Old Habits/Childish Fears

I still bite my nails.

I take paper (especially the kind that rip off the edges that came on tests) and fold them up.

I chew on my pens and paper.

I still tuck my feet under my blanket cause I'm scared that Freddy Krueger will claw me to death.

I won't sleep on my bed with any limbs hanging over the edge cause I still get scared a something is going to bite them.

And my bed is in the corner in the room with one side against the wall, and I refuse to sleep with my back facing the room cause I get nervous if I can't see the room.

So theres mine, what's yours?

Godslayer Jillian 02-23-2006 09:00 PM

I do almost the same at bed, but I face the corner so that if something kills me I won't know.

I also have to sleep with my stuffed panda, and now since St Valentines, also with the panda and heart-shaped cushion Ana gave me

peeves 02-23-2006 09:07 PM

I bite my nails, and I'm afriad of clowns

Binkie 02-23-2006 09:21 PM

If I'm on my stomach, I'll still sleep with my hand over my belly button cause I used to think someone would shove a long needle through the mattress and through my belly button.

Godslayer Jillian 02-23-2006 09:27 PM

I would tell you what scares me the most, but if I told you, there's no doubt someone would post a picture of him, and I would enter an epilleptic state if I saw it, hehe

darkangel29 02-23-2006 09:32 PM

I still have the childish fear of falling out of bed, even though it still happens occasionally, so I hug the wall and hope to whatever God I pray to that I won't end up on the floor.

An old habit... I doubt any of you have heard of it... is playing with my elbow, when I get really nervous or scared, my hand shoots up to my elbow and plays with the scar on it... Ok, It's my safety net... I do that and bite my nails...

Seriously... how much weirder can I get...?

*Prays Kevin doesn't read this anytime soon*

KeltikAon 02-23-2006 09:44 PM

I have to sleep facing the door. When I am nervous I twist my hair around my fingers. And I have an unreasonable fear of clowns.

eyesofatragedy 02-23-2006 09:45 PM

I'm also afraid of Pennywise from It.

And if I hear the noise that that girl in "The Grudge" makes I start crying and screaming cause it really scares me.

Blushing Heliophobe 02-23-2006 11:58 PM

Hehehe.

I just now started making myself go to the bathroom in the dark - I never have been able to because of a amovie I saw when I was a kid. I always think a monster is going to come up out of the toilet and eat my butt.

I can't sleep with any limbs over the bed either.

I have to curl up my fist and cover my mouth with it. I'm not sure why, but it makes my face feel safer, probably from being accidentaly hit.

I have to have a door wide open, or shut, because I'm scared that it'll shut on it's own.

I am always afraid of being sneaked up on in the shower so I have a shower curtain with a strip of see-through clear plastic at eye level so I can see everything.

If I drop my toothbrush, I throw it away.

I still fold my towels the way my mom used to make me do it.

:)

wild spider 02-24-2006 01:41 AM

terrified of crabs...

had a dream when i was really little that one attatched itself to my toe and i couldnt get it off and been terrified of them since.

maniquins also a big fear. :(

Blushing Heliophobe 02-24-2006 02:09 AM

Oh, Wild, you just reminded me -

I always think that as soon as I turn my back, mannequins are going to reach out and slap me.

Also, my grandma made me and my sisters touch the cold dead body of my grandfather when we were little. It scared me. I remember that he looked like he was sleeping, and now I think that the second you get close to a body, all of a sudden the eyes will open, it'll gasp for air, and grab you.

wild spider 02-24-2006 04:12 AM

well thats disturbing...

never seen a deadbodyup close. sawaguy get nearly decapitated

Wise Child 02-24-2006 04:22 AM

I used to eat paper when I was little. I still catch myself absent-mindedly tearing off little bits and going to put them in my mouth, in times of stress. I usually catch myself in time to remind myself that I am twenty-one years old and NOT a waste paper basket. But if I actually put it in my mouth, it's all over. Once I get the taste I just go nuts.

