Gothic.net Upgrades You Would Like?

There have been a lot of new features added to Gothic.net in the past year, but more is always nice. What additional features would you like to see added to the site? Feel free to ask for anything you can think of, no matter how over-the-top your wish is. Gothic.net is going to try to make as many of those crazy wishes come true as possible. Chat was one thing folks mentioned and ways are being explored to have it without it being a spammer and troll haven. But what else would everybody like? Your opinions are needed to make it the best it can be. Thanks much!

tenet_2012 04-27-2006 01:46 AM

My only problem with Gnet are the trolls. But you have no control over that, short from preventing new members to join. Who wants that? Some of the new people are tits (had to fit my word of the day in).

I think you guys run an awesome forum and delete the trolls as soon as you can.

By the way, I love the "New Posts" button.

Niels 04-27-2006 04:53 AM

Well maybe you could consider a seperated religion/philosophy forum, because now those topics are somewhat sprayed all over the place...

Circle V 04-27-2006 06:30 PM

I concur with Niels.

Godslayer Jillian 04-27-2006 07:02 PM

Maybe change the description of the Whining Thread.
The "Please post all suicide threats, complaints about significant others, and statements about how unfair school is to this board." sounds too much as Teen Angst for me.

Solumina 04-27-2006 07:25 PM

and there ends up being a lot of teen angst threads

Draconysius 04-27-2006 07:53 PM

I think there should be a short-stories thread stickied in the literature section. Maybe also there could be a "currently listening" field in the reply box? It would be unecessary, but it would enable everyone to post their musical tastes much more often without having to visit a different thread. Yes, we're that lazy. ;)

Deviant Kitten 04-27-2006 09:59 PM

I have to agree with Tenet (and by the way your avi is unbelievably cute!) that G.net is perfect apart from the trolls. But they're just something we have to put up with and ignore as best we can, I suppose. Unless you could screen the applications for membership somehow? I don't want to get all nazi on the newbies, but if they had to fill out a (very short) form which had to be approved by a mod before they could join it might stop "black ops" type invasions!

Other than the trolls, this place is beautiful! :)

Blushing Heliophobe 04-27-2006 11:04 PM

Maybe we could have a waiting period between when you register and you are mailed your password. That way the new users can be reviewed and if they have a name like "XXXfaghaterXXXX" then it would be a lot simpler to keep them from joining/posting.

But that may be too time intensive, I dunno. It'd be nice though.

It was still there when I joined. I've a feeling that some people skip straight past it though...

I still think it would be good if new members had to be accepted by a mod before they could post, so as to stop the banned ones from bouncing straight back under a new name! I don't know much about IP addresses; could they be used to check whether a troll was returning ('reject' for example)?

Edit: I know it sounds time-consuming to check new members, but it would save our poor mods from having to continually delete offensive posts and ban the same trolls over and over!

^^ Banned4Life.

I'd really love a philosophy area as well, so that my intellectual urine gets sprayed in a more confined space. Less slosh-factor, more astringent and concentrated for those pesky rusty bumpers...

WolfMoon 04-29-2006 07:59 AM

I miss the olde feature we had of the last 5 topics that were replied to scrolling by. Chat would be a nice feature. Maybe something like IRC?

I also like the idea oif being able to check for banned ip's before letting new members join. It would save a lot of hassle in the long run.

edible_eye 04-29-2006 05:25 PM

- sigh -

deviant's and blushing's avatars are the reason men relish their eyes. wolfmoon as well, of course - but she already knows that.

just stopping in to say "hi".

i don't have an upgrade suggestion - but does anyone know how to submit short stories - yes, i'm still a mod but for the life of me, i don't know the rules / details. i have a few i'd like to take a shot on.

Corpus_Draconis 04-29-2006 05:36 PM

I have a short story that I'd be interested in rewriting and trying to submit...

