Preventing the spread of the H1N1 flu virus from WebMD

The CDC recommends taking these steps:

* Wash your hands regularly with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. Scrub for at least 20 seconds and rinse thoroughly.
* If soap and water are not available, wash your hands with an alcohol-based hand gel. Rub your hands together until the alcohol dries completely.
* Avoid close contact -- that is, being within 6 feet -- with people who have flu-like symptoms.
* Avoid touching your mouth, nose, or eyes. That's not easy to do, so keep those hands clean.
* If you have flu-like symptoms -- fever plus at least cough or sore throat or other flu symptoms -- stay home for seven days after symptoms begin or until you've been symptom-free for 24 hours -- whichever is longer.
* Wear a face mask (consider using an N95 respirator) if you must come into close contact with a sick person. "Close contact" means within 6 feet. Note: There is no definitive proof that a face mask prevents flu transmission. Do not rely solely on a face mask to prevent infection.
* Wear an N95 respirator if helping a sick person with a nebulizer, inhaler, or other respiratory treatment. Note: There is no definitive proof that a respirator prevents flu transmission. Do not rely solely on a respirator to prevent infection.
* People who have or are suspected of having swine flu should wear a face mask, if available and tolerable, when sharing common spaces with other household members, when outside the home, or when near children or infants.
* Breastfeeding mothers with swine flu symptoms should express their breast milk, and the child should be fed by someone else.


If you have flu symptoms, stay home, and when you cough or sneeze, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue. Afterward, throw the tissue in the trash and wash your hands. That will help prevent your flu from spreading. If you can do it comfortably, wear a surgical mask if you must be around others.

The thing about BFing moms being told not to BF seems whack to me. The mom passes immunities through her milk so the child would have less chance of getting sick if he or she nursed through the mom's illness period.

oh, wait, it doesn't say no BM. I don't like the way that statement is worded by the CDC though because it seems to suggest switching off BM.

I think the point was that the mom should express so as to avoid contact while sick. It doesn't state that the baby shouldn't continue to feed on her milk.

I think the statement is pretty clear. I've forwarded this info to a lot of people (including a couple of breast-feeding moms) and you're the only one who had a problem with the wording.

Just chalk it up to one of those things where you read it wrong.

No I could tell it was saying to use a breast pump, don't forget infants are at high risk for flus so it would be terrible for the mother to cough on the kid while she's breastfeeding.

Still must suck if you have a baby and are afraid to go near it.

It does all seem a little bit paranoid, particularly given that H1N1 is so far considerably less fatal than any other type of flu. More infectious, but way less fatal.

Yes, it does tend to be serious for those in weakened condition. So is the common flu, and any of the nastier variants of the common cold for that matter.

Excuse me? Since the CDC has reported that seasonal flu and H1N1 have been responsible for between 30,000 and 40,000 hospitalizations and between 1000 and 3000 deaths (pending clinical confirmation of cause) between April and Oct 17th in the United States, is that distinction really valuable?

Nationwide, visits to doctors for influenza-like-illness are increasing steeply and are now higher than what is seen at the peak of many regular flu seasons. In addition, flu-related hospitalizations and deaths continue to go up nation-wide and are above what is expected for this time of year.

The issue with N1H1 isn't that it is deadly, it is much less deadly than the regular flu, but that it is highly contagious, you don't even have to come into contact with someone who has it and if you do get it than you can become contagious within three hours, in many cases this isn't enough time for someone to get home and prevent themselves from exposing more people.

Now I'm worried I gave that little girl who came by looking for a donation for a school thing the flu.

And now she won't be able to go on her field trip!

And even though it isn't considered as "deadly" as the standard flu, being much more contageous means many more people who are at risk of serious complications or death will get it. So while it isn't as deadly, it could and probably will cause more deaths, making such distinctions pretty meaningless in my book.

I'm planning a trip up to Wisconsin for mid-November ... and while I would normally rather escape the heat of Texas for the moderate climes of Milwaukee in July or August, this trip is centered around attending a Green Bay Packer football game. And I wouldn't miss that for the world. In fact, during the trip I'm going to do something decidedly un-gothic ... I'm going to build-a-bear workshop to build a Packer bear.

I am trying to cram a lot of stuff into 2 full days and 2 partial days ... get a Wisconsin fix that will keep me sated for a year or two.

I really need to get a job that lets me travel.

I'm so envious, Ben! I used to live in Port Washington and spent a lot of time in Milwaukee. Say hi to the cheeseheads for me, and have an absolutely wonderful trip.
