Hip hop vs. Goth rock

Yeah, are these mortal enemies or do any of you actually like both?
----
In general I don't like most hip hop or goth rock that especially much.

I'm kinda more into brutal, violent music, whatever it is called, hip hop, rock, whatever, I like dark and chaotic music.

When I was in junior high people fought a lot about what is the best: hip hop or rock.

Well, the MAINSTREAM hip hop and rock totally sucks to me personally, though I like some hip hop, such as Cage and Insane Clown Posse and I like certain rock music such as Leftover Crack and The Locust.

I am very picky with what music I like, right now I am most into Diamanda Galás (avant-garde, very unusual and dark), Hell Rell (hip hop), Insane Clown Posse (horrorcore hip hop, very brutal), Leftover Crack (rock, except actually good rock) and some others.
----
What is your opinion, are hip hop and gothic rock enemies or do you sometimes like both?

KontanKarite 03-25-2008 12:26 AM

I think they don't give a flying toss about the other.

Dark Clarissa 03-25-2008 12:37 AM

I'm into all kinds of genres of music, Goth rock included, metal, industrial, classical, the occasional bit of dance and pop. However, I've just never heard any hip hop that I like. My daughter listens to it, so I'm exposed to it, but its just not my kind of thing. I suppose we can't all like the same things though as it would be a boring world otherwise :)

bleedingheart344 03-25-2008 12:58 AM

Yeah, ICP's brutal in the same sense that someone shitting into your ear canal is.

Beneath the Shadows 03-25-2008 01:47 AM

I always thought that N'sync was the mortal enemy of goth rock... :p

Draconysius 03-25-2008 07:57 AM

Cannibal Ox is great underground rap/hip-hop, Busdriver's not bad either. You really shouldn't have mentioned ICP though... You just lost all credibility on these forums.

Haunted House 03-25-2008 08:12 AM

I thought that death metal was the mortal enemy of goth due to the mis-lable. That and all of those other genres like nu-metal, "hxc", and whatever the hell Evanescence is.

Tam Li Hua 03-25-2008 09:05 AM

Honestly, my taste in music fluctuates with my mood. :) Sometimes I'm a metal-head, sometimes I'm an old-school Goth, sometimes a techno geek, been known to listen to and appreciate both the Chocolate Swim and DefinitveSwim albums, sometimes feel like listening to classical and/or New Age music [Loreena Mckennitt, Enya, etc.]...

I dunno; just depends on how I feel. :) Just recently, I've wanted to listen to Franz Ferdinand and Muse more than Type O Negative and Sisters of Mercy, so go fig. [Though I -have- been appreciating System Of A Down and Bauhaus more lately..]

Heh heh. Music is eternal, that's for sure! XD

Tam Li Hua 03-25-2008 09:11 AM

For the record, I find fans of one dark music genre wanting to throttle the fans of another dark music genre rather sad.

Amusing, but sad all the same..

THANK YOU!

Tea and Cake or Death 03-25-2008 09:55 AM

There is SOME good hip-hop. It's the old stuff though. I'd say up until the mid 90's. After that, the quality went down A LOT.

Mir 03-25-2008 10:11 AM

Hip hop totally pwns all other genres of music.

How the fuck are music genres I like enemies? While hip-hop is quite firmly rooted in my black culture, liking goth doesn't put me any further away from it.

ICP as hip-hop?! How very lulzy...

Stormtrooper of Death 03-25-2008 06:03 PM

Leftover Crack is a crust punk band. Just to make sure. I got a good list I could give you. Noisecore/D-Beat stuff.

Signe, go away.

(heartofflames) 03-25-2008 06:40 PM

^ is being very short and direct...
About the music, I believe I listen to stuff that really makes you wonder why I even bother coming to the music thread and making a fool of myself. At least I pride myself with knowing a whole bunch of bands the other rock enthusiasts don't.

viscus 03-25-2008 07:09 PM

Signe is back?!

Oh fuck, I must have forgotten to salt the earth after I buried her dismembered corpse.

HumanePain 03-25-2008 07:53 PM

For some reason this thread made me want to listen to Donna Summer's Walk Away.

Just another emotion
or is there something more
if it's only a passionate phase
I'd rather just close the door.

