I don't like that experiment. What is the desired outcome of that?
If the black kids prefer the white doll, then it seems they have learned from society that being white is being better. If the black kids prefer the black doll, that means they have been indoctrinated to think that their color is better because it's theirs; wouldn't you agree? The problem with this experiment is that, as the girl herself stated, one of the dolls is better. And one of the dolls will always be better because of a choice of two, they can only choose one. It doesn't matter which doll they choose, both choices are discriminatory. |
I can see what you are saying jilly but the kids were black and allmost all of them choose the white doll...the experiment is flawed but it does show a big problem with the way kids are tuaght to think of them selves
|
People's feelings are affected by color. That has nothing to do with indoctrination.
Maybe the reason kids prefer the white doll is because of he color itself, and that grows into racism when they become adults and don't outgrow superficial associations like these, rather than the other way around. |
It would be interesting to see what would happen if they ran that doll-test in say.. Asia, or central europe etc. I bet the outcome would be somewhat different.
|
I wonder what they would get in asia... I think I know what they would get in japan.

I saw this posted in the YouTube thread, but thought it fell in line with the current topic here quite well.
http://ie.youtube.com/watch?v=hibyAJOSW8U You can't blame all of this on the people. Much of it comes from the corporations who portray good/bad pretty/ugly as they do in media. I would agree that the location of the test would have some differences, but that being said, the media itself forms a false sense of what is good/pretty based on what sells to adults. They never realise that they are inadvertently effecting the minds of children at the same time. |
Yes, they do. And they are counting on it. How better to predict than to mold?
|
"how better to predict then to mold"
This shit makes me sick. And I dont know what I can fucking do about it. I can avoid buying certain products and that kind of thing but I want to do something bigger...FUCK!!!! That dove video really shows how they fake us out. I heard of retouching but never knew they did it like that. Its not just even race anymore its peoples whole mindsets its world views its brainwashing.. I grew up in a very mixed community in africa - my dad is a retired university professor, and back in his days, most people who got educated above high school had to go to the UK or US to do so. Many of them got married while studying, and there was a healthy mix of Whites, mixed-race, asian children when I was growing up, no issues at all. Then I moved to the UK. Now I'm fully black (not quite correct - I have a number of portuguese ancestors on my father's side, but not close enough to have any impact on my appearance), but culturally I tended to associate more with white folks., (actually I associated more with geeky people who tended not to bully as much), so I always had all them funny nicknames while growing up - bounty, coconut, etc. I was even called a "disgrace to the race" by one wanna be rapper once.
As long as I didn't get beat up, it didn't bother me none. |

AHHHHHHHH
I have stated at least 8 times that when I first posted this thread I used the term "reverse racism" incorrectly. I simply ment ppl being racist agaist you for being part white...etc. But this thread has gone away from that a bit and just become for talk about general racism. And I believe that in the dictionary the word racism is defined as social/econicmic/politial domination on the basis of race. So in Amerikka I dont think Blacks/Hispanics can be racist as the dictionary describes it cuz we are not in power AT ALL. We dont dominate shit except maybe socially in the ghetto. Blacks/Latinos can discriminate though.... If I dont sound completely trashed than maybe u understand that paragraph |
What's the difference between discrimination and racism? They're both mental states where one seems lesser than the other and they affect people negatively...
And no, they can be racist quite easily.... It's just more socially acceptable for them to get away with it. |
Discrimination is a physical and mental action based on some parameters. Racism is a mentality/philosophy first as applied to only one set of parameters that can lead ro race discrimination.

No, Blacks and Hispanics can be racist, but may lack the means and perceived power to discriminate. In which case, racism is still a personal preference and discrimination is a power play
|
I see what you mean now, MollyMac; I always thought one just lead to the other.
|
Ok I dont think anyone really got what I was attempting to say..
And yes I know all Blacks/Hispanics are not stuck being poor.. but ALLOT of us are. And what I was saying is in america ight now economicaly and politicaly speaking Blacks/Hispanics dont really have much power at all... The country is run by old fat white men. If you go by the definition of racism that I gave that would mean that at this point in time Black people can not be "Racist" as difined in the dictionary.. Because we dont have power/control/a but load of money. "In which case, racism is still a personal preference and discrimination is a power play" I was thinking of it the other way around. An example of Discrimination is hateing someone just for their ethnicity/race/skin color. And racism would be domonation politicaly economicaly etc on the bases of race.. __________________ |
Discrimination is an act. You discriminate against some noun that you do not like.
Racism is a philosophy or preference based upon your preference. If you hate black people simple because they are black, then you are a racist whether or not you discriminate against them. You can be someone who hates black people and do nothing external (ie discriminatory) to show it. Just a racist. The second you do not hire a black person SOLELY for being black, then you discriminate upon racial grounds and are subject to suit and fines. |
Discrimination is a normal and healthy thing to do.
And blacks and hispanics do have political power; that's why campaigns work hard on trying to get the minority vote. The fact that there's more minorities in the lower income social classes is not so much about racism than the self-perpetuating economic hierarchy. |
As Jilly said blacks and hispanics do have a large amount of political power. To name a few in the American political system: Colin Powell, Condeleeza Rice, Alberto Gonzalez, and Barak Obama (Extremely popular and influential). So to say they have no political power is a flat out lie.

Yes, well said, thread starter, but more people are aware of this than you think. It's a common topic of discussion when race comes up with my friends, who are, for the most part, white, as well as others I've spoken to about it.
Double standards aren't that hard to pick out, it's just harder to get them recognized. |
I can sympathize with this. I grew up in a town that was practically segregated. All the black people lived up to the BET stereotype while the white people( most of them) leaned toward the redneck stereotype. Where I'm from, God forbid you be seen with the opposite race unless you are forced to.
It wasn't easy growing up here as a black girl and being rejected by my own race just because I didn't " act black". I had "good" hair. I hated rap( mainstream. underground is okay) with a passion. I was quiet instead of loud and obnoxious(sp?) like my previous peers which they mistook for being stuck up. I took my education seriously instead of caving into the pressure that it was "uncool" to be smart. I chose to speak the English language instead of incomprenshive slang that involved ( and forgive me for saying this) the word nigga in every other sentence. The fact that I happened to have more white friends than black friends didn't help either. And because of this I had to endure years of bullying and constantly being called a "sellout" or " acting white" by my own people when we are the ones who should stick together after all our ancestor have been through for decades. Ironically, my white friends are the ones who have stood by me my whole life despite the fact that I wasn't "really" black. Since when I did I have to act a certain way to be my race? Even my own mother is afraid I might be turning my back on my people. I am tired of having to prove that I'm black. I shouldn't have to. There are too many racial sterotypes. But there is nothing I can do about. I can rant and rant about all day until I'm blue in the face. Also, racism is racism. It is a part of life. Plain and simple. Even though it annoys the hell out of me. White people aren't the only people who can be racist either. |
