'Plus Size' Models Causes Walk Out

Quote:

Preparing for his London Fashion Week slot, knitwear designer Mark Fast decided to challenge the obsession with size zero models and use curvier women to showcase his creations.

It was a bold move - and one which nearly led to his entire project unravelling.

When he told his design team that his figure-hugging outfits would be paraded down the runway by size 12 and 14 models, two of his people were apparently so angry they quit.

The stylist and creative designer deserted Fast, 28, just three days before Saturday's event at the University of Westminster.

The show was only saved after freelancers Daniela Agnelli and Natalie Hubbarb stepped in to help Fast, working into the early hours to ensure all the designs were ready for the big day.

Happily, it was a great success, with three models from the agency 12+ UK gracing the catwalk.

Amanda May, Fast's creative director, yesterday blamed the walkout on 'creative differences' over the use of larger models. 'There was a team change and we are glad we stuck to our vision,' she said.

'The decision to use fuller girls is something we have been talking about. There's an idea that only thin and slender women are able to wear Mark's dresses and he wanted to combat that. We wanted

women to know they didn't have to be a size zero to wear a Mark Fast dress - curvier women can look even better in them.'

The models used in the show were Hayley Morley, 21, a size 12, Laura Catterall, 20, a size 14 and Gwyneth Harrison, 25, a size 12-14.

Sarah Watkinson, 37, founded 12+ UK in 2000 and has 37 models on her books.

She said: 'I'm very happy that Amanda and Mark stuck to their passion. They really wanted to do it but it was difficult for them.

'Mark has been passionate about using larger women and really wanted to show that they look great in his dresses.

'Every time I think things are progressing, they end up going back to how they've always been. I hope this has sparked lasting changes.'

Fast, a Canadian, has also been involved in the photographic exhibition All Walks Beyond The Catwalk, which features models aged 18 to 65 and sized eight to 16 wearing clothes created by young London designers.

The exhibition, which opened on Friday at Somerset House, attempts to challenge the narrow view of beauty in the fashion world.

The day before Fast's show, chairman of the Institute of Psychiatry's eating disorder team, Professor Ulrike Schmidt, had raised concerns over the use of stick-thin models.

He said: 'We are very concerned that the lack of medical checks of models at London Fashion Week, coupled by an environment where being underweight is the norm, prevents those with eating disorders into gaining an insight into their condition.'

I put 'plus size' in brackets since I think size 12 isn't plus size, but normal.

Pineapple_Juice 09-22-2009 01:03 PM

Well done on him, but I think it's sad that plus sized is considered a 12.

SweetJane 09-22-2009 01:10 PM

Great article. It just goes to show that some people still think that big women can't be successfull. My favorite example of this is Jesscia Hynes, co-writer of spaced.

Simon Peg flipped shit when the Spaced box set was advertised as being writted by him, and didn't aknowledge her. Hynes has a speech about how she was never made to feel like shit until she was at a party with a bunch of successful television and movie people, and everyone ignored her. She just got up and basically said "Guess what? I'm fat and successful!" or whatever.

Pineapple_Juice 09-22-2009 01:19 PM

That's awesome. Also, I've never heard anyone else mention flipping shit besides one other person I know.

I have three friends that I'm closest to, and I can't remember I got that from the one from New Jersey or the one from Dublin haha

Pineapple_Juice 09-22-2009 01:25 PM

Probably Dublin because the person I know who says it got it from his stepmother, and she's from Scotland. Maybe it's an Irish/Scot thing.

SweetJane 09-22-2009 01:31 PM

Those celts have a great vocabulary of swear words. It was deffinitely living with Patrick that pefected my shit-talking.

Pineapple_Juice 09-22-2009 01:39 PM

An extremely important skill to have.

Underwater Ophelia 09-22-2009 02:16 PM

A size 12 is definitely plus sized.

JCC 09-22-2009 02:38 PM

Yeah, those chicks just don't do it for me at all.

I've worn a twelve pant in Dickie's before, and I'm not plus sized.

Saya 09-22-2009 03:14 PM

In our store plus size is above sixteen, and I think Addition Elle which is a plus size store starts at 14, so it seems subjective.

SweetJane 09-22-2009 03:15 PM

Bettie Paige was about a modern size 10... she does a lot for me ;)

Pineapple_Juice 09-22-2009 03:18 PM

I love Crystal Renn. http://images.fashionmodeldirectory....n-fullsize.jpg

JCC 09-22-2009 03:26 PM

That's revolting.

Pineapple_Juice 09-22-2009 03:31 PM

Why?

She might be pretty, but she is still overweight.

She looks a bit out of proportion, specifically her boobs look small for her frame.

Saya 09-22-2009 06:25 PM

Crystal Renn was the model who used to be anorexic, right? If I remember correctly she has a pretty healthy weight now, good for her. That picture kinda reminds me of a painting of Eve I have in a mythology book I own o.O

Honestly I gag a bit when I see models who are emaciated.

As do I but I still like slender and/or athletic women, I don't like visible bones but I'm equally put off by a visible gut. I suppose I'm picky but that is just how I am.

