I can't even THINK about that movie without laughing... that kid was so funny--and what was up with him and sandwiches?!?

...but yeah, I liked the ending... that guy was really nice in the end... although he was an uncouth, perverted crook...

I agree, I am not Pagan or Christian (although I have been raised mostly Christian sort of) I still love the giving and getting of presents and it's just a lot of fun. I like hearing the music, I like the decor, I like Christmas. It doesn't mean anything to me like it was the birth of Christ or anything like that.

I don't like Christmas for the same reason I don't like Thanksgiving. A bunch of people I don't normally talk to over at my house and no matter how many souls are there, there isn't one for me.

That's why I normally just spend the holidays with the people I love and care about. I don't go to things that have a bunch of people I don't know. My dad has always been that way with the holidays so I guess that's why I am the way I am with that as well. My dad never forced me to do things like that. I love my intermediate family and that's why I only spend time with them for the holidays.

Taking that animal shelter thought further. (I admit, i did not read this thread all the way through.) My concern would be that the money donated would probably not help strays etc. How about picking up a stray or an abandoned pet and giving it a loving home? =)

Uhh, If I took an animal in, I would and have treated it like a brother/sister. We (my family) have considered any pets that we have had to be our family and are treated as such. Admittedly we are cat people and I think they are easier to take care off compared to dogs, but even so, there is usually always one of us around it to take care of it.

I was speaking for myself. I cant speak for everyone. You are right though that there is no point taking in a pet and neglecting it.

Edit: I love Pets. They dont lie about their emotions. They either like you or dont. They are honest, unlike human beings.

I'd be either too preoccupied with my art or too lethargic to take care of a pet. I know it sounds mean and self-absorbed, but that's how I am.

My feelings about Christmas are mixed, and overall cancel each other out, I think. I hate the commercialism, and try as best I can to avoid places that play Mall Christmas Music. I went to the grocery store the other day, and they were playing Mall Christmas Music, and as soon as I got home I blasted some 500-year-old carols/motets over my headphones (Angelus ad Virginem... so good!).

Christmas doesn't have any religious meaning to me at all. I used to say, when I was about 5, that I believed in God only on Christmas Day, which doesn't make sense, looking back... Anyway, I think Christmas is so secular in my mind that I don't pay attention to anything religious, other than what's in art or literature, because a lot of my favourite art has to do with Jesus and Mary and Easter and Christmas and Nativity and everything like that.

My friends and I once came up with something along the lines of "Christmukwalihanzukeid," which covers Christmas, Kwanzaa, Eid, Hanukka, and Diwali. Add "us" to the end of that, and it covers Festivus too. It was partly in mockery of Hallmark, partly to appease my anally politically correct friend.

What I do like about Christmas is the fact that I get to relax and smell cloves and cinammon and eat clementines and shortbread, and sit in the semi-dark, the only lighting being my christmas lights.

I love being able to smell the Christmas tree, and let its fragrance wash over me. I also love decorating the Christmas tree, especially using only white lights. It gives it a more ethereal feel, as if it's from an other world.

I like the old Christmas music, generally the stuff that's more than 150 years old, or the stuff by Loreena McKennitt (I highly recommend you check her out, by the way. Her music is celtic, and the only way I've been able to describe it with any accuracy is to call it Pre-Raphaelite).

I also like seeing the face of people when I give them something they like, especially if they completely didn't expect it. I like getting together with family, just because they are family and it's nice to see them every once in a while, boring as most of them are. I like the Christmas Crackers that come with Christmas Dinner, especially the dorky crown hats and the bad jokes. The food itself I could do without. The only thing I really like about Christmas Dinner is the rolls/buns, which are warm and fresh and buttery. Chicken or duck is so much juicier and more flavourful than turkey, gravy icks me out, and I hate anything to do with potatoes (except some curried potatoes, but those definitely don't get served at the family Christmas Dinner). Squash doesn't appeal to me, and pickles make me sick. I guess I can deal with the dark meat of the turkey, but it's still not as good as the other fowl I've tried.

Sorry, that was long. I think I was trying to figure out what Christmas really means to me.

My step father is in the military, Air Force to be exact. They actually have posters in their hospitals for suicide prevention because of the substantial amount of stress that the holidays create. It states that there are more suicides during the winter holidays than any other time of the year.

As for myself, I love every aspect of Christmas. Anything from "A Charlie Brown Christmas" to continuously drinking my mother's wretched eggnog because she insists it's a "Christmas Tradition."

*shudders* Eggnog... That's one Christmas tradition that I don't participate in...

I love Christmas. There's just some feeling about it, like everyone is looking out for others. It's not fake, it's just epidemic-ish. It spreads, like in that bad movie Pay It Forward. If you don't feel like Christmas is fun for you, try volunteering some time doing things for others. It helps you get it the mood.

I'm not going to bother reading 11 pages of stuff, so I'll throw out my reason for hating Christmas.

I don't mind the holiday, whatever. I never celebrated it, but giving presents to kids is in good nature.

But I absolutely can't stand the "metal Christmas carols" that get huge radio airplay on light rock stations. They basically take the Carol Of The Bells or Silent Night and play them with slightly distorted guitars and drums and a bass part. Its so sucky and I hate them strongly.

I love Carol of the Bells!!!!! I love the version Trans-Siberian Orchestra does. I love carols. I love Christmas!!!! I can't wait, we just decorated our (unfortunately fake) tree last night. My boyfriend was over and so the family, and him decorated it. Then my silly kitties torn down some of the ornaments. He he. I love it.

A lot of you dislike the "commercialism" of the holidays. I'll take it one step further.

I do not like the obligation to buy gifts for people just because society says I should. Sure, I don't 'have' to buy any gifts, but then what happens when others buy for me?

It is like organized gift giving extortion.

I think you should buy gifts for others anytime that you feel like it ... it should not be because you are obligated to participate with a due date of December 25th.

I'm not anti-Christmas, or anti-Holiday, or anti-family gathering. I'm not even anti-gift. I am anti-forced-gift-giving. I think it is good to gather with friends or families on some scheduled days. I just could do without the whole gifting requirement.

You know what else? (I'm getting to my rambling stage now) A gift card is not a gift. A gift card is cash with a restriction on where the money can be spent, and it is something given when all else fails. It's really a thoughtless gift... "I didn't know what you wanted, but I am obligated to give you something per the holiday ritual, so here's $25 for Starbucks because giving cash straight out would have made it obvious that I suck at buying gifts."

How do I know this? Because I have succumbed to buying gift cards in desperation myself and I felt dirty and bad for doing that.

And, well, while I am on a roll.... it aggravates me that I feel pathetic when I can't find a solid gift for someone. I care about finding or making gifts that will be valued by the recipient. Something special for them and something they want for themselves. So when I feel like I have to settle for less because of lack of inventory or lack of available shopping time to hunt things down, it makes me not want to go to the gift exchange gathering. It's like I need to produce the right gift or else I don't feel worthy of attending the family get together.

Maybe it is just me. I'm not a naturally warm and fuzzy person. But I like people, I like family dinners, and I like the true spirit of holidays. It's a shame it has to get muddied with this gift-giving baggage.

Don't even get me started on the gift-giving aspect. It is so wrong. I mean, people will ask me what I want for Christmas, and I'll tell them not to get me anything because I don't want anything, and they get all attitude-ish about it, as if I did something wrong! WTF? I'm wrong because I don't want a Christmas present? I'm wrong because I'm completely satisfied spending a day with all the people I care about, and don't require anything further? Well, if that makes me wrong, then I like being wrong.