Bop -shhh Bop-shhh Bop-shhh Bop-shhh Bobp-shhh

Yeah, I know it's not Hip-Hop, but Disco, but Hip-hop always takes me back.

electrosexual 03-25-2008 08:35 PM

I love quite a lot of hip hop actually. But not really any of the new stuff. I don't see anything wrong with liking it!

Tea and Cake or Death 03-25-2008 10:19 PM

The thing about being a music lover is that even if you aren't a fan of a band/genre/ style you should still be able to recognize a job well done. I think that's my main problem with rap today. It seems to be phoned in.

Altemese 03-26-2008 07:04 AM

i like all music. i can tolerate hip-hop, but goth rock, i never heard that term used before, but i rather listen to a little of heavy metal, or rock, and a little of alternative, or even "emo music", as my peers put it. however, music is music. if your ears like it, i say go right ahead and listen to it.

Minyaliel 03-26-2008 08:49 AM

Personally, there are a handful of genres that I can't stand and that make me want to puke or grab hold of my ears and tear them off. One of those genres is hip hop/ rap. I don't like the sound; I guess I'm too classically trained to let go of that. I cannot hear the music in hip hop.

KontanKarite 03-26-2008 09:55 AM

I don't care for hip hop. Rap in its infancy was really good. Today's stuff. Actually, anything post Tupac and Bone Thugs that is at all accessible by the general public is pure shit. Especially since pop music has assimilated some of the Rap and RnB sounds into it.

CountSixstring 03-26-2008 11:05 AM

Hip-Hop used to be a very expressive and poetic genre. Not to say that it isn't whatsoever nowadays, but it's been polluted by the media. Goth rock has done almost the same. Before you flip out, just read this. These days, everyone's elitist about such bullshit as "which genre is better?" and why. A good goth rock band these days would play the same old shit because their fellow goths would criticize them for branching out and just hammer them with what ISN'T goth. Not once have I gotten a true answer on what goth-rock is, but I can point it out because I'll go find that the majority in the subculture are no different from one another and they listen to the same stuff just to look good in front of one another, yet claiming what they're doing is different from one another. I believe that at one point both of these genres were great things that separated themselves from the national normality, but now i feel like their both polluted with elitists that don't know half of how to make actual music. Soulja Boy? Please.... That seriously hinders the musical qualities of both genres. Lately, I've been listening to more of the quintessential "Goth" rock, but I learned how to play bass by listening to the old-school west-coast hip-hop. I would abandon neither based on my own concepts of music in general. This debate makes me question how a band with goth rock writing and composing styles combined with the virtuosity of old school hip-hop influences would sound.

Rosie 03-26-2008 02:36 PM

Trip Hop is kind of like in between Hip Hop and Goth Rock sound-wise and it works pretty well IMO.

I like some old school hip hop as well as the hip hop theme from Gurren Lagann.

Mm, I suppose. A lot of it does bear much similarity to Darkwave.

And by the way, Signe, ICP has to be the most god-awful band ever.

Wolf DarkRain 03-26-2008 03:44 PM

Never tried listening to Trip Hop. I've heard negative comments about ICP. What's its sound and how horrible is it?

They're a couple idiots who paint their faces and make rap-rock with asinine lyrics. I don't know what's worse though, them or their fans (who call themselves "Juggalos"). Listen for yourself though, maybe it's your thing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a5RTsOvawUc

And as far as Trip-Hop goes, Massive Attack's CD Mezzanine is aural orgasm.

Underwater Ophelia 03-26-2008 08:30 PM

I like both goth rock and hip-hop.

Oh so very true...

I'd have to say that I enjoy both Goth Rock and Hip Hop, though I don't really think they stand well to be compared to each other.

Opteron_Man 03-30-2008 02:51 PM

I hate Hip hop! Hip hop is NOT music. It's noise. It consists of a bunch of "Gangsters" wearing gold chains, chimping out and grunting through a microphone about being badass niggas.

Complete sound pollution.

By all means, correct me if I am wrong.

††BlackRose†† 03-30-2008 03:10 PM

My sister listens to hip-hop, r&b, and a bit of rap and some other genres like that. Most of the songs are not ones that I personally like, but I cannot deny that some songs are actually not bad and dare I say it, good.

