Religious Symbolism?
I'm not a Christian, but I often wear an intricate silver cross on a chain for the aesthetic. A lot of my non-Christian friends also wear one, some out of satire. People often question me about it, and I explain that I am not Christian but I mean no disrespect, unless they are being aggressive about it which really irritates me. Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone had opinions about wearing crosses or other religious symbols (like pentacles, ankhs or inverted crosses)?
|
I don't have a problem with it until people start putting meanings on the symbols that are clearly wrong. I hate seeing "Satanists" wearing ankhs, pentacles and inverted crosses. I hate Wiccans wearing well... anything, since their whole religion is bullshit and they have no claim to any of the symbols I see them wearing.
|
I don't wear any religious symbols whatsoever since I have no interest in religion whatsoever. :)
|
I think it's tacky to wear religious symbols you don't believe in, but I don't actually care very much.

I love religious symbols as fashion accessories! Seriously, if I could get away with it I would dress as the Pope. What a hat! Or at least as a friar. Stop traffic I would! Heehee.
|
I'd skip on the hat, and just drive the car.
Pope-mobile GOGOGO! Oh and random question: I wanted to get one of those slick black shirts with the white collar that the priests wear, is that "allowed" or what? Could I take out the white insert/collar thingie and be safe? |
I like the way they look, but I won't wear a symbol of a religion I don't believe in.

I like that pic, but that's more a jacket, I was just looking for the dress shirt type thing, to wear with my black trench coat.
|
I like to wear the symbol "the all-seeing eye of God"...
|
I was going to go to my school's own clothes day dressed as a nun, but opted against it when I remembered that being a Catholic school, they'd go nuts.

I wear a pentacle ring but I am actually pagan (no, not wiccan before anyone throws a shitfit ) so for me it has a meaning and I never take it off. I've never liked crosses to be honest, and also do not care for wearing religious symbols whose meanings I have no belief in.

Iron Cross!

I could be considered goth, scene, and emo if you're talking about music and fashion. |

I like wearing a charm bracelet with Dionysus's dolphins and a necklace with a picture of two people's arm intertwing while holding wine glasses. Another one of my favorite necklaces has the outline of a hummingbird, which is an obscure symbol of Hermes.
|
Don't worry about it. If you like, then wear it. I mean, a cross can have different meanings to different cultures. It jus depends who sees it.
|
Out of all the religious imagery I have seen, I really enjoy looking at the Seed of Life / Flower of Life. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flower_...e#Seed_of_Life
There is just something really visually appealing about it to me. |
I wear an Ankh for aesthetics.
Once last year someone asked me why I was wearing a cross and I said "it's an ankh" and she said "what? an oink? OMG HAHAHAHAHA. AN OINK". I saw her wearing one last week. |

Religious symbolism without religious meaning is dumb.

I wear ankhs and scarabs because both their aesthetic and what they stand for are pleasing to me. Plus I bought a lot of them from Egypt itself, so there are memories attached.
I used to wear a celtic cross, not because I'm Christian but because I bought it with my grandfather from Iona Abbey, and as a minister and theologist symbols like that were very important to him. I find personal significance a lot more meaningful than religious, but really I have no problem with people wearing whatever the fuck they want for whatever reasons. Even if it's just because it 'looks cool'. |
The only religious symbols that I have worn were given to me so the significance to me wasn't religious at all

Didn't know that they were really worn outside the clergy though. |
Really, the furthest I go are ankhs mainly for black expression but I wore a rosary once or twice. I thought of keeping it up but I can't be arsed to buy so many.
The rosary currently rests by my bed, literally next to me. |

I am an atheist, but I love the catholic aesthetic in some jewelry and I also like pagan inspired things. I find that aesthetic to be simple and sleek, yet highly expressive.

Scarabs could represent a lot of things, but they were most often representations of the god Khepri who rolled the sun into the sky every morning (also interpreted as the morning 'incarnation' of the sun god Ra). Overall they're symbols of resurrection, regeneration, and the continuity of life on earth that comes with every sunrise. Mummies were never buried without one. |
Ahk. I sort of knew about the ankh thing, I just wanted to confirm that but the scarab thing seems to make sense too.
I see why you like them :) |
I find the whole religious symbol thing rather entertaining, when my catering teacher got back from egypt she gave everyone a bookmark and stuff like that with hyroglyphs (A word I can't spell...) and such on, she saw me walk in in my trench coat and she handed me one but then pulled back, sifted through them and gave me one with an ankh on, saying it must be "More my thing" Which was entertaining.
Also, I wear- Wore... A yin and yang pendant (which went missing so I wore a necklace, which broke last night :'( ) but upon seeing it everyone says 'Oh! peace signs are sooo cool', 'Why are you wearing a hippie thing? STONER!', etc. I take the time to explain things to them to no avail - Same a my sexuality, what's so confusing about liking boys AND girls?! |
I'll wear something if I like how it looks...
