If you can delete one word from the english dictionary, what would it be?

I think it is pretty obvious that you post the one word you hate in English and wish to erase it from the whole language.
Mine is: Love.

Geoluhread 10-26-2009 12:38 PM

And the point of this is .......?

Delkaetre 10-26-2009 01:07 PM

If you can delete a word, what would it be and WHY is the more important thing, I would suggest.

Saying you'd delete "love" and not saying anything else just appears trite- a failed attempt to look lonely, deep or misanthropic.

I'd rather delete a term like ni**er. The word is used viciously, exclusively and almost always to someone's detriment. When used by non-blacks, it is considered offensive and derogatory. When used by black individuals, even in the context of 'taking it back' for empowerment, it is used to the exclusion of others on a racial rather than cultural basis. The word has no positive or even genuinely useful use. It is not elegant, descriptive, functional. When used negatively, it is vicious and harks back to a time that should no longer exist. When used positively, it's still used to set a group apart and deny all others on the basis of birth.

Other words could be removed under the same reasoning- "Paki" is a word that no one except racist scum need.

But I'd never actually advocate removing a word. All words exist. The sign of your personality, intelligent and ethical choice is in how you use them.

αρнσтι¢ єι∂σℓση 10-26-2009 02:06 PM

Dear God! I'm terribly sorry, I didn't mean it to sound like this, you see I do not believe in love at all, that is what I meant by saying love, because to me it is meaningless.
Alright, why, it should be real interesting for that one.
- I am sure that this post answers the question why I choose that word.
Anything out of that, I apologize. I had no intention of doing anything you or whoever would reply to this thread that would be inappropriate whatsoever.

Sorry to derail your thread, but in fairness it was fairly obtuse anyway so I'm not sorry, but I want you to elaborate on what you mean by not believing in love. Starting now.

You don't get laid much, do you?

Anyway, I say pretty much the same thing as Delkaetre said. As languages evolve, certain words get replaced, and the cycle just goes on and on...

Delkaetre 10-26-2009 03:26 PM

If we get rid of "love", it would really take the impact out of certain phrases.
The porn industry and indeed the heat of passion between couples might take a severe blow without the use of "oh god, I love your *bodypart*". Replacing it with "I really really like your *bodypart*" just doesn't have the same ring to it.

So even if you don't believe in romantic love, spare a thought for the industry of lust instead.

Slap Your Love 10-26-2009 03:29 PM

Not a troll. Just pathetic.

Sinjob 10-26-2009 03:33 PM

You guys suck, I'm pitching in.

Mine: PRUDE

αρнσтι¢ єι∂σℓση 10-27-2009 11:47 AM

I don't believe in love as in love between sexes, as pointed out by Delkaetre.
Love exists in families, perhaps.
But when it comes to a sexual romantic love relationship between two humans, it only orbits around Lust, obsession, addiction and desire.
To me, these things, apart from obsession and addiction, are not humanitarian, it's barbarian.
Ending that, I apologize again if you are one to love looking high and mighty -No offence intended- and seeing that I am still a child and might be ignorant makes probably the older the better to hear out.
Thank you Sinjob for playing along. (///.^)

So.... you wouldn't delete the actual word, just a couple of definitions.

Thats a very particular type of love and we have a word for that kind already, infatuation.

I love apologies that aren't really apologies but just a dickish cop out.

No problem at all. Prude is really a word we must get rid of entirely.

Mourning Would 10-28-2009 08:12 AM

Mine is: hate

I don't mean to come across as hippy-ish, I'm just so sick of people never being able to get along with one another. If we didn't have hate, we wouldn't have wars, everything would be peaceful, and people who don't really fit in with the majority wouldn't need to be afraid to walk out their front door.

Sir Canvas Corpsey 10-28-2009 07:07 PM

Getting rid of the word won't erase hate. Are you really that naive?

vindicatedxjin 10-28-2009 07:11 PM

Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia.... Definition is the fear of long words. Tell me what idiot decided to come up with that???

I knopw that, but it would be nice to live in a world with even just a little less hate

Anarasha 10-29-2009 04:02 PM

Twilight.
This otherwise very nice and sophisticated word has been worn thin by a horrible sexual wannabe vampire novel series.
The very word Twilight brings up the hate and the urge to kill in me.

*sigh* Please, use that squishy thing between your ears now and again, will you? Now would you kindly go to Google.com.

gothicusmaximus 10-29-2009 04:55 PM

Probably 'epic'.

Joker_in_the_Pack 10-30-2009 09:06 AM

Probably Avante Garde (sp). It's such a pretentious word that merely hearing it makes me have rage fits.

A world without constant "*facepalm*"-ing is a world I wouldn't mind living in.

Not Tha Duckman 10-30-2009 06:35 PM

Or that really annoying "Blah XYZ is blah" bullshit. Not a word, but makes me want to shank a Mother fucker.

the-nihilist 10-30-2009 07:12 PM

I would erase "the"

Krick Wurkheiser 10-31-2009 07:09 PM

I think I'd take out "unacceptable" "taboo" or "unnatural". I'm sick of people telling me what's natural and proper behaviour and what or not I should be doing...