However, I hate rap. Same goes for death metal. If I am wrong, then I do appologize, but it can't be classified as music. Music should by lyrical and the songs should have some sort of meaning attached to them. You cannot possibly achieve the same effect by talking and screaming through the entire song, that you will by using your abilities to carry a tune. That's real talent. Anyone can talk.

Honestly, please comprehend why saying this in the presence of black members who use these boards makes you look ignorant.

Chimping out?! Niggas?! Lord send me a Professor Griff incited riot.

Try again when you've listened to Kool Moe Dee, Public Enemy, De La Soul, Busy Bee, The Session, Boogie Down Productions, Slick Rick, Doug E. Fresh, Heavy D and The Boyz, Naughty By Nature, Wu Tang Clan, Common, Lupe Fiasco.

bleedingheart344 03-30-2008 04:02 PM

I've listened to De La Soul and Public Enemy. It just really isn't my thing. I'm on the fence about the argument you pose, Lolly. On one hand, I could agree that some of Opteron's comments were a tad offensive. On the other hand, I could argue that the dreaded "n word" means absolutely bupkis in modern society. Due to mainstream rap and mainstream culture in general, society has become completely desensitized to the word.

Honestly, my experience has taught me that the only people that care about this are politically correct liberals that hesitate when talking about my heritage, shuffling between calling me a chicano, Mexican, or latino, lest they get it wrong.

Opteron_Man 03-30-2008 04:44 PM

Excuse me! I have nothing against black people. I didn't use the word
Nigge,r anywhere! I used the word niggas. There is a difference. And for the record, I haven't listened to all hip hop. I am judging only the small portion I have heard.

Don't twist my words around! I didn't say black people are bad!

Agreed.

Hip hop as a genre is actually very good. It's just the slew of [hate-to-use-this-term-but] mainstream garbage that's being pumped out nowadays.

Opteron, its quite ignorant to judge a genre of music based on some horrid "examples" of the genre you've listened to.

And the only difference between ****er and ****a is that the latter is just a euphemism for an extremely ignorant term.

Opteron_Man 03-30-2008 04:51 PM

And the reason I used the phrase "chimping out" is because in most of the hip-hop I have heard, the so called "artists" do nothing but rant through a microphone about their view of police, drugs, shooting people and hoes, ect. Also they sound pretty pised off while they are at it.

I was talking about the mainstream garbage. Duh!

Wow! I regret opening my big fat mouth! I had no idea that everybody here would blow my comment completely out of proportion! And pervert what I said. Again I say I am not putting down black people, I have nothing against them. I am saying I don’t like hip-hop! Now I realize that because I have not listened to the full spectrum, I am not an expert. I am only familiar with the small portion that I have heard. That’s what I am commenting on.

I am truly sorry that I offended any members here by my comments.

Why don’t you burn me at the stake for this!

You are SORELY wrong. While I am not a fan of rap or hip hop, I can not honestly say the things you have said here by simply basing my observations with No Limit records or some shit hip hop record label.

Real Hip Hop and real rap are about poetry. If you know a god damned thing about music, you'd know that music requires a key, a time signature, and a beat. Hip Hop has all these elements. Not only that, but I dare you to even half way attempt to say poetry or prose right on the spot at the speed of light.

Where you might have to work at writing your poetry, rappers can pull it out of their asses right on the spot and it be meaningful.

At one time, I shared your views. Then I realized how fucking stupid I was.

Stop Turning Things Into Race Issues When They Are Clearly Not!!!

KontanKarite 03-31-2008 12:02 AM

Who was making it a race issue?

Tea and Cake or Death 03-31-2008 12:26 AM

Um, I think they are after Opteron_Man's blood, KontanKarite.

KontanKarite 03-31-2008 12:34 AM

I can ALMOST understand why.

IsolatedReptile 03-31-2008 08:47 PM

Anyway, I read that someone mentioned Lupe Fiasco earlier. His new album, The Cool, is absolutely fantastic and well worth checking out for anyone who's remotely interested in conscientious rap. If you like that one, his first album, Lupe Fiasco's Food And Liquor was outstanding as well.

Duane 03-31-2008 09:13 PM

Wait... Lupe Fiasco is a dude? Dude, I thought ... heh.
