Monroe street....

driving up monroe street, burnt out monroe street,
old men hanging out on steps, younger by far in age
than their bodies allow them to appear
unemployed, beat down
the church of false hope on the corner
charred and peeling out
unused, now.

The wide boulevard, the tallness of the 3 story row houses
begs a question about the past.
the shiny days when every row house was
brand new.

Who lived there? Howd it come to this?

An angry, once beautiful woman, clearly on a mission of bitterness,
yelling at a man walking behind her,
missing teeth,
juts out into the street, hardly caring about traffic,
hit me with your stupid cars, she seems to be saying,
or leave me alone to find my only medicine,
raw unforgiving,
this landscape takes the human in a body and crushes it to dust.

Someone I know writes allot of poems about baltimore city this is one of them.... it means something to me so I though I would share it.

I like the imagery in those two lines, particularly the former. When I first got started writing, "broken dreams" used to be the theme on which I concentrated the most.

I really like this. The rhythm is broken and uneven, but it seems deliberately so. I'm probably biased, since this always has been one of my favourite stylistic devices.