Alan 09-22-2009 07:37 PM

Size twelve is indeed plus sized.
I just wonder why the fuck they have to go with one or the other. It's either size zero or size twelve.
Why not some size five or six? There you go, a model that's thin enough to model clothes and not be anorexic.

Not many people have a flat stomach, I'm underweight and still have a bit of a belly, it just seems healthy to me and not a disease symptom. I'm picky with girls when I'm checking them out but I have different standards for people I think are beautiful and people I think are beautiful and I'm sexually attracted to.

Its really nice when you're looking at clothes to see it modelled on someone your size. So I think really there should be a range, certain clothes look great on someone plus size and certain clothes look great on size zeros, and others look great on us in between. To be fair in this show he did use skinny models as well, too. While I get that models should be easy on the eyes so the clothes they are wearing look more appealing I don't get why they should be pressured into a narrow range of sizes that could be completely unhealthy for them and make them look worse.

Solumina 09-22-2009 08:26 PM

There is a difference between having a normal stomach and a gut. As I said I have rather high standards and a good bit of that is most likely because I do have a flat stomach and I know what little effort it takes to have a toned stomach (toned doesn't necessarily mean flat), a model's job is to look good so they should be toned.

She's still hotter than Underwear.

Alan 09-22-2009 08:49 PM

Was there a second sentence you forgot to add?

HavelockV 09-22-2009 09:08 PM

Personally I found the curvaceous model in the black dress leading the end-of-show procession to be much more appealing than the emaciated creature directly behind her. The lead model appears more healthy, vibrant, and confident. The second model in line seems as though she's contracted a wasting illness and would shatter with the slightest breeze.

Bravo to the designer for choosing to include some non-waifish women in his show!

Pineapple_Juice 09-22-2009 10:25 PM

Wellllll I think she's beautiful. I also think real skinny girls are unattractive. I think women look better with big hips and boobies and stuff.

No. Underwear is Underwater Ophelia's nickname.

Alan 09-23-2009 07:54 AM

No, I mean she said she might be pretty, and then you said "she's still prettier than you."

Despanan 09-23-2009 09:10 AM

I took that to be a backhanded way of saying the girl isn't attractive, as in:

"She's pretty, but she's fat, so she's not attractive"

Maybe I was mistaken, though still, I was stating a fact: she is prettier than Ophelia, with or without the extra baggage.

what someone should say ,should not have said or if they forgot to write something or you not have wrote it in the first place.

Personally I don't like dating really skinny chicks, it just doesn't do anything for me.

I wouldn't consider her to actually be FAT, I'd say she's a big woman, but unless that pic is super misleading...yeah. Not what I would consider fat.

I'm the same way. What can I say, I like big butts. But that's kind of a cultural thing I think.

I remember being with my friends Nicola and Vesna, and Vesna's mom was straight off the boat Serbian Catholic. Vesna was really lean and tall, I was somewhere in the middle, and Nicci was about a size 12/14, and every once and a while Vesna's mom would be like "YOU need to EAT!! EAT!! YOu need to get fat like Nicola so you can find a husband!!"

The thing was that I always saw both of them as beautiful, but I'm way more likely to notice proportion than weight... I mean, before like really unhealthy wieght. It's not like these girls are wearing like size 22 on the runway.

Google her, she has a picture where you can visibly see rolls. Shit is not cash.

On a related note, I also found this story on the Daily Mail website. It is most interesting how the judges on the show felt that the grotesquely underweight contestant possessed a "sensational" body, while the voting public favored the lovely fuller-figured model.

Thank you. I saw the two different version of the same quote in the sig of two people and thought: "What the hell, I can do that too." Originally the target was going to be children, but that would change the quote too much so I decided on this.

Are you fucking shitting me? I don't find fat people attractive and this chick is a fucking model; am I meant to feel bad for being superficial about a woman whose job is making people think she's hot?

You probably right there zerademark ,it would have not work as well.

I either shit, or I fuck. Never on the same time. But I do know some people who might assist you on that if you want.

Everyone their own taste. I never implied to force you for finding fat people attractive. I've been complaining on your boundaries of what size you consider people being fat. Even if someone has some rolls doesnt mean she's fat or so. Also you seem to be implying "fat" equals something bad.

and this chick is a fucking model; am I meant to feel bad for being superficial about a woman whose job is making people think she's hot?

Being a model means illusioning people that you are attractive. Same goes for skinny and fat people.

DRM 09-23-2009 03:38 PM

No Zera, it's about actually being attractive.
Like Dita Von Teese says, their body is their job, so they should do their best to make it as good as they can.

I actually agree with all of you to an extent; there should be some kind of middle ground. While I found that model to be attractive, I can also see that she's overweight... I just think that being "as good as it can" shouldn't mean anorexic; it should literally be as healthy as it can.

There's no reason she can't have a healthier diet and exercise more rigorously if she's going to be a model.

But as I mentioned before, this mentality carries over and effects the lives of women who don't want to be models. For example, why should Jessica Hynes be overlooked because of her appearance, where there are plenty of overweight male commedians?

True or not, we aren't talking about pretty girls, we're talking about fat girls.

Despanan 09-23-2009 05:15 PM

Considering what I've seen of your pictures I wouldn't exactly call you "thin" Underwear.
