You DO know that's bullshit, right? No one would dump somebody because they like them. If he HAD come to like you, you'd have gained tenure as his mistress, not the experience of being dropped from a great height.

What he wanted to say, but couldn't (in case you made trouble and the whole thing got back to his gf) is "I have to distance myself because I've become bored of you. Chicks who fall for "cute hugs and kisses" so easily are no fun - it's like shooting fish in a barrel."