Yeah, I know... fruit loop. Sigh.

Blushing Heliophobe 02-24-2006 04:41 AM

Hahaha!!! We used to have paper-eating contests in the second grade. I ate enough to earn myself an awesome cafeteria cookie once, which I promptly threw up.

Thought I was the only one...

Metatron 02-24-2006 04:47 AM

I have an ungodly fear of sirens. I don't know why, but when I was younger, I'd always dream about the nuclear holocaust. Missile sirens scare me to death.

I still cry when Mufasa dies in the Lion King, and when he comes back, and when Simba reclaims the throne. I'm pathetic, I know.

edible_eye 02-24-2006 06:16 AM

i bite my nails. it's horrible. my fingers bleed often.

childhood fears? i do, every-so-often, spike a panic-filled heart while laying in bed and a limb dangles over the side.

the ocean - thanx to 'jaws'. my father brought me to see 'jaws' when i was 7, i believe and the next day, we went to jones beach on long island. i stood at the edge of the ocean, not allowing the water to so much as touch my toes. to this day, i can't get into the ocean past my thighs and if the water is murky - forget it.

crying - i cry every time murron gives young william wallace the thistle at his father's funeral in 'braveheart'.

i can't drive into new york without pronouncing the roadsign - 'nyack so nyack'. i say "nee-yack, so nee-yack", instead of pronouncing it correctly.

Blushing Heliophobe 02-24-2006 06:23 AM

The thing about Jaws is funny. I always expect to see Jaws come at me when I'm swimming in the deep end of the pool.

Yup, both of those really scare me too!

I also twirl my hair round my fingers incessantly when I'm nervous (sometimes my finger gets stuck!)

At night I have to sleep with the duvet covering whichever ear isn't on the pillow (I sleep on my side). I think it's because I shared a room with my brother as a kid and he used to snore really loudly!!

I always say "see ya later kitty" to my cat before I leave him alone in the house - otherwise something bad might happen to him!

I'm a nutcase, I know...

Deviant Kitten 02-24-2006 07:05 AM

I forgot to say that I also sometimes catch myself chewing on bits of paper like I did when I was a child - I thought I was the only one, Wise Child and Blushing!!

By the way, Blushing, you remind me of the lovely Willow from Buffy in your avatar :-)

TStone 02-24-2006 07:11 AM

I try to never take the same route, that way if someone is trying to kill me—they’ll not easily chart my patterns and s n uff me out without some preparedness on my part.

Cars on the road. I have this weird phobia that some car out there holds a man with a gun that will shoot me if I cut him off, and I wonder if, right before he pulls the trigger, if I’ll have time to juke my vehicle into his and take him with me.

I have a general fear of spiders, so I hunt and kill them wherever they may hide.

A fear of crowds since it becomes difficult to size up everyone at the same time, sensory overload and all that, and I’ve ever been distrustful of the mob mentality.

Sometimes I get an uncontrollable fear late at night if I’m on the beach surf-fishing, and get the impression something wants to eat me as badly as I want to eat it. So I wade out further to see if anything bites.

A deep loathing for canary yellow. It doesn’t scare me, I just hate it.

Cats with six toes and Hemingway for letting them prosper.

Lucky Charms, because nothing should be magically delicious.

Bad habits.

Drinking alone would top the list, which kind of plays into my fear of crowds, plus I’m apt to wax philosophical whilst inebriated, and that’s just retarded, especially in the company of decent folk trying to have a good time.

I chew my nails. I chew and chew until they bleed.

I clip my toenails until they bleed. I pull out hunks of meat with nail, I should know better, but I just can’t stand the sight of my nails.

I pluck body hair; arms, goatee, nose, eyebrows, lashes.

I grind my teeth.

I like looking at my snot after I blow my honker.

Eh, there are more to be sure, but that’ll do for now ;}

OUCH!!! *weeps for TStones mutilated toes*

My boyfriend bites his nails too (fingernails, that is!) and sometimes makes them sore. I tell him to leave them alone but it's a compulsion for him. Same as me and my constant hair-twiddling I suppose!