Cosmicgaunt 11-01-2009 12:01 AM

The word, "like".

carakitty 11-04-2009 09:36 PM

I declare this thread to be asinine.
NO matter what word got taken out of a dictionary, it's meaning would still live on and people would just figure out a new word to put in it's place.
Let the words live in peace!

Agreed. What's the point of deleting words from the dictionary? Even if you would remove it, a new one with the same meaning will show up eventually. Languages change, old words are replaced by new ones. Anyone who has ever read any classical literature can notice it.

carakitty 11-05-2009 04:42 PM

Even if you've read something from just a decade ago! Language is constantly evolving. There's new slang being born every day. I think there may be an inner linguist here begging for some nurturing...

Sinjob 11-05-2009 04:45 PM

The coolness factor has now totally gone up in this thread.

Razeal18 11-05-2009 04:51 PM

i would rather delete words from common usage like kinda, sort and whatever, these words vex me when in usage especially when givin as an answer to a very serious question they are evasive and cowardly arrrgh. i also think the word onomonapia is assinine

carakitty 11-05-2009 10:02 PM

But Razeal,
Kinda, sorta, etc, are just bastardizations of the actual words 'kind of' and 'sort of'. If someone answers 'whatever' to a question they are too stupid to think things through or the question wasn't really that deep to begin with.

Why do you think onomonapia is asinine? Only one 'n' in asinine BTW. I learned that when I looked it up on dictionary.com to verify that it was indeed the proper word to describe my feelings. And I just looked up 'onomonapia' as well. I always thought that was a cool word to work with. Apparently you spelled that one wrong too though.

LovelyxBlackLace 11-08-2009 05:58 AM

Absolutely - Everyone says it, no one means it, it drives me crazy. "Yes," "correct," "I agree," or even the overused "precisely," would be more tolerable.

LovelyxBlackLace 11-08-2009 06:01 AM

Oh and actually, "Actually" - it's constantly overused!

Seeing that you completed your quest to delete the Shift-key on your keyboard I'd say you could succeed...

LovelyxBlackLace 11-08-2009 07:11 AM

Sorry I just have to point this out...

Antiquing — shopping for antiques

I hate it. When I go to the grocery store, am I fooding?

Onomatopoeia is one of my favourite words.

Anarchist Ninja 11-25-2009 04:30 PM

Probably the word 'frosting'. Something about that word I just hate...

I think we can live by saying icing. Much shorter too.

KissMeDeadly 11-26-2009 09:32 AM

Can I delete slang? Because I would delete "dude". Now, I'm known to let a "dude" slip every now and then, however, I live in the deep south of the United States, and I get that mongrel redneck-gangsta type speech that just brings my piss to a boil.

"Hey dude, man, dude, I got this shit dude, it's badass dude straight 'foir' (fire) dude! Shits 20 a G dude, you want it dude?"

-Actual quote from a random guy outside the movie theater trying to sell me overpriced weed.

I think it would be better to simply delete the deep south.

Tam Li Hua 11-26-2009 11:22 AM

I wish we could incorporate the Greek versions of the different kinds of Love, rather than deleting the concept completely.

Mine would be "Fuck". I get tired of hearing and using it after a while. Yet, I love it.

"So strange is this heart of man." -- Toki Wartooth, Metalocalypse

Keni 12-25-2009 06:25 PM

There are so many words to choose from!

I would want to get rid of the term
"f*g hag".

Oh dear, thats actually not a "word." But still. . .
its terrible.

If you are a person of the female variety that tends to hang out with people of homosexual orientation, then you are instantly a
"f*g hag."

It just sounds so unpleasant and durogatory. (spelling? bleh, i cant think right now.)

ape descendant 01-05-2010 09:59 AM

"sharted" It's probably not in a proper dictionary, but jeeze... you can just say "hey, I shit my pants.. I had better go to the bathroom in a hurry!", instead of sounding like some slobbering piece of shit frat-boy... "heh heh, I sharted."

It's not the concept.. just the word... blech.

cilminum 01-05-2010 01:55 PM

I especially love the "Everything was beautiful and nothing hurt." I also think the "DON'T PANIC." one was pretty awesome as well. I haven't decided yet, but what would you get tattooed/have had tattooed?

I would probably delete the word "za" because in all reality, we don't need a slang word for pizza.

I mean, pizza is a short word on its own, and I just think it's a ridiculous word.

Lochnar 01-14-2010 11:33 PM

If I could delete one word from the English dictionary what would it be? Well my reasoning may be shallow but I would delete "kudos".

It just fucking pisses me off to hear that damn word batted about an office like they have any fucking idea of what it means while they apply it to the most banal of situations humanly possible. "Oh Phil, kudos on clearing that paper jam!" I want to seize them about the throat and bash their fucking heads on a convinced hard surface and skull fuck them until the goddamn crotch fruit they call their children qualify for Medicare...

I feel a little better now. Thank you.

Amunet 01-15-2010 01:58 PM

Ya uhh. For the sake of being an asshole, I will erase the word "DICTIONARY"

so fuck you. :)
