I've been bouncing around millitary spouse support sites and I've been talking to a lot of people so our current plan is to go off base in Monterey but there is some pretty nice base housing by Kunia (though not on Kunia itself, I forget the name of the base it isn't Pearl Harbor but the other one right there) and it looks like rent in that area is crazy high, unless we want to live on the other side of the island and have a super crappy commute. Is there something other than just the size and condition of the houses that you think would be a major drawback to living on base?

Well, for one, your BAH depends on your area's cost of living as well as number of dependents and rank. It's less where I am then, say, California. To go with that, you don't collect BAH in base housing. It's either one or the other. From a financial stand point, I'd rather collect BAH that's greatly more then my rent. For example, I get 1300 a month. While I have to give my wife 700 of that because we don't live together, my rent is only 500 a month. In my situation, you would keep the 700 in your pocket.

Aside from that, there a lot of negatives about living on base. There are a lot of stupid rules, like you can't have a charcoal grill, can't have a conoe (what?), or a million other stupid things. As with everything in the military, whatever you get provided will be expected to be returned in better condition then you got it, as well.

My biggest problem, though, is I hate the military's overall culture. Your neighbors will be in your business, they'll try to gossip behind each others back, they'll try to use their spouses rank to establish a hierarchy. It's fucking stupid.

And personally, I just hate being surrounded by it all the time. I want to put on people clothes when I go home and do my grocery shopping anonymously at safe way or king supper, not the commissary or class six or PX/BX.

Also, in the army, we say "post" instead of base. It was really hard for me to write this. XD

Yeah I guess I get what you mean, especially about the social structure on basses, I'm not exactly looking forward to that and it is the main reason we want to be off base in Cali but in Hawaii the BAH would not cover rent and utilities for something comparable to what we could get on base, unless we go far away but then you have to factor in things like gas, especially since if we are on base Jake could just bike to work, meaning we would only need one car.

Merp it is two whole years away so I guess I shouldn't be trying to plan specifics yet (but don't worry Saya, whether we live on base or not we will have a guest room that you can stay in if you visit)

I think the navy uses "post" too but I haven't gotten much of the lingo down.

Ugh, I learned today that I don't get hungover, I just hate myself.

Was at a 21st last night, and was drinking Wild Turkey from the bottle which is bad because I'm a lightweight and in the end I was that guy who went from life of the party funny drunk to the douche who managed to piss off the birthday boy. I really hate myself for that because he's a dear friend, and the parents had to escort me down the stairs and help me into someone's car to get me home because I refused the other rides from my other friends because they were telling me I should go in a patronizing way which riles me up bad time. I also have foolish stupid pride issues which means I'll never actually apologize for it even though I want to.

Add one to the things I really regret tally. I think i should swear off alcohol.

^ this is why I don't drink, except I get all loving and no one wants fruitbat draped over them, saying "I love you, you are the bestest person in the entire universe" - it's just scary on so many levels......

I'm with you on the not drinking thing. I'll drink occasionally, but getting/being drunk is more trouble than it's worth.

I'm having a party on Friday, I have begun the madness that always consumes me when I'm having more than a couple of people over. So far I have cleaned my kitchen, scrubbed every surface in the bathroom, rearranged my living room so that it will be better for playing games, baked brownies, scones are in the oven, and washed every set of sheets that I own so that whoever sleeps on the futon can pick which ones they like best. And I still have shit tons more than I want to do today.

Mind you there are going to be like 10 people at this party, all of which are dear friends who are the types of people who can have fun doing nothing at all, so there is no reason for me to be going this crazy but there are no breaks on this crazy train.

Eghads! That was our summer. We hardly had any hot weather - maybe a few days of over 30 but no 40s. Stupid southern oscilation index.

Just saved a little bird in the garden. Looks like it had a tangle with a cat or something. Cleaned the birds wing up and got it into one of our birdhouses with some food and water ( we have a birdhouse where the whole front opens so it can be cleaned so I put it in that one). Don't think it's hurt too badly as there were only a few small cuts on it so hopefully it'll be alright after a few days food and rest. It was adorable the way it was hopping round my feet before it let me pick it up. Will check on it later.

^^ That was really sweet of you. I hope the little guy ends up okay.

I just cleaned up my basement. It's so spotless I think I'm not going to go down there anymore so it can stay that way, because no matter how hard I try it will eventually be the mess it was before. Now that the cleaning is done I'm singing along to The Misfits in my empty house. Once I get my Women's Studies readings out of the way I'm going to spend the rest of today playing video games of some kind, and pigging out on snack food.

Working 5 days a week has made me a lot more thankful for free time.

Yes, the intro class. I figured I'd do some elective over the summer, and Women's studies seemed like the most interesting. It officially starts Monday.

The prof seems to be very well organized, I think her last name is Bride. It's a distance course, and she's had everything we'll need for the full course up and ready since last week.

Squee. I took my guinea pigs out of their cage to play, and they're hopping and having a wonderful time. Life is good today.

I did it distance but I think they change the prof every time they can, so its always different. The way I did it was there was no exam, there was a journal entry on an article that we were supposed to read every week, participation marks and a research paper. The book is really dry in some areas, but then it wakes you up with something balls to the wall infuriating (like about women of colour being sterilized against their will or white women trying to join the KKK.)

The taboo can be just as alluring as the things you can't have.

Thumbs up

I got 5 hours of sleep, and have been awake for 17 hours, I'm hoping I dream of Ronnie Coleman singing Feel So Close To You by Calvin Harris to a jar of peanuts. Its a forcefield.

Oh it isn't that, the reason why I shouldn't just makes me feel like a shitty person for even wanting it, and what is worse is that I want it badly enough that I almost don't care.
