Aye, I know, I had limited resources :P I have often thought about adding more to it, but I haven't gotten around to doing it.

Leave it to me to hit my quota for played-out quips just when '*facepalm*' emerges as the only practical retort.

What truly annoys me is the lack of proper The Phantom of the Opera masks really. I bought one once. It was a thin piece of plastic that I eventually had to take off because it was gnawing on my forehead.
Other than that, it was a demi mask but with a full yet very small nose.

Kalitrima 04-14-2010 02:39 AM

Korinna, that mask is absolutely gorgeous. I love the colors. Annnnd now I want one.

I only have two masks, actually. Neither of which I made. One is a Guy Fawkes mask (don't ask), and the other is a fugly Freddy Krueger mask that came with the glove I wanted. Because I couldn't get my hands on supplies for a metal one. Argh. It'd just be nice to have as a sort of collectible, yanno? Anyway, I need to get some better masks. Of course, every time I've looked for cool cheap ones online, the shipping is insane. Go figure.

Ben Lahnger 04-14-2010 05:29 AM

Okay, at this point picking on Anarasha should just be outlawed, because no matter what you say he always replies with something like, "I know. It's sad, isn't it. I'll try to do better." And that just ends up being depressing.

Also, shouldn't this thread be in the FASHION forum?

Yes but since we have no mods and admin is a ghost, the chances of it being moved are low.

On the other foot, this guy makes amazing masks from paper. Really delicate and beautiful work.

Kalitrima 04-14-2010 11:12 AM

That's insane. And amazing. Holy frick. I wonder how he does it, in terms of planning. . .

Ben Lahnger 04-14-2010 11:31 AM

Yes, on the other gothic website where I serve as a mod, I'd be able to move it very easily. But site maintenance in general isn't a priority for management here.

On what gothic website are you mod?

So, the ball has been post phoned and I'm pretty determined to win the contest for best mask, is there any good tutorials online for making masquerade masks? I got a lot of time to work on it, I don't really want to just slap some sequins on cardboard and call it a mask.

Kalitrima 04-14-2010 12:27 PM

A long time ago, I found a tutorial for making leather masks. It's on deviantART, I think. I'll be at Lane in about an hour, where my internet will stop cutting out, so I'll try and find it then. I actually realized I have an old old OLD paper mache mask from, like, fifth grade. Maybe you could try doing that on the upper part of your face, then trim it as desired? The texture leaves something to be desired, but it's cheap, and easy to paint.

honeythorn 04-14-2010 12:28 PM

Get a good blank base I'd say. Here's an Ebay link to some.

Saya 04-14-2010 12:58 PM

I was hoping to do something very different so I don't really want to go with a base, although if I fail there's a craft store here that sells them. I think I can make a base easily enough actually, I've done masks before with papier mache, just not half masks and I'm thinking I might make a butterfly mask so I don't know how well its going to go.

Actually, this wasn't meant as withdrawing from anything, I honestly did think about redoing the mask :P
As for any other time, I just won't bother with the arguments these days, they don't amuse me anymore.

Sounds like a little bit of wisdom to me.

Anarasha 04-14-2010 11:46 PM

I suppose I grew up or something like that o.o

vindicatedxjin 04-15-2010 09:39 AM

I know this is kinda off the subject but I have a scary story that's circulated in Japan and Korean about a lady with a mask.

The story goes like this...A Korean woman had plastic surgery in Japan, But during the procedure, something went horribly wrong apparently and she was left with a grotesquely scarred face. The edges of her mouth were cut all the way up to her cheek bones making her face resemble a "psycho-smile." I guess kinda like jokers....Well she started wearing a red mask. Horribly disfigured she became determined to take out her anger on people, children especially. Rumor has it that if you live on the first floor of an apartment building or go into dark alleys she may find you... she's supposed to ask you a question. "Am I pretty?"

If you say that she is pretty, she'll call you a liar, and cut your face to be just like hers. If you say she's ugly, she'll be insulted and cut the left side of your mouth... basically you should be scared because it's a lose/lose situation.

Anarasha 04-15-2010 09:57 AM

I love stories like that.
They are proper frightening unlike a lot of the "scary stories" passed around where I live.

