I was raised by my Mother and Grandmother, so it probably makes more sense to see a potential 'god' as female rather than male.

Well no. Most atheists you'll meet are in fact agnostic atheists. Agnosticism and gnosticism talks about knowledge, not belief. Theism and atheism deal with a belief or lack of belief in gods or a god. An agnostic atheist would admit there is no knowledge of a god so therefore, due to the lack of knowing a god is real, they lack a belief in a god until proven otherwise.

I would prefer to have a pure non-belief, but I'm finding that rather difficult, sometimes.

Would that be the point of rationality as far as gods go? Non-belief isn't exactly the high ground, it's a default state. One can be compelled to withhold belief until compelling evidence proves otherwise. It just happens to be that most evidence so far hasn't supported a god that anyone has ever defined and to further that, even the deist god is possible, but not exactly worth worshiping or seeking out. The deist god could very well be a cosmic fart that put life and conscience into movement but nothing more. That's not exactly a god worth building temples around or even speculating on a truth about it that we have no access to.

Maybe this nazi chick that Saya's friend knew was in a transitional phase and not truly an atheist, but she lacked the realization that she was between beliefs? w/e

I'm compelled to think she was crazy or maybe Saya was just taking her at her word. There's a lot of idiots out there who think being an atheist means hating gods.