Blushing Heliophobe 02-24-2006 07:47 AM

Thanks, Deviant, that's a hell of a compliment.

Stone - I also 'pick' when I am extremely agitated. I'll just grab a pair of tweezers and go to town. Sometimes my eyebrows suffer for it and I can't stop.

Nervous disorder, maybe, if you do it when you're upset.

Lucky Charms are so good to eat. I eat them often. Out of mixing bowls, because a regular bowl is not large enough to contain their marshmallowy yumminess.

I'm one nervous person... Sometimes I like to bite my nails when I'm nervous...lately I just play with knives or any other sharp object and always end up slitting my fingers...No scars, except for a few, but it just feels funny...been doing it for a long time now!!

Deviant Kitten 02-24-2006 08:51 AM

You're welcome, Blushing, you priddy thang! :-)

I thought of a couple more while I was walking into town just now: Cars are seriously scary! When I see one coming towards me (even when I'm on the pavement/sidewalk) I often get a horrible feeling that it's going to run me over. Especially when I'm walking down a quiet country lane and a lone car comes zooming towards me - it nearly makes me crap myself! I'm paranoid that the driver might be a homicidal maniac looking for target practise...

Another vehicle related one is having to walk past building sites and roadworks where they're using those huge diggers - ever since I was little I've been worried that one will scoop me up! They always look like they've got minds of their own. Evil minds.

The vehicles of the world are out to get me, I say!! :-P

eyesofatragedy 02-24-2006 09:24 AM

I have one more.

I hate to walk in a dark room. If I leave my room I run and turn the light on in the next room and then the next till I reach where I want to go. After I get what I want (which is usually a drink of water) I hurry and run to each room turning off the lights as I go.

Oh and when I finally reach the top of the stairs I look down to make sure no monsters are there.

And Edible, Jaws scares me too. Main reason I freaked out when I went to the coast. My parents kind of did the same thing to me but it was the movie "IT" that they let me see and then I turned six and they got me a clown (who I think was drunk) and then I went to the circus.

Needless to say, I don't like clowns.

Jacks Girl 02-24-2006 09:39 AM

I can't sleep unless the blanket covers me all the way up to my ears, and the bottom of it has to be tucked around my feet so that no evil nasty monsters can grab them in the night. I also hate walking into dark rooms. I either have to run straight through as fast as my legs will carry me or scrabble around untill i find the light switch. Clowns make me feel ever so slightly terrified...and the scary thing is, if they find out you don't like them they'll kidnap you and turn you into one! waaaaaaah!

Defy 02-24-2006 09:40 AM

I bite my nails too
I try to stop it but I can't resist it

And I not shower in the dark because it remind me of Psycho’s classic scene

Tall One In Black 02-24-2006 09:55 AM

I got over my childhood fears by being the analytical geek that I am. For example, there was always a lot of junk under my bed. I decided that there was no room for a monster - except maybe a tiny one, and he would be so puny that I shouldn't be afraid of him. And as for being afraid of the dark - if there was light in the room, an attacker could find me. But if the room was pitch black, he wouldn't be able to see me and would likely even stumble and fall, thus waking me and allowing me to escape (I knew my way around my room in the dark, after all).

Now I like my bedroom silent and dark because I'm a light sleeper, but none of it is related to fear. I'll sleep in any position I want, with or without covers, with the bed anywhere in the room. Sometimes I even wear earplugs and a sleep mask! :O

I do, however, still carry something from childhood - I get depressed at bedtime. I lie down in bed and feel a wave of loneliness and sadness wash over me. Sometimes it makes me cry. When I was a teenager, it happened almost every night. Now it's just occasionally.

Metatron 02-24-2006 10:04 AM

Well, when I was younger I had this lifesize version of Bugs Bunny which would scare the shit out of me. My parents would put it right outside my closet door, and every day I had to move it back in. It was really scary!

