Sinister

Director Scott Derrickson (The Day the Earth Stood Still, The Exorcism of Emily Rose) will bring Sinister to theaters on October 5. Ethan Hawke plays a crime writer who moves his family to new a house in hopes of writing a successful novel. He finds some old films in the attic that show families that had lived in the house in years past hanging out, swimming in the pool, having barbecues…and being horribly murdered. He eventually connects events to an ancient entity known as Bagul that eats children.

Sinister seems to draw on lots of horror elements — I can see aspects of The Ninth Gate, The Ring, and of course the well-worn “writer moves to a haunted house” trope. With lots of positive reviews from the film festival circuit, this looks like it could be a horror remix done right. No need to reinvent the wheel as long as you’re scaring the crap out of the audience.

Sinister
Found footage helps a true-crime novelist realize how and why a family was murdered in his new home, though his discoveries put his entire family in the path of a supernatural entity.