Kalitrima 04-15-2010 10:01 AM

Oh, hey, if you want freaky masks, just look at a lot of older Japanese stories. Fatal Frame is pretty much a good example of a collection of stories like that. The blinding mask. . . euuuugh. -Shudder-

vindicatedxjin 04-15-2010 10:15 AM

I have several if you guys are interested in hearing about them!:)

vindicatedxjin 04-15-2010 10:24 AM

There was apparently this man who went to a hotel in Korea for a business trip or something. When the lady at the desk gave him his key, she told him that on the way to his room, there was a door with no number that was locked and no one was allowed inside. She also said that no one should look inside the room, under any circumstances...whatsoever. So he followed the instructions, going straight to his room, and going to bed.
The next night he began to get a bit curious. He walked to the door and tried the handle. Obviously it was locked. He bent down and looked through the wide keyhole. All he saw was a hotel bedroom, like his, and in the corner was a woman with white skin. He could only see her back, because she was leaning her face against the wall, facing away from the door. He got kinda freaked out and went back to his room.
The next day, he returned to the door and looked through the keyhole one last time. But all he saw was redness. He couldn’t make anything out besides a distinct red color, unmoving. He thought that perhaps someone saw that he was spying the night before, and had blocked the keyhole with something red.

At this point he decided to consult the woman at the front desk for more information. She asked if he looked through the keyhole...and told him that a long time ago, a man murdered his wife in that room, and her ghost haunted it. And that they were white all over, except for their eyes, which were red.

Anarasha 04-15-2010 11:21 AM

Jin, that sent chills down my spine. Oh my goat.

vindicatedxjin 04-15-2010 01:25 PM

I knows a bunch of em. Obviously most of them are EXTREMELY exaggerated or completely fictional. But I love them none the less. Here's a few more.

There is this one story that is based on a true serial killer in Korea...

There was a girl who lived on the 14th floor of an apartment, which was the top floor. One night she was going home in the elevator and a man stepped in with her. He began making small talk with her... saying that he had just moved in and lived on the 13th floor. She remarked about how that must have been why she never saw him before, and told him that she lived on the floor above him. When the elevator arrived on the 13th floor he stepped out and the door closed behind him, but he turned around and smiled through the door window, pulling out a knife from his jacket. He quickly ran up the stairs to the 14th floor and when the girl got there she got stabbed to death.

vindicatedxjin 04-15-2010 01:30 PM

There was a young girl that was walking home from school, and she found a small pile of Polaroid photos lying in the gutter... There were twenty in all... neatly wrapped with a rubber band. She picked them up, and as she walked she started to browse through them. The first photo was of a ghostly white man on a black background... standing just far enough away from the camera that she couldn’t make out his features. She slid the photo to the back of the stack and looked at the next one... The photo was of the same man now standing a bit closer. She flipped through the next several photos quickly. With each one the man in the picture came a bit closer and his features were a bit clearer. Turning the last corner to her house... the girl noticed that the man in the photos seems to be looking at her even when she moved the stack from side to side. She kept flipping them over, one by one. By the nineteenth picture, the man was so close his face completely filled the frame. It had a horrible expression on his face... walking up the driveway, she turned to the last photo. This time, instead of an image, there were two words: “Close enough.” Hearing a scream, her brother rushed to the door and opened it. All he saw was a pile of photographs lying on the doorstep. The top one looked like an extremely pale version of his sister, but she was standing too far back for him to be sure.

Anarasha 04-15-2010 01:40 PM

That last one didn't do it for me to be honest. It's just like the western news broadcasts o.o

Edit: I meant the elevator one :p

vindicatedxjin 04-15-2010 01:41 PM

Lol... It's really fake obviously, I like the concept though :)

Anarasha 04-15-2010 01:49 PM

The photograph one was awesome.

vindicatedxjin 04-15-2010 01:49 PM

Lol oh!!! ;)

Anarasha 04-15-2010 11:31 PM

Feel free to share if you have more :)

Here's mine...

I got it from my friend last yr. after she got back from a week in New Orleans.

Anarasha 04-16-2010 01:11 AM

Oh my goat, that is beautiful.

The Divine Ms. M 04-16-2010 01:26 AM

Why thankee I'm rather fond of it myself hehehe;) Oh I've been reading those stories...man, how is it Asians have the best horror tales?

Anarasha 04-16-2010 01:33 AM

The one with the hotel sent ice cold chills down my spine.

vindicatedxjin 04-16-2010 06:12 AM

Lol I don't think that it's really that Asians have the "best" horror tales. It's merely because it's a different 'kind' of horror.

Anarasha 04-16-2010 02:32 PM

Western horror is more like gore.

vindicatedxjin 04-16-2010 02:34 PM

Yah pretty much....

Anarasha 04-16-2010 02:34 PM

Does nothing for me tbh.

vindicatedxjin 04-16-2010 02:44 PM

It all depends on what it is really. When it comes to films, I get really freaked out by Rob zombies chainsaw movies and paranormal activity. Thing about Asian films is that they linger with you longer.

Anarasha 04-16-2010 02:46 PM

Indeed. I never actually WATCH horror though, they give me nightmares.

vindicatedxjin 04-16-2010 02:51 PM

Lol what the heck?

Anarasha 04-16-2010 03:01 PM

Didn't have me figured as that kinda guy, eh?

vindicatedxjin 04-16-2010 10:44 PM

lol nope not at all.
