Just post what to see and what not to see.


I'll start off. Any romance movies out there that are worth seeing. It doesn't have to be new, just good. Horror/suspense works, too.

If you like Asian films and don't mind reading subtitles then I'm going to recommend you watch "A moment to remember", "the way home", "Sad movie", "Reincarnation", and "A tale of two sisters". Korean films rock.

Subtitles are fine. Is the acting good? Does it have any scenes that will make me have an emotional breakdown?

Now I just have to fill up the horror section of my shelf.

Reincarnation and tale of two sisters are horror. And they're pretty good if you're into Japanese horror, even though they're Korean. The other ones are romances and I've cried on all three... Actings pretty good. Not Oscar worthy of course but good. ^_^

Any good suspense movies?

"Lady In the Water" is worthy of being on Mystery Science Theater 3000, if that show was actually still running.

I'm going to see "Why did I Get Married Too" on April 2nd. and "The Last Air Bender", I believe that comes out in July. I'm most definitely going to see "Eclipse" on June 30. A good romance movie is "Dear John", I even cried.

Kung Fu Hustle. Haha, I never thought it was that good. Most especially t'was dubbed spanish.

Try watching it.

Marnie is an amazing romance, this movie simply has no dull moments. Vertigo is also a wonderful romance.

Man, I hated Marnie - interesting concept, but I just felt like the delivery somehow missed the mark. To be honest, I DID find it kinda dull (plus, if that movie is meant to be a romance, I'm missing something). Vertigo is awesome though. Speaking of Hitchcock, OP, if you're looking for horror, Psycho is a classic which definitely lives up to the hype. You could also check out David Lynch (Eraserhead, Mulholland Drive, Blue Velvet - fuck Dune though).

Ah, well we all have our own opinions, I myself found that every moment of Marnie had hold of my attention. Also, I don't mean to say that Marnie is strictly a romance, more like a psychological thriller with elements of romance...so probably not the best suggestion for a romance movie.

Erasure Head fucked with my head like nothing else...i'll never watch it again.

Dark Prince The True Dracula Story.
I just watched it. And it was pretty darn good.

Well, quite - **SPOILERS** if I'm not mistaken, he forced her to marry him against her will, r.aped her, then gradually broke her down using psychoanalytical assertions that she was crazy. That he happened to be somewhat correct about the trauma in her past doesn't take away from the fact that he added to it, and I kind of saw the happy ending as an ironic comment on how much he - and society - gets away with.


I haven't seen the remake, but the original is almost perfect so I can't imagine there was a need for it.

I will admit how sexy Sean Connery was distracted me from the faults of his character lol. I saw the ending much differently, after Marnie finally discovered the secret of her childhood from her mother it just seemed to me like everything between Marnie and Mark was somehow alright then, like they were going to put it all behind them. It didn't seem to me so much that Mark was "getting away" so much as all of the issues were somehow at that point resolved. It was like Marnie coming face to face with the root of her psychological issues somehow wiped the slate clean for both of them.

LoL Wut?
She gets raeped, forced into marriage, and mentally scarred and she forgets about ALL of it?

Dude, no way! You don't cure a woman who has sexual issues springing from childhood trauma by r.aping her. If I thought Hitchcock intended to suggest the guy COULD wipe the slate clean after that (with no actual, lucid repentence on his part, might I add), I'd be goddamn offended. I think the ending's more about how she thinks it'll all be okay now because she's resolved the trauma of the past, but can't see far enough to realize that she's still being dominated, as much as the guy (can't remember his name) claims to love her. The happy ending seems entirely ironic. Throughout the movie, the dude uses psychoanalysis as a tool of repression, not liberation, and she buys it at the end.

Eh, however the meaning of the movie is interpreted I still really enjoyed it.

Hey, fair enough. I prefer Vertigo in terms of thriller-y suspense though.

Anyone seen The Trouble With Harry? I thought that was awesome. Hitchcock is so hit & miss, though.

Seven Pounds

Percepolis. Must be seen in French. The English actors weren't nearly as moving.

Those last two are definitely awesome! I haven't seen the others, but I'll be on the look-out for them now.

Rom-Com's are okay, but I get annoyed with them easily; they all follow basically the same plot:

Two people get crushes on each other through awkward moments. As soon as they start falling in love with each other, there's some terrible misunderstanding that threatens to drive them apart forever. The man [usually, since of course men make all the mistakes, and women don't know how to apologize and forgive in these movies] does something fantastically romantic that the woman finds out about at the last moment, then runs into his arms. They live happily ever after.

Granted, there are a few variations on this, but in general, this seems to be the plot that is followed. Same for "friendship" movies.

I prefer Vertigo over Marnie as well.

Men don't necessarily make all the mistakes, there's a sad number of rom coms where the female tries to be independent and then realizes all she wants in life is the domestic life. My sister loves these movies, can't think of the titles...I think one was Sweet Home Alabama? I usually run from the room when she watches these.