IlGato_DiDiablo 02-24-2006 10:44 AM

Oh my God Xng! I sleep with Sheepie!! Eeek!! It's sooooooo cute! I want it! I'll post a pic of Sheepie the Sheep when I get my camera back!!! :D

* Squeezes the hell out of Sheepie and smiles like a 2 year old *

I love darkness so much! When I was a kid, if the lamp was switched on, I'd freak out so badly 'cause I'd think that an evil ghost is going to come out of the shadow from the wall!

eyesofatragedy 02-24-2006 10:51 AM

Dammit I almost regret making this thread, cause there are so many things that scare me!

When I was younger I had all my stuffed animals and Hello Kitty on my bed. I arranged them just so everymorning and they stay that way even when I was sleeping. The reason being that if any of my toys fell on the ground or if one thought I loved another toy more they would come in the night and hurt me.

So even if it meant sleeping in an ackward postion, all my toys stayed on the bed. And I said good night to everyone.

Man, I get scared of too many things.....

Godslayer Jillian 02-24-2006 10:55 AM

I have to talk to a gummy bear before eating it.
I always miss my food when it's gone.
I have to do my hair before putting on a shirt. So basically, I can't weear a polo shirt or Tshirts or they will mess up my hair

Metatron 02-24-2006 10:59 AM

Aww! That's so funny! Now as I remember, I used to be afraid of the school nurse. Honestly, I'd cower in her presence. She was tall, skinny, had a really white face, high cheek bones, a pointy chin, black hair, and her name was Dorothy. It was bad.

Saya 02-24-2006 11:16 AM

When I eat Lucky Charms, I save all the marshmellows for last.
I used to be afraid of sharks ever since I saw Jaws as a kid. I have overcome this, however, by watching Shark Week on Discovery Channel all the time.
If I'm getting undressed in my room, I don't like it if a doll is looking at me. I have to turn it around.
I will not step on cracks.
I still cry watching Edward Scissorhands.
I still like sleeping with a teddy bear.

IlGato_DiDiablo 02-24-2006 11:28 AM

What's the story behind 'I will not step on cracks?'

Is it plain superstition(?)....?

Metatron 02-24-2006 12:00 PM

Oh, Oh, Oh! I'm the same with Berry Berry Kix! I have to save all of the berries until last, and then I drink the pink milk. I'm such a kid.

OCD Insomnia 02-24-2006 12:30 PM

I don't like walking outside in the dark alone.
I'm addicted to captain crunch.
I add 4 more cups of suger to koolade than im supposed to
I watch cartoons all the time :)

Pathogen. 02-24-2006 02:21 PM

Old Habits [from childhood]:

*Sucking my thumb [did that until age 12, when I realised how babyish it really was].

*I still bite my own nails occasionally.

*I still crack my knuckles [old habit that started at age 12].

Childish Fears:

*I still consider public ridicule my #1 greatest fear.

*I feared other people intensely for a few years [ages 9-11]. Call it agoraphobia or whatever, but it was more intense shyness than anything else. I was especially afraid of bullies. This & childish fear #1 are somehow connected for me.

*The Ku Klux Klan and other White racists [& rightfully so, I was a Black kid on the East Coast].

I have the exact same thing. Or, probably not exactly, but it's like that most every night, and I've had it ever since I can remember. Don't know what it is about that lonely chill that makes me feel all snug, but it's definitely something I equate with serenity. Sometimes it's like I can't go to sleep without thinking of something really sad, and be almost on the brink of crying.

It's hard to get to sleep with a headache and a snotty nose though, so I try to avoid that...

Apart from this particular thing, I can't really think of any specific habits and fears that stick from childhood. Other than generally being a geeky, neurotic loner, of course.

And in Norway, there are no monsters under kids' beds. It's just too cramped under there. You have your standard trolls, gnomes and such, but they live in the mountains.

I guess you have embraced it... I hate it. I definitely don't equate it with serenity. It's like an invasion from an old enemy that won't leave me alone after all these years. Sometimes it physically hurts.

