We converted all of ours to the compact florescent bulbs, as well.

Opteron_Man 04-02-2008 10:42 PM

I volunteered to go door to door in my area to hand out fluorescent bulbs. As a bonus you were aloud to have a bunch for your self. I took something like 5. Unfortunately, that wasn’t enough to do my whole house, so I sill have maybe 2 or 3 normal bulbs.

LaBelleDameSansMerci 04-02-2008 11:06 PM

My parents converted everything to cold white CFs. I think my rez room is all flourescents.
I even have a CF blacklight. ^.^

I forgot to participate in Earth Hour, but that's partly cuz I was at the studio.

Because turning all the lights on for 1 hour is going to make the electric bill REALLY big.

Underwater Ophelia 04-03-2008 06:05 AM

Shut up, you!

Mir 04-03-2008 08:22 AM

One hour in an entire year? Pah.

Everyday should be Earth day. That might actually make a difference. But only if we don't use electricity like pigs for the other 23 hours in that particular day.

Underwater Ophelia 04-03-2008 08:26 AM

Use electricity like pigs?
You mean not at all, or with little comprehension?

HEE HEE!

Nothing´s gonna save us...
Anyway, I´m keeping my indifference to these kinds of subjects....

I'm all for raising awareness about energy consumption but I really wish that there was some long range goal for earth hour, such as having one hour every month or something so that people can really get how easy it is to do things without electricity.

Personally I'm a big advocate for CFLs as they don't have any negative impact on your daily activity but they do use about 75% less energy then standard incandescent bulbs, as well as reusable shopping bags (the fact that 100 billion plastic bags are used every year in the US makes me ill)

Raptor 04-03-2008 10:32 AM

Earth Hour is just an event intended to raise awareness for their campaign to encourage people to reduce emissions, as it says on their website.

I still think it would be more effective to replace most energy production with nuclear power stations.

Edit: Got beaten to saying that first part.

A 5% annual emission cut, by promoting ways of reducing how much energy you use.

But it really didn't do much promoting of ways to reduce energy use. There was no widespread information about CFLs, reusable bags, low flow water fixtures, or the amount of energy saved by unplugging unused electronics. Maybe there was something on the website but not in the facebook groups, myspace groups, or on the news when earth hour was mentioned, it simply raised awareness that there was a problem that involved all of us

Raptor 04-03-2008 11:06 AM

Yeh I got that stuff from their official website. It does outline some methods on it, and recommends you sign up "for more tips", but I agree that it didn't promote the actual campaign as much as I would have expected. Hmm I haven't seen the facebook or myspace groups, I would have thought they'd put some information on there.

Solumina 04-03-2008 11:19 AM

I don't think that there were any official earth hour groups, just ones that people created on their own but oh well, it was better than nothing
