emo once in my life, and solely as an online compliment. While my baby brother seems to recieve such comments all the time in High School, simply for being slender and wearing jeans with his naturally dark hair. Nothing that I find truly insulting, since most people use the term as a purely aesthetic adjective. And unfortunately have to agree with Mariner also on the fading activity of Goth, but in some ways am more sympathetic towards real post-harcore Emo on this point. As it is that scene which is now facing the full brunt force of pop cultural repossession, whereas Goth had been the primary target in the late 90's.
