Which films scared you the most as a kid?

Alien
Deliverance
The Shining
Night of the living dead

Thriller, the Michael Jackson video. I know its not a film but it scared the shite out of me.

Um... this is so shameful I've never posted it - not in confessions, Guilty Pleasures, Childhood Fears... but I gotta get it out, it's eating me up.

When I was a kid, I loved this film called *mumbles shamefully with head down* The Beastmaster.

It was so dire. It really was. Borderline porno if I recall, although I was too young & innocent to notice at the time... the beastmaster's companion was a slave girl, et cetera... I just liked it because of all the animals. But anyway, there was this bit where the baddie was conjuring or something, and suddenly this white face with blood and veins and nasty shit comes up out of the cauldron. Scared the fuck outta me, every time. I don't know how many nights' sleep I lost to that scene, but it was a sizeable number.

And The Shining. Although, I watched it bare since I was in the early phases of my present-day Jack Nicholson worship, and it did get less scary, although it never stopped giving me the creeps.

Wise child do you remember The killer false teeth from mars, it was on TV when we were kid. Scared the hell out of me. Before you lath bear in mind I was 6.

The film that got me the most as a child was Kingdom of the spiders, it stared Capitan Kirk in the days he was having trouble finding work. Think of 8 legged freaks but not as big.

Don’t get me wrong, I like spiders but not when there’s fuckimg millions of the them eating their way through a mountain town.

The Shining
 

I picked up a copy of The Shining for a fiver in HMV last week.

Considering I have not watched it since I was 11 , It’s just as good as I remember it, in addition to the big “here’s Johnny!” moments, there are so many creepy little touches:

- Danny standing on a chair throwing darts at the dartboard. Becomes aware that he is being watched, turns around and sees the two girls staring at him. The girls walk out holding hands without saying a word…

- Danny riding on bike with the camera tracking him round corners . He turns a corner, then another, then another, and then guess who is at the end of the corridor…

- Danny stops outside room 238 - looks at the door with fear and suspicion, tries to open it – it’s locked, and rides off on his bike.

- Danny playing with toys on the carpet, all of a sudden a ball is playfully rolled up to him – despite the fact his parents are nowhere near..

- Jack going into the room 238. Thinks – why are the lights on and the doors unlocked? DON’T GO IN JACK!! And definitely don’t look in the bathroom.

- The repeated shot of the lift door opening, only every time it repeats a bit more is shown – until you realise what’s coming out of the lift…

As you can tell, I am a bit of a fan.

There is something seriously creepy about wandering around deserted big buildings that would normally hold large numbers of people.

I should know, I used to work for a company that installed computer networks in schools, and a lot of our work was done outside term time. Try carrying PC’s and monitors around empty, cold, silent classrooms and corridors all day – with the wind howling outside. *shudder*

Any film with Jack Nicholson in it automatically rules. But The Shining has the advantage of also being one of the very few genuinely creepy films, that continues to give people the wiggins even after they grow up. Most films I found scary as a kid are actually laughable.

"Tarantula". It's what gave me arachnaphobia. Being made to watch it as a three year old by my big brothers...


.....and being told it was all true...!

Red Dawn. and Return of the Living Dead.

Haven’t seen it but the first night of the living dead that got me as a kid. It was brilliant, the black and white adding to the tension.

This i think was a remake, in color. Or maybe a sequel. Dunno. Mainly I remember half of some dead bitch hanging on some poor guy's back wagging her spine like a tail talking about wanting to eat brains cause it hurts to be dead. Freaked me out. I was like 10.

Oh, that and the Philadelphia Experiment - mainly because it's based on a true story. The guys stuck half in/half out of the boat just creeped me out.

Was that the really trippy film where the U.S Navy tried to set up an energy field on a ship to make it invisible to radar, and the ship vanished?

I think there was a lot more plot to it, but I can’t remember the rest.

A brilliant Steven King adaptation that was not let down by the really bad special FX of the spider at the end. I thought it was great that after being freaked out by Tim Carry in make up I got some thing to lath at.

I’ve also go a friend who hates spiders and clowns. Not his favorite movie.

Believe it or not it was The Wizard of Oz. For some reason I wasn't too keen on the Wicked Witch...Its strange to think of that now.

What gave me childhood nightmares was an animated version of the Sherlock Homes story The Hound of the Baskervilles. The dream when a big dog was after you. I had that one.

It's not a film, but did anyone ever read a book called Bless the Child? I read it when I was ten and thought Ghana was COMIN' for me... *shudder*

For me it would have to be Hellraiser.