Indeed! I've learned that if I sit up in bed, my head doesn't hurt as much and I can *almost* retain the ability to breathe. It also keeps the pillow from getting wet with tears... you can only turn the thing over/around so many times. :P

pitseleh 02-24-2006 03:24 PM

Yeah, I guess saying I "equate it with serenity" was a bit... rich. Tossing and turning in the throes of some fit of melancholy/anxiety isn't exactly peaceful. But you're right, I probably have embraced it to some degree. Or at least, it's become a habit.

As for the pillow thing, I think someone should make one that's like a rectangle:

"Twice the turning power! Ultra-absorbing tear-tampon center!"

:P

Yes, truly a Goth Pillow. In your choice of black, black, or black.

Der Kaltmacher 02-24-2006 05:29 PM

Hm. Fears. Well... I could never sleep with my bedroom door open, I was always so afraid of what I'd see lurking in the dark hallway.

Also, when I was younger, I was terrified of looking out this long thin window by the door at night, I would turn my back to it as I went by, for fear of seeing a nun standing on the lawn. oO;;; (I was rather scared of nuns when I was younger.)

And... as for habits. The only thing that comes to mind at the moment is... I [unconsciously] run a hand through my hair. Alot. It's actually a bit obsessive.

Circle V 02-24-2006 05:55 PM

Whenever I find something small and metallic or plastic, I put it in my mouth. Find a paperclip on the floor? If I play with it longer enough, I will always end up chewing on it. I do the same with plastic pens, even if they're not mine. I always bend paperclips into strange shapes. Recently, I've taken to looping the mutilated clips into the buttonholes in my shirt. I've got three of them staring up at me right now.

I ate a cough drop that I found on the floor in school today. It was still in its wrapping, though.

I like to scare myself by, for example, walking through the house at night, purposely turning my back to dark doorways, and putting my face right up to a window at night before opening the blinds.

In my old house, my room incorporated a short hallway with two doors on the left side that lead to the room itself. The first door was a saloon-style set of swinging doors, open at the top and bottom, that led to a walk-in closet with a floor-to-ceiling mirror on the far wall. Walking by the door always scared me, since I couldn't track both the darkness above the door and the darkness below as I walked by. Since the light switch for the closet was on the far side of the door, I had to walk by the unlit closet every night.

Once time, I turned out every light in my room, entered the closet, sat facing the mirror (with my back to the door), placed my camera on the floor next to me (also facing the mirror), set the timer, and waited, the little red light on the camera the only thing visible in the darkness. While I waited, it occured to me that I would be able to see behind myself in the mirror in the impending flash of the camera. It also occured to me that, if I were to see something behind me, I would be unable to get by it to escape.

The picture didn't come out. I never tried it again.

I slept on the top bunk of my bed. No one slept below me. There was no ladder on the cheap bed (the top bunk was held in place by four twig-like pegs) so I had to vault off of my bedside table in order to reach it. I would turn off the light and run at the table, trying to stay as far away from the darkness below the bed as possible.

I also, amazingly, acquired the ability to pick up my pillow off of the floor (it feel almost every night) without getting out of the top bunk.

A few friends of mine stayed the night at my house. I felt like having fun, so I told them that my room was scary. They didn't believe me. I rattled off a list of reasons why, and successfully kept them from...

...Wanting to sleep in my bunk (your face is almost exactly at head level for whatever may want to visit you in the night, so it was scary just to open your eyes because you'd be certain that a face would be leering back)...

...The bottom bunk (never know what's beneath you)...

...The floor by the bed (again, never know what's below the bed)...

... And the floor by the hallway (I managed to make them fear the closet more than I ever did.)

Godslayer Jillian 02-24-2006 06:12 PM

You're evil:D

eyesofatragedy 02-24-2006 06:14 PM

Indeed. If I had friends like that I would cried and screamed and never spend a night at a friends again.

Maybe it's a boy thing. Well either that or I get scared too easily.