I do like the idea of a philosophy/religion thread. I think I would spend quite some time in there...

maggot 04-29-2006 09:21 PM

A "smartness bar." This will go down when people say stupid things like "O RLY?!" and is replenished over time.

Demonista_Ravenesque 04-29-2006 10:49 PM

I love the idea of a smartness bar!

Well, please please please please put in a roleplay forum!

Those things are so great they make my bladder weak!

Oooooh, yeah. I almost forgot about that. That actually was a VERY convenient feature. I'll second that!

As for mine, I'm probably beatting a dead horse here, but what about doing away with the time limits on editing posts? I mean, I've gotten used to proof reading my posts 3 times over before I post anymore, but still I come across a word that's misspelled or in the wrong place and I have that compulsory need to go back and fix it.

maggot 04-30-2006 09:12 AM

Roleplay forums are fun, although you need to obsessively check back on them.

Godslayer Jillian 04-30-2006 11:32 AM

What's a roleplay forum?

Magpie_Tendencies 04-30-2006 11:14 PM

Roleplay forums are where people take on the persona of a fictional character and start a story. They post say, a paragraph and then someone else comes along and adds their character/s to the story.

Ahhh... I rarely visit the front page. Thanks for pointing that out, X. I'll have to check it out more often. :P

WizardElement5 05-01-2006 04:19 PM

Hi. First of all, thanks for gnet!

The most obvious thing that's missing is a board for creative writing. I love the idea of one person writing something, (say, a maximum of ten lines), and then another person continuing with it for their ten lines. You'd have to have a rule that you couldn't do another post until at least ten others had posted after your previous effort. I bet the stories created on such a board could be made into books and sold! You'd have to have a statement of some sort that said "anyone posting here agrees to their work being included in any future publication etc."

Thanks once again,
Wizard.

Er... I just set one of those up on a site. It fell apart, though, due to lack of members to run it.

I'd be willing to start one up here. They're insanely interesting, once you get them started.

A Simple Poet 05-01-2006 07:44 PM

I would like personal threads, I know it seems conceited, but I think it is a way for an individual's identity to shine through, and the strongest would survive. That, or maybe we can augment our Intro threads into personal threads instead of mere salutations.

A Simple Poet 05-01-2006 07:52 PM

I tried, I suppose I am just too droll to read. That, or I let everyone down by shelving my Gothic Space Opera idea ... my "bad".

Godslayer Jillian 05-02-2006 08:09 PM

I have a question. Where did my philosophy thread go?

GeishaGirl 05-02-2006 10:53 PM

How about a users gallery? I've seen plenty of other sites that had a seperate area from the board where the members could load pictures of themselves. One place I go has it set up so that the members can use it.

Limit two or three pictures per person, that way, we can have a place that everyone can look to see what people look like.

Solumina 05-03-2006 03:03 PM

I like geisha's idea

Mistress-Liriel 05-03-2006 03:17 PM

Another forum I frequent uses this same forum software, and has a section for members that is private. You can only obtain entry by having 500 posts under your belt, or by paying a fee AND being known by the mods as not being a tool. It is actually quite handy if you have subjects you would like to keep troll free. Maybe this is a feature that can be implemented with a Chat as well? I also agree that Chat would be nice.

Individual section for religion and spirituality - wonderful idea. Everywhere I go, I am suddenly besieged by some religious hot button, no matter what the original topic was. ;)

Metatron 05-03-2006 03:44 PM

I think I'd like to see the people behind Gnet post on the boards once in a while...just to get to know you better. It definitely makes a site more enjoyable if you can actually talk with the creator(s) on a more personal level.

Sanctus Dei 05-09-2006 01:51 PM

Could we get a better selection in the vending machines? I'm alittle tired of apples and tunafish.

Oh and I third the above request.

emeraldlonewoulf 05-10-2006 11:15 AM

First and foremost, thanks a million for your hard work and extra effort to make this place and interesting and engaging escape for all of us. I am sure you all spend a large portion of your time to set up and maintain it all.
Having said that, I am going to be greedy and ask for more. :)

A visual arts gallery would be wonderful, especially if it was in its' own section, perhaps a place where we could have threads about different members techniques and discussions of completed works.

