The term "goth" is something I use to describe myself when I have to sum up all my various interests and tastes and opinions into a single sentence (i.e. when someone asks why I wear black all the time). Well, that, and if someone says, "so... are you like, a goth or something?"

I hate it when someone asks "what does it mean to be goth?", because it's an impossible question. I can't answer for the entire subculture; only for myself, which isn't really an answer, because it leaves out everyone else. I suppose that's what it means to be an individual. Usually I just respond by shrugging and saying that I don't really know, because the only experience I've had with it is my own, and that it's a culture and therefore diverse. It's like asking, "what's it like to be American?" (or English or Indian or Chinese, etc.).

I tell my parents I'm a nouveau-beatnik. (It seems to satisfy them well enough).

Psst... I'm going pre-law english in September so I understand. Although, I don't plan on living through law school, I figure it is a good way to spend the rest of my time. I have always loved to learn.

On the "goth" subject. I do not consider myself a "goth". I have some of the same opinions on shit as most "goths", but I do not label myself. I believe that I am simply someone who was born in the wrong decade.

This is one topic that I will never discuss again. I have made my peace with The Creator. I could die today and I'd be ready. All I am saying that when the time comes I want to be doing something that I enjoy. I also do not want to give-up like so many others that I know. I will better myself until I do leave this world, whether that is 20 years from now or tomorrow.

Those questions about 'what is goth', 'am i goth'... what's really neat is, take any of those kinds of questions, and replace the word 'goth' with 'Buddha-nature' (you might have to change a few other minor words for consistency) and you've got another great debate where the upshot result from wise folk is, don't ask stupid questions that have nothing to do with what's really important.

Lists that allow people to checklist-classify themselves are very rarely authentically comforting. If, in reading a list that defines X, you feel comforted knowing that either you are X or are not X (depending on personal taste), you're probably not paying enough attention to significant things.
