I've heard their songs at clubs, have a few on various soundtracks and compilations, saw them live and enjoyed the show very much, but I'm not particularly a fan. Part of that stems from how much I dispised the Goth kids back in my Industrial days. I think I'd be much more open to their music now.

I can't say 100% for all the other special edition cure cd's, (because I don't own them), but in the booklet accompanying the Pornography double disc set, it states clearly: "This compilation compiled and produced by Robert Smith. Digitally remastered by Chris Blair at Abbey Road Studios, London." Now whether or not it was originally Smith's idea to re-release all of them I cannot say. But I do recall reading something where he stated as such, some time back. Possibly on their website. Or a magazine somewhere.

The set is actually pretty nice, now that I'm looking at it. It is a fold-out box, with a slip cover cardboard sleeve, all drenched in the original Pornography art work. And the 2nd disc has 14 tracks, including several demos and live versions. And there is a 'Rhino' logo on it, which I've never seen on any other cure releases. One thing I've always found interesting about the Cure's earlier stuff is that their demo songs usually have different lyrics than what finally winds up on the album(s).

Oh, and I just wanted to clarify an earlier comment somebody made about the Glove. The Glove was a side project Robert Smith did with Siouxsie and the banshees guitarist (or basist?) Steve Severin, in 1983. The title of the album is Blue Sunshine. Smith also played guitar on one of the banshees albums. (possibly more than one, not sure).

I don't recall the cure ever releasing any music under the name Cult Hero, but they do have an early song with that title. The only names I know of them ever playing under is Obelisk and The Easy Cure, later dropping the word Easy...

Sorry Demon Eyes, that'd be illegal. ;-) But yes. You should invest in an i-pod. then all you need is your own, legally purchased cd's, and a cd-rom. I'm investing in my own by month's end. Its only 400 bucks for the 60gb video ipod. *drool*

My husband has an I-Pod, and he adores it. He's usually poking around on I-Tunes looking for new songs to download on it.
Call me a fucktard though, but I still like purchasing CD's. From time to time I like making my own little compilation albums from my collection - either for myself or friends.

That's why I want an iPod. 400 bucks is pretty steep, but if you consider the 30gb iPod is 300 bucks, might as well spend the extra 100 and double the capacity and battery life. I usually burn mix cd's too, to play in the truck, cause I drive 820 miles a week for my job and need music. swapping cd's is a pain and can be rather difficult since i drive a 5 speed. You can tune an iPod (or most any mp3 player) to a blank radio station and have endless, commercial free tunes. Plus i can copy all my cds to it and not have to worry about scratching them. just put them up in the closet. the thing holds 25,000 songs, after all...

Not a bad idea. I guess if there is no other way, then I'll just buy it. By the way, how big is the screen on one of them i-pods?

I believe the view screen on the video iPod is 3.5" corner to corner. Not something you'd really want to watch an entire movie on, but if i'm not mistaken, there's a way to connect it to your tv.

as for legalities, well, that's totally on you to do as you wish. just keep in mind that the music industry is hardcore about file sharing and they have the government behind them. its being prosecuted as heavily, if not moreso, than if you were to walk into any store and walk out with an arm load of cd's or dvd's. carrying with it 3 years of prison and $25,000 in fines for each offense. they have teams of people that do nothing but scour the net and p2p programs looking to catch people uploading content. the government now is forcing isp's to hand over data on their users whose bandwidth exceeds what they consider to be normal usage. i watched a program a few weeks back on court tv that was specifically about file sharing and had a pannel of a few people who'd actually served time in prison for it. granted, its unlikely that downloading a few songs here and there will get you busted, but the thing with file sharing programs now is that most of them do not operate on a central server network. that's too easy to get shut down. instead each user functions as part of the server. so while you're downloading one file, you're uploading 10 others, to whichever user is requesting it from you.

Sony has pulled a good one too. They've started incorporating a little program called a rootkit into their audio cd's that installs itself on your computer the first time you insert that cd to be played on your pc. it monitors and limits the number of copies that can be made. If you haven't heard about this before now I can give you a link to an article about it. people are seriously pissed off about this, and tho sony denies it, or was denying it last I heard, there are claims that this program cannot be removed without causing damage to the system.

Anyway, didn't mean to jack.

Yeah, I know, it's wrong, so I don't really do much downloading. I do remember hearing something about that though, but never really got any backing to the claim. If possible, and if it's not too much of a hassle I'd like to read the article. Thanx in advance ExDis.

Here's a link to one of the (many) articles on sony's rootkits. Sorry for the delay. I lost track of the thread. Just do a search on any engine for "sony+rootkit" and you'll get tons of articles about it.

Back on topic.

I was playing the Cure's Head On The Door cd today on my (80 mile) drive to and from work. Man that cd brings back tons of high school memories about so many people and things. but anyway... To those fans of their ever-immortal cult classic 'Close To Me,' just out of curiosity, which do you prefer? The original version, without the sax or the later version that had all the jazzy goodness? I just realised today that the original doesn't have the sax and trumpets in it. It's been years since I heard either.

As for The Cure ,I can only listen to them at certain times. My older sister gave me her greatest hit album by them.I quite enjoy despite not listening to it enough.I got a CD made for me by my friends mum who is a big fan of them too.I prefered that one more because the songs she picked were darker than the songs on the other. But out of all I've heard "Boys Don't Cry" is one of my clear favourites.

What do i think of the Cure, hmmmm....

I like them and they are one band I adore. However, I can take but so much of Robert Smith at one time. I will listen to the Cure, maybe once every month now, since I ran it into the ground as while back when I was depressed and wanted memories to remember. Sometimes the best torture is self torture. So a few songs I have trouble listening to and the others I do not, I grew tired off. So I put them away until they seem new once more.

Vale.

Boys Don't Cry is a great classic cure tune, yes. you should watch the movie that takes its name from the song, based on a true story. oddly enough tho, they chose to use a cover of the song for the film's title track instead of the original cure version.

Smith is an eccentric moody fellow, and his music definately reflects it.

I don't like Boys Don't Cry for some reason.

But I do adore Pictures of You, A Night Like This, and Lullaby.

I've always been told that every goth loves Pornagraphy, but I can't say I've ever heard anything on the album.

I do like Disintegration, though.

i have to agree with oddmusician, i prefere their newer stuff. pornography's a good album, but my favourite album by them is probably the last one 'the cure' (stunning originality of the title there).

While I hold a special spot in my heart for the quirky, synthy songs from Japanese Whispers, I love Disintegration and Pornography with a passion.

I like some of their music, but not everything, it depends a bit. My favourite cd is wild mood swings, but that's probably because it's the only one I have (I used to have disintegration too, but I wasn't really fond on it so I gave it to my boyfriend, who is probably listening to it now with his new girlfriend - excuse me, that's something for the whining-board).

I absolutely love the caterpillar, it makes me so happy. It's one of those I-love-the-world-and-everything-that's-on-it-songs (damn, I'm such a hippie).

You should listen to Nouvelle Vague's version of a forest, I think I like it even more than the original song. They have a lot of lovely covers of songs from Joy Division, the Sisters of Mercy, PIL,...