The Princess Bride scared me when I first saw it. It was the giant rat I was afraid of.
I thought The Dark Crystal was pretty creepy too, but it was still one of my most favourite movies.
Jaws absolutely traumatized me. Only now am I getting over my fear of sharks.

Holy Shit! All these years and I never realized it was his sexy ass in that clown suit!

Probably why I wasn't scared of Pennywise.

For me it was Jurassic Park. For years i had (and on occaision still do) have nightmares about being chased and eaten by giant lizards.

The film that scared me the most was `An American Werewolf in London`.
For a few years after seeing I always thought about it when there was a full moon.

When I was about 6 everyhting was happy & fine until my older sister got an alien film obessesion. I remember having to watch Starship Trooper's (or whatever it's called) & crying because I saw an alien bug thing munching on some guy's legs & sucking his brain out through it's snout. Oh & Vistiors of the Night. That was about some girl who got abducted & aliens took her cells to create an alien/human baby. I was so terrified because the aliens gave the girl a strange mark that looked like a triangle of moles & I have a triangle of moles on my upper right arm. I was convinced they were abducting me whilst I slept & went hysterical before bedtime.

*The Omen [back when I still feared Satan & Hell].

*The Exorcist [rightfully so].

*Suspiria [something about witches & Satanic rituals had me shook back then].

*The Texas Chainsaw Massacre [again, rightfully so].

Seven kept me awake all night once.

The part where the sloth guy moves freaked the shit out of me.

Oddly enough I couldn't bring myself to find them scary at the time (I think the kid from The Omen is adorable & I guess that put me off being scared), but afterwards they did. Especially when I was watching a documentary on all the bad things that happened on the creation of The Omen. That was flipping scary!

What did happen when they were shooting The Omen?

I can't even get myself to watch even one of the 4 Exorcist movies...I've heard that some people FAINTED after watching them, and sometimes I'm the world's greatest wimp... *Blushes until cheeks turn scarlet in color*

Perhaps I’m not easy to scare, but the exorcist did not scare me at all.

It struck me as a really intense film, but frightening? No sale.

On the other side of the scale, when I watched ring for the first time, I didn’t sleep all night.

A friend said that I must watch it, and he gave me the DVD in a blank case (very clever ruse), knowing full well that at the time, I knew nothing about Asian cinema. And he gave me no indication as to the plot of the film. Bastard.

So I went back to flat I rent by myself, had a few glasses of red wine - and then fired the DVD up at 11PM in the evening.

Did you see the cut version of the exorcist, I’ve only seen that one which I didn’t think was any good but i'm told the original un-cut film is much better.

Ring (Japanese one) is excellent.

Me too, except for the First Exorcist. Oh man, I was watching it at my friend's place and it scared me like whoa! The other ones are so lame, just turn the mute button and the signs of horror disappear.

I didn't sleep too the night I watched The Ring. I sat down reading books all night long...
I watched it with my sister who's two years younger than I, and she laughed at me for being scared. As soon as it was over, she just went to her room and slept!!

Some guy got killed on the set of zoo on the day they were filming. A stunt double got the exact injuries that Damien's mother gets in the film. Oh & the guy who thought of the scene where the guy gets his head hacked off, he was driving down some road in Europe when a car hit the side. Anyways the woman in the passenger seat was cut in half & died instantly. He survived but when he looked up he saw a sign that said Route 13 6,66 Omenn.
That's why it's got a reputation for being the film Satan didn't want. *shivers* I wonder if anything went wrong on the re-make that's due out this year? (well apart from the fact the new kid isn't cute, but that's just my opinion)

It's Seamus Davey-Fitzpatrick. He's not as sweet as the original. Typically the film is due to be released on the sixth of June.

I don’t know why Hollywood bothers with remakes – they are not patches on the original.

that would have to be IT, that thing scared the shit outa me! Then my mom saw me watching it, and she yelled at me. I like that movie now!

I don't know why. But I was REALLY scared to watch it.

Also, the taking a poop in the broken toilet scene in Dumb and Dumber, scared me. I hid under the blankets.

I was a very strange little kid. Ask anybody.

Another film that scared me as a kid was Steven Spielberg`s `Jaws`, especially the bit when Richard Dreyfuss`s character finds the body on the capsized boat.

I was fully obsessed with sharks when I was young (and still am now) so the only part in Jaws that frightened me was when the shark died :(.

Other than that I can't really think of any movies that frightened me back then... I was the sort of kid that would beg my mother to "rewind to the part where the guy gets his arm cut off". Ooh, but I DO remember a scene in Hercules: The Legendary Journeys where some minion of Aries is summoning him from a pond of blood surrounded by skulls that scared me a bit.

The Lost Boys scared me.

Especially Kiefer Sutherland
