Music Finally, an entire forum devoted to talking about Doktor Avalanche, the drum machine for the Sisters of Mercy. You can talk about other bands, or other members of that band, too, if you want to be UNCOOL. |

Of course you can. I do-- I also listen to blues, jazz, and classic rock. You can listen to polka if you want.

I find it utterly rediculous to think that just because one is gothic, he or she should listen only to gothic music. Gordon lightfoot, a ballad artist is one of my favorites, and i listen to a LOT of classical seeing as i'm a music major in college. I have a very small amount of metal, but do enjoy it here and there. listen to what you want to.

Hey, I listen to a lot of rock that isn't goth. Why would anyone want to limit their taste? You obviously like enough stuff about the gothic lifestyle to be here, and if you weren't "goth enough", you'd have become bored enough to leave, right?

Oh dear. Well, I wish them well in their new life off of G.net. Did you guys scare them away? - I notice you don't seem overly keen on that many newbies! Oh, wait, that includes me. *ducks under the table before they smell fear*

There is some debate whether metal can actually be gothic, but who cares? I listen to Insane Clown Posse and fuckin Hootie and the Blowfish! It doesn't really matter what you listen to. Hell, you can even listen to Manson, and as long as you lead an alternative lifestyle (gay, atheist, etc.) you are still goth! Of course, I also highly recommend listening to some goth rock, cause that's exactly how this whole subculture started.

I agree, atheism is the most important thing. To me. To others it might be gayness or any number of things, but it's certainly a bit more than just listening to the "right" music.

Absolutely. Hence my words, to me. I'm there are plenty of goths who are religious - it's a personal choice, like everything else in life! (Wait a second - do I have to extend tolerance to the pink nail-varnished thread starter? Nooooooooooo!)

I was not kidding about homosexuality being a part of gothic subculture. I know plenty of gay goths, and besides, being alternative is a big part of being goth. Being alternative also includes homosexuality. ie: having alternative sexuality.
I also have to add that while the gothic subculture has developed its own art, literature, and lifestyle today, the whole thing seeded from the music alone. It is a proven fact of history. The goth music scene emerged from the 70's punk scene as a type of music.

Maybe you're right, but I still say being alternative has a huge part in gothic subculture. Because homsexuality is an ALTERNATIVE lifestlye, I consider this yet another way to be goth. I was just trying to get the point across that there are many ways you can be goth without having the fashion.

Music does not make you a goth, just how you feel and are - thats it-

Goths can listen to anything they like. I do a lot of theatre so I have to open minded to the choices of music I listen to. Last night I was even dancing around to the Chicago soundtrack.
I'll be square with you though. GOTHS AND CHAVS DO NOT MIX WELL - THEREFORE DON'T LISTEN TO NEW MONKEY IN THE PRESENCE OF ANY OTHER GOTHS. But it doesn't have to be Heavy Metal, although that would be my first choice of music.

Never! Doom metal all the way!
Anyway, thanks for posting those words of wisdom, katsumy (I only noticed this thread today). I'll keep them in mind whenever I see heated debates about goth bands I've never even heard of!