The only two romantic films I liked was Where The Heart Is (pretty much solely for Natalie Portman, and the romance isn't exactly central to the story, maybe its better described as a chick flick than romance) and secretly, very secretly I love Moonstruck. Its probably my biggest guilty pleasure for movies.

Saya: Heh heh. That's true as well. Augh, I hated "Sweet Home Alabama". No one...and I mean NO ONE...who has gotten out of this state, gone to NYC, gotten rich and gotten an awesome, rich fiance would EVER return here!

Seriously, that movie annoys me to no end. Then again, I don't like Matthew Mchaunahey that much.

Moonstruck was pretty awesome, I have to admit as well. I found the first half of "How to lose a guy in 10 days" quite amusing, but the second half was far less awesome. I dunno; maybe I need genuinely crazy people in my rom-coms. lol

I loved Spirited Away, but I could live the rest of my life without encountering Grave again. Just far too sad and depressing for my taste.

Ponyo was pretty awesome, though. Tina Fey does the English voice for the mom.

If we're talking anime movies, I honestly like Satoshi Kon movies more than Miyazaki, especially Perfect Blue and Millennium Actress.

Tales From Earthsea is pretty good too, was directed by Miyazaki's son Goro. I heard that they weren't talking while he was working on this because Miyazaki didn't approve. I didn't enjoy the Earthsea books but I thought the movie was pretty good.

Perfect blue was really good...really scary too. It took me a few watches to get the ending though.

To the best of my knowledge they all have subtitles, hope that's not a deal breaker. They are my top 6 most favorite foreign films of all time. Another good one is "The Experiment"... it is pretty brutal.. I only watched it once.. with one eye closed.

Ok I have a few recommendations as well. These are kind of odd movies.
Perfume: The Story of a Murderer- One of my all time favorites. Very unique story here. It's about a boy who is born with a profound sense of smell, who ends up killing women to make the best perfume.
Harold and Maude- Cute and interesting movie. It's hard to describe the plot besides it's almost kind of a romance between a young man and an old woman... It's a nice movie and it's full of fake suicides. :)
Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter- Funny B-movie. Eh. If you like b-movies you can try it. Jesus saves lesbians and teams up with a masked wrestler. :P

Probably one of the greatest movies I have ever seen, and easily the best Anime movie I've seen. It currently sits on my DVD shelf, shrink-wrapped and unwatched. While it is a landmark in animated storytelling, it is a devastating movie. Known as one of the greatest anti-war movies ever made, be warned: while I absolutely HAD to buy it, I still haven't had the nerve to watch it again.

Live Freaky! Die Freaky!

KIDS is a pretty good movie. Its an indie flick from 1995

The Big Sleep and The Maltese Falcon are probably the two best movies I have ever seen.

If you want something more modern try Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, one of the few neo-noirs that don't make me wretch. Blade Runner is awesome, too.

EDIT: I'd also like to add my namesake, Kiss Me Deadly, another noir-classic, though this one has a lack of Humphry Bogart

I am a tough sell when it comes to romantic comedies, and I truly don't believe they make them as good as when Tracy and Hepburn were starring in such classics as "Adam's Rib" or "Woman of the Year." Still, here's a short list of a few that won me over and I would highly recommend to any of my friends ... even "the guys":

Heaven Can Wait (the original with Warren Beatty)
50 First Dates
The Truth about Cats & Dogs (with Janeane Garofalo in a very winning performance)

Very honorable mention: Roxanne - Steve Martin wrote the screenplay giving a modern update of the story Cyrano de Bergerac. His script and his performance are a wonder. It has been rightly hailed as "a comic masterpiece" and I never tire of seeing it.

In other movie recommendations, my favorite movie of all time is the original 12 Angry Men. It's a hard sell to my younger friends as it is in black & white and the "action" all takes place in a single room, but the compelling, thoughtful discussion on racism, justice and the qualities of temperance and mercy make it a film worthy of your patience and your time.

And for an under-appreciated jewel, I like to suggest Blood Simple by the Cohen brothers. Well before they ever thought about making The Big Lebowski or Fargo, they crafted this black comedic drama with so many signature moments of miscommunication and unexpected consequences that new appreciation dawns on me each time I watch it.

2001: A Space Odyssey. Everybody should see this movie.

...Science of Sleep is pretty good, too. Weird, but good.

That movie was directed by Michel Gondry, and happens to have been his first project following the release of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Thanks for mentioning this one; I had meant to see it when it came out, missed it, then forgot all about it.

The original movie was so much better.

I knew that movie (Clash of the Titans) sucked when I saw my friend reading the book.

On a related note:
The Percy Jackson movie wasn't good and, I know it's a little late, DragonBall Evolution sucked ass.

The Man With No Name trilogy is awesome and it breaks my heart when people refuse to watch it because they're westerns.

Oh, and I gotta recommend The Room. Its so bad it changed my life.
