Visual Kei

What do you think of Visual Kei fashion?

ThenAgain 07-25-2010 07:28 PM

When done right it's pretty bloody hilarious. I approve of it in the same way I approve of any garish or interesting fashion, as long as it does not stagnate.

LenorePoe 07-25-2010 07:30 PM

When done right, its quite pretty.

Tam Li Hua 07-25-2010 08:59 PM

^ I agree, but I can also see how it isn't for everyone. Also, it looks very strange when anyone who isn't Asian tries to imitate it, IMHO.

LenorePoe 07-25-2010 09:03 PM

I will agree with that; Visual Kei goes with asian features... anyone else the nose is too big, the lips wrong, eyes wrong, etc. You have to have sort of an impish or young looking face to pull it off.

lady_cthulhu 07-26-2010 08:43 AM

Oh! And the right texture of hair - the hairstyles just don't work on fine hair (like mine, le sigh). I do like the look though, it's very dramatic.

Hearts_Purple 07-26-2010 12:04 PM

I think the fashion sucks as bad as the music. I'm not trying to troll the thread that's just my honest take on it. I collect some dolls from Japan and just about everyone on those type of boards is either a Visual Kei or Yaoi fangirl from America.

The bands are basically the Madonnas/Lady Gagas of Japan.

HATE!

Have you ever heard Dir En Grey? Listen to Embryo, Obscure, Glass Skin, etc... amazing stuff.

My hair is thin and strait, works pretty well for me. The trick is hair gel.

ThenAgain 07-26-2010 04:06 PM

Oh yeah, the music is usually pretty generic and terrible but I can always get behind big hair and androgyny.

I agree with the music being generic and terrible. The fashion is just as bad.

I'll admit, I'm not a huge fan of the music either. But I could stare at pics of it all day! =D

It's cool if it isn't your thing.

Ooh! You'll have to share some tips some time, my hair is Epic Fail when it comes to styling.

KontanKarite 07-27-2010 12:42 PM

It's pop materialism without the mainstream money. Unless we are talking about Japan in particular, then it's really just pop shit.

So far I haven't done anything too drastic.
I have very long black hair, and yesterday I cut my bangs so they were jagged and would hang around my face.

All you need is hair spray and a rat tail comb. Tease the living hell out of yur hair and spary the fuck out of it! If you try it on clean hair it's gonna fall right out, though.

lady_cthulhu 07-29-2010 07:07 AM

^Thanks! I will definitely experiment with that.

LenorePoe 07-29-2010 11:35 AM

Scene hair is very similar to Visual Kei, too.

LenorePoe 07-29-2010 12:02 PM

just google "Visual Kei tutorial" or look them up on Youtube... there's so many.

HavelockV 08-19-2010 09:11 AM

I've long thought the whole visual kei style fascinating, even if the music is nothing that I've been able to develop an appreciation for. It appears to me to be the melding of operatic opulence and goth edginess. Unsurprisingly, I generally prefer the more historically-inspired costumes.

The idea of attempting the look for Halloween or some other event has occurred to me, what with being Asian and a costumer. However, I tend to aviod utilizing excessive amounts of hair product and makeup, both of which seem to be requisite here. Regardless, perhaps I shall try it someday.

ssj_goku 08-19-2010 02:02 PM

wtf all look like f-inretards

Pineapple_Juice 08-19-2010 07:43 PM

Preach it, son.

Raza 09-21-2010 01:35 PM

It can be very pretty, although I often think it could use a bit more edge, which other than genderbending it tends to lack. Great when combined with goth, guro or similar influences.

Difficult to do right, though.

madame goth 10-05-2010 02:19 PM

Visual kei is awesome ! I love gothic visual kei with a top hat :)

LovLeyDarK 10-08-2010 01:18 PM

I adore Visual Kei ^w^ But it's not my style. I wish I could pull it off, though.

synthysys 10-08-2010 06:00 PM

I don't know if you can still call them 'visual kei', but I saw Dir en Grey on tour with Apocolyptica a few weeks ago, and they were pretty good. It was closer to metalcore than it was to some of the pop-y visual kei I've heard in the past.

Oh, and if they count, I like Schwein (it was a project between KMFDM, Pig, and Buck-Tick). Some of Buck-Tick's stuff on SSS was good too I think.

synthysys 10-08-2010 06:31 PM

Oh, and I should mention that Raymond Watts had another Japanese side project, Schaft:

Admittedly, I like Scissor Sisters better.

I agree. I really love the androgyny and the theatrics of it all. The over the top bands like Malice Mizer are fun to look at.

Pica 10-30-2010 04:21 PM

Visual kei is awesome^^ i wanted to try it out with the hair and eyes. I'm just wary of cutting my hair haha

Mandarinz 11-06-2010 12:16 AM

LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT

And you can do the style if you're not Asian, it just depends on how you do it. You can't be as OTT, but then you notice that when the bands aren't on stage/filming videos/in photoshots, they all look really casual, but with awesome hair and accesories. It's kinda just another form of dress up.

Oh yeah, did I mention I LOVE IT?!

Boris_The_Fop 11-12-2010 12:00 PM

I like Visual Kei!! It reminds me a lot of the 80's glam bands that my dad and I listen to.
