My hair is fried.

Back when I was blonde and hadn't touched the dye before, I had CRAZY soft hair. Now it is red, broken, frizzy and fried. Renouncing the dye is not an option. What can I do to get my hair back to its natural lustre and softness (or as close to it as possible)?

I have fine hair so a lot of product will weigh it down. When I can I wash with one of those stupid shower caps so I can go about three days without washing it if need be, it just gets oily fast so I hate it. I also blowdry every time I shower because otherwise my bangs get fucked up and my hair sits flat on top of my head. Um, and I straighten/curl it a lot.

I know I should cut back on both of those. Anything else I can do? Would a hot wax treatment thing wreak havoc on my color?

I've recently bleached out permanent black from my enragingly thin hair and what's saved it is just a really good, cheap conditioner with coconut oil in it. Shouldn't be hard to find something similar available where you are since coconut oil is pretty popular in conditioners. Makes it smell awesome too.

Anyway just slap something like that on for 10 minutes and blowdry it for a bit so the moisture can get right into the cuticle, then after you wash it out blast the hair with cold water for a few seconds to 'lock it in' (I'm not really sure if that part really works, but it's certainly refreshing).

Do that once or twice a week and it should make a difference. Hopefully.

What Cicero said, plus get something to protect your hair when you use heat to style it, I use a thermal shine mist from CIBU that is super lightweight, and remember to blow with your hair's cuticle, not against.

Coconut oil, thanks Cicero.

Solumina, I blowdry it upside down, or I take parts of hair from the top of my head and hold it up and blowdry the base. Could I still do that and then blowdry it properly after I'm done, or would that just defeat the purpose?

why don't you go to a hair dresser and ask for advices.
they will be able to tell you what you need once they saw your hair.

Cassia!

I'd also use plain coconut oil, preferably a higher quality.
If I remember correctly, Kontan is quite fond of the Matrix conditioning balm. It's like..$26 though.

I'd get new hair. Lol.

This usually never happens to me. Then again my hair is usually shaved to a #2 or a #1.

well mine are hell to look after(long black curly hair).
maybe i shall shave it all and say goodbye to screaming my head off each time i comb them.
i usually resign myself to comb them.it's quite stylish messy and not combed with some spray .
but shaving ,that's an idea.
i shall give it some thoughts .

It's nice in the summer time and you can fit a hat over it better in the winter. Plus no matter be it man or woman, I think it looks hot.

when i was younger, my hair had been bleached and peroxided into this (now) ridiculous cobwebby death-hawk of no return. the moment i said 'ooo my hair is so fried' my mom made me an appointment with her big gay al hairdresser.

you already know what you have to do. lay off the heat, lay off the chemicals. he told me the same thing.

for a week try air drying. pin your hair up while it dries to create body. no amount of chemmy product will restore your locks. trim a little from the ends, then in a few weeks trim it again. use only sharp razors, don't let a hairdresser get away with dull blades of any kind - ever.

switch hair dyes perhaps, finding your hue in a cleaner product.

most of all, oil doesn't do quite enough. mix up an egg with a tablespoon of oil (olive, grapeseed or i like gardenia oil) and a big dallop of your fave conditioner. make enough to coat your hair really thick. leave it on under a shower cap for 10 mins then rinse in cool water. shampoo and air dry.

let us know how it goes!

Go get it trimmed! Just taking a centimetre or two of the dead ends off can make a big difference to the way it looks and feels.

Ah! the common fried hair problem. I've had to attempt to fix many friend heads in my time, big gay al hair dresser style.

The only way you'll get your hair back to normal is by shaving it all off and starting again, true facts. However, you can make it better.

1. Use coconut/almond oil conditioner, leave it in for ten minutes and blow dry the conditioner in. Basically, the heat opens up the hair cuticles so more conditioner can get into the hair, doesn't need to be really hot, just a little.

2. Learn the ways of using hair rollers, basically put your hair in rollers whilst it's wet and let it dry naturally, that way you can have nice curls and volume without having to use excessive heat. Too much heat whilst blowdrying can actually boil your hair and cause it to break off. So lay off the heat as much as possible when styling.

3. Your hair stretches A LOT! when it's wet so never brush it when wet, only use a wide toothed comb and gently detangle your hair from ends to roots and if you must blow dry wait until your hair is practically dry before you do it and invest in a good heat protection spray.

4. When you dye your hair, unless absolutely necessary only dye the roots.

5. Get a trim every 6 weeks to get rid of all the dead horrible bits.

All this stuff works, trust me.

my hair is heat styled daily and dyed frequently. I will always have some damage to my hair from the things I do to it but the key is to keep it as minimal as possible. If I take care of my hair, it is thick and soft with only some minor split ends. If I don't, well, it feel thinner and gross and brittle. I use some stuff from walgreens that works really well. I use bioinfusion hydrating shampoo, bio infusion olive oil oil deep conditioner (which strangely has much more coconut oil in it and only a small amount of olive and should so be called coconut oil conditioner, sorry that just bugs me a little bit) and mane n tale conditioner as a leave in. I wash every three days and never scrub my hair hard with the shampoo. Honestly, just treat your hair like it is fragile and baby it and don't be worry to obsess over it. Healthy hair is hard to get, especially when it is damaged already.

Your hair sounds like mine, Pineapple. Thin, orginally blonde, etc. And I dye mine regularly, too, and even though I don't blowdry it, I backcomb it nearly every day. Yeah. I understand. The thing that's been working for me is to use the deepest conditioner and gentlest shampoo I can find (Dove Intense Damage is on my shelf this time). When the brand I'm using stops doing the trick, I switch to something else - also, the deep conditioners that come with your dye/are sold at the beauty supply shops are the best ever. I like those over any regular conditioner. My hairdresser recommends a hot oil treatment, but I haven't done it yet.

Anyway, hope your hair comes out okay--

that was a poor choice of words, sorry.

Damnit, forgot about backcombing. I do that too.

Goddamn, no wonder. Hahaha.
I always love those conditioners but I always forget to use them 'cause I am lazy.

Thanks about the light shampoo and the heavy conditioner.

You know what's weird? Right after I've colored my hair and I forget to use the conditioner, it comes out dry and stiff, and it always looks better and styles better than when it's loose and softer. Dunno why.
