$100 for a new wardrobe

I have $100 in my pocket, and I am going to try and build an entire wardrobe around it.

I shop Tuesday.
What would you guys do?

Near me is are two bargain stores, a thrift store, and a dollar store.

Nix the dollar store, shop the thrift store first, and get things even if they're not 100% me, because I would alter them, and then check out the bargain stores.

Don't forget shoes, tights, and accessories.

Tights?
Why tights?

Also, why would you go past the dollar store? I'm just curious.

Oh, I just like tights. I collect tights/lingerie.

As for the dollar store, while I def. LOVE dollar stores for cool odds and ends, I've never found clothing there.

Maybe the dollar stores are different where you are?

They have gas masks and dog collars. I figure I might find something.

Are tights any comfortable? I barely remember what they are, much less if they're any comfy.

Oh, well I've never seen a gas mask or a dog collar in the ones around me.

And tights, I love them. Black tights make your legs beautifully slender and provide a great silhouette. I'm starting to think our fashion senses are different...so maybe I'm not the best consultant.

Hahahahaha.
I have a sense of fashion.
Good one.

Nah. I'm using this to experiment so your taste in fashion is as good as any. I'm bringing my camera with me while I'm doing this. =)

Go to a consignment shop or a swap meet. You can trade all your old clothes for new ones and money never changes hands. Well, it does sometimes, but anything more than $5 is considered a "major purchase" at these places. Also, army surplus stores often have things like gas masks, boots and smaller accessory-type items (like metal ammunition cases) for a few dollars.

If you like, get a fan. They are one of the best accessories, in my opinion, because you can cool yourself with them, be shy behind them, wave them around, whack people with them, and otherwise generally play with them. I have a medium-dark wooden one with shapes cut out of them. I'll post a pict sometime.

I'd also hit the fabric store at the end and see what ends/cheap material I could find. Fabric is great for DIY, and you can make entire things out of it. http://www.gothfashion.info/diy.php has some awesome DIY tips. I'm in the progress of making a panel skirt out of a velvet skirt and some silk that fades from red to black.

Well, outside of my personal reprehensions to gas masks - there's a couple good reasons to stay away from them. First off, they're extremely hard to pull off, and there's only two ways to really do it - excessive cyber & pvc, or with military outfits; both of which would run you over $100 for just one outfit.

Other good reasons to not wear gas masks, is because depending on which route you to go with, may alienate you from ther members of the industrial community, and you'll probably put off a lot of goths either way.

Now, unless you really, really see something amazing at the dollar store, I'd avoid it. You'll be able to probably pick up small accessories like beads, but I don't think I've seen anything worthwhile outside of that at at a dollar store that didn't require excessive sewing and glue-gunning.

Maybe some safety pins, if they have them.

Go to the thrift store and grab everything that looks cool and is black in your size. Grab some scissors. Think angular, or shredded.

After that, you can always spring for a couple cheap bodices and a waist cincher instead of a corset. You can get the same effect a lot cheaper that way. This is probably the one thing you should buy new, since you don't want to buy an item that's already started to conform to someone else's waistline, especially when we're talking low end items here.

The important thing after that is the details. You can get cheap plastic crucifixes a lot of places, and they look just as good under club lights. Go to a local craft store and pick up some leather cording, and tie a lark's head knot on a pendant to hold it on, and a fisherman's hitch knot in the back to make it easily adjustable. You can probably find some illustrations of these knots online somewhere.

Also, as someone else said, tights are an easy fix. Don't worry too much about footwear. Get some cheap army boots, ones that are all leather uppers. You can probably find those at the thrift store, too.

The other thing is, tomorrow is probably the worst day to go to the thrift store. Stores like Salvation Army and Saver's do specials at different times of the week; find out when this is. With the Salvation army, it's usually 1/2 off a certain color tag on Saturday (show up early), and all items with that color tag for a dollar on Monday.

If you do all that, you should be able to pick up at least 3-4 full outfits that look really good. They won't look over the top, but the thing is that the more distinctive an outfit, the more likely people are going to notice it's the only one you have. Another good reason to stay away from gas masks, since they're a very distinctive accessory.

Good luck!

Of course I'd prefer to see her get a nice under bust corset, but I don't think they'll let her into a club with just that. ;-)

I'm not sure she's the type to wear a corset. At least not the kind we're probably thinking of.

I think she's more industrial/cyber. But correct me if I'm wrong.

I would advise you to keep all your recipts, incase you see something you love and you've just run out of cash ,cause you can return something.

I'm not sure how to take that. It almost seems you're being sarcastic, but I don't know why you would.

Um. The whole point of a corset is that being pudgy won't matter...
Unless you're talking about plastic boned ones, which yes, will look terrible on most people who are overweight.

If you're talking about me...
I'm a guy.

Anyway, delicti, you mentioned now was not the time to buy. Would I be better off waiting until Saturday/Sunday, or is it going to make enough of a difference (Then again, thinking about that, $100 can make $0.50 look like a lot) to wait, or should I go tomorrow anyway?

You all have made me realize that I am not the person to ask about this.

I'm extremely picky about my clothes. I will do anything to get exactly what I need. Yesterday, my friends and I, in need of new winter clothing, braved the back-to-school crazed parents, and headed for the mall.

EVERY DAMN CLOTHING STORE. We went through it. We took clothes off shelves, went through every rack, until finally (*cough* Seven hours *cough*) we had gathered a pile of suitable clothing.

Of course, each of us spent upward of $100.

But if you are a cyber-goth, you most likely will not find what you want in a mall. I look like a doll. Its easy enough for me to locate enough pieces to make several outfits, but I imagine for you its harder.

Where do you get cyber clothes though?

Wow. (looks at the floor) I'm horrible. The most expensive piece of clothing I ever bought was a $150 dress.

It's a very pretty dress though.....

I have managed to land at least 3 outfits in the span of 20 dollars.

Here's a GOOD idea. Go to Goodwills in the RICH parts of town. I have found... 3 pair of PVC pants and about 3 pair of interesting fabriced pants in the span of a week and a half.
