A friend and I were thinking about getting canaries, and I asked the lady in the shop about them. She just grunted. Fucking mole. With that personality and level of rudeness how can she work in a petshop... bitch.

First piece of advice,

Don't get a small cage , they need to be able to FLY up and down, not just flutter . A small cage and the inability to fly properly will cause the muscles to become wasted. Many of the bird cages sold for small birds are extremely unsuitable, don't fall for the pretty designs, they are simply a moneymaker.

The cage should be longer than it is tall.

One around 3 feet long 1.5 feet high and 1.5 -2 feet wide with small gauge/close spaced wire. It may be worth getting someone to build you one from scratch if you can.

Canaries who are a bright red colour ( red factors ) require special dyed food to keep them red other wise they fade to a pale pinkish white.

Males are the singers.

You should also get hold of some natural wood branches. You can buy them from petstores with metal plates to hold them to the wire, or if you don't want to fork out for those, then Apple tree branches are a good choice, but ONLY if you know for absolutely certain the tree has not been sprayed with any pesticides. Remove the bark and boil the wood for 10 mins, allow it to dry and then it's safe to put in the cage. Natural wood branches are better for the birds feet than standard dowels, because the varying thicknesses of the branches exercise the muscles in the feet.

I'd love some Zebra finches when my cockatiel has passed on. I'll have to modify the cage though.

hm. If I end up getting them - I am thinking of getting a 200$ cage. Not one of those tiny cages. I have no idea exactly how big it is though. am getting it from the hardware store I work at. I'll measure it next time they put me up in garden and hope nobody asks me about diseased plants. Cheers for all the info (:

I have them too. I can understand - but if a customer asks a question I answer them. I don't grunt as a response. And if someone is being stupid or annoying... I smile whether it is fake or not. It doesn't matter whether the smile says fuck off... its just basic courtesy. I can understand if I was asking stupid questions and poking and oohing and aahing over the animals that she might be annoyed... I wasn't.

meh. I am over it though.

Hey, they said milk chocolate, NOT chocolate milk. Skim milk makes them slightly more healthy, and they still taste really good.

Edit: slightly less unhealthy would be more appropriate.

Yeah, I understand.

I work in customer service as well, and I answer their question. I don't just grunt in response.

Good point.

You guys don't get those any more? That sucks, I'm pretty sure we still get them here in Australia, I've had some fairly recently.

Could they consider me because it's cute?
I really dont think so. Im talking from experience here. There is a slight chance it might work though.

Had a funny little talk with one of my favorite customers from the store, he asked me I was always looking so sad. I gave him the usual answer "I can't seem to lose my V card, and the women here don't seem to want to help."
