I've never known of a time in my life when goth wasn't a popular word to use. *shrugs*

All subcultures are trendy due to their natures. There's no escaping labels, and why bother? Slapping names and tacking meanings onto things is healthy and human. Beating a dead horse is as well.

Any way, I like this.

"Slapping names and tacking meanings onto things is healthy and human." While I concede that this is common human behaviour, I do not agree that it is healthy. It is detrimental and limiting, to say the least. I also realize, however, that language is inherently flawed in this way. Is "human" not a label in and of itself? Complex subject - maybe it has its own thread somewhere . . .

Fun piece, though. Was it intended as light-hearted, tongue-in-cheek fun, or social commentary?

Meant as both. Essentially, I'm getting tired of the word and though there is truth, it's as subjective as anything else and facts apparently mean nothing of the sort anymore when it pertains to the word "goth".

I guess goth means "eyeliner" and "powerful" anymore. It's sick... and it's funny.

Disturbingly entertaining. A sad day when goth is a marketing strategy.

First Manson and now it’s My Chemical shite…Goth is way too overused, no wonder people are so confused.

But isn't My Chemical Romance an emo band?

Pop/rock, emo’s been dead for over 10 years, it’s not a genre of music anymore. But I’ve seen plenty of kids who call themselves Goth because they think Gerard Way is (not that he is in ANY way).

Really? Because I've heard some of the newer bands like Panic! At the Disco and Fallout Boy being ragged on as "emo-pop" or "emo-punk." How would you classify them, then, since there is no such thing as emo anymore?

Pop/rock, it’s sad because Emo started in the mid-80’s as a sub genre of punk and now it’s being used to label a group of pop bands that have nothing to do with the original stuff.

This should probably end up moving to the music thread, but you don't believe a genre can evolve? I mean, if emo or rock had a particular sound ten years ago, it should be the same today? Although the same could be asked of Goth culture. Hasn't it evolved? Should it mean the same things it did twenty-thirty years ago?

But it has nothing to do with the original genre. There were distinctive features of emo music that actually made them emo, these new bands don’t. Of course a genre can evolve but emo just shrivelled up and died.

I knew a Goth named Fritigern, and he was all of those things and tons more. As far as the word itself is concerned, doesn't 'goth' sort of get squashed around in your head until it sounds the way the word 'brain' sounds when you think about it too much?

"There once was a Goth named Fritigern . . ."

Sounds like the beginnings of a bizarre limerick.