I realize that all the poetry is in one list because you were probably drowned in it previously, but it would be really cool if we could set up a place to post it for return comment where it wouldn't be lost in the abyss. Also something similar for short stories would be awesome. maybe a kind of forum within a forum? That way it couldn't take over the literature section?

A religion/ philosophy section would also be awesome, seing as those subjects seem to be scattered through several areas.

Maybe a maths/ science discussion area, not that it really gets much consideration here, I think it would be fun.

Again, thankyou for all your time and effort.

emeraldlonewoulf 05-10-2006 11:17 AM

And, hell yes, we would love to hear from you guys more, if you have time between working on this place and rolling on the floor with laughter at some of our goofy rantings.

angel_dark_demon_bright 05-10-2006 11:30 AM

To keep so many trolls from joining, how about a feature that forces them to get approval from a mod or other members. Or better yet, two. Maybe have that along with a waiting period of a day or so. But that may be a little too much to put on them. I dont know it was an idea.

I love the "New Posts" button. I cant live without it now.

bjork_freak 05-13-2006 01:06 PM

I was reading about Myspace on Wikipedia, and it stated that Myspace doesn't let new users post on the message boards for seven days after registering. Somehow it is supposed to stop spamming. Maybe something like this will help stop all the useless spamming on these boards?

Ben Lahnger 05-13-2006 02:15 PM

I'm disappointed that no new literature has appeared in this "Bone Chilling Literary Culture" the whole time I've been here. Apparently, submissions have not been accepted since some time ago ... when the new owner(s) took over? It makes one wonder if this has just become a cash cow for advertising revenue, or if the current ownership just can't or won't get into the literarature business.

The trollery has been allowed to proceed withour adequate redress by ownership. There are steps that can and should be taken when hate speech, death threats or child pornography are posted by people wishing harm to these forums. Not only have the admins been silent on occasions when they should have acted, but they've left their moderators overwhelmed and unable to act with any authority to ban people who do illegal things. The process here is broken, and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to fix it.

The chat room idea is a good one, and I am all in favor of the delay from sign-up till first post. I waited a week and read heavily before posting my first reply.

I waited until I was over 250 posts before I started a thread. I think that some kind of limit like that would be great. How about this ... as a new member, you can post exactly one new thread - your introduction - until you've posted 200 replies. That would keep trolls from starting new threads, because every time they claimed a new name, they'd have to post 200 replies before they could start a thread (except an introduction).

And finally, I want to say that this IS a good place to gather and talk with like minded people. But as with any clubhouse or social group, it's the people and not the setting that make a place a success or not. I would suggest to all the members, moderators and admins that they keep that in mind.

AbelTheLiar 05-16-2006 01:34 AM

Ok, I'll go ahead and give this thread a big, black kiss. This may seem a tad minor, but a bigger avatar?

Magpie_Tendencies 05-16-2006 02:29 AM

The problem with big avatars is that everyone puts in these massive pictures that end up becoming the focal point of the post rather than what they are typing. I've been on other sites where the avatars are really big and it makes it very difficult to read.

end.of.eternity 05-16-2006 04:16 AM

Hmm. There's nothing unmentioned that I could point out. When I was walking to school one day I had a fantastic idea for this site, it was something major, but I forgot it and now have absolutely no idea what it was.
I confess.

WolfMoon 05-16-2006 08:38 AM

I'd like to exchange this Orange for a Banana.

Benny, you fawking RAWK!

Thank you, that is all.

Morrigan_Dubh 05-16-2006 08:54 AM

Is it possible to have a structure where subthreads can be started inside already established threads?

For example - I am interested in getting/giving tips and anecdotes regarding a specific type of stress/anxiety (i.e. PMS), and we already have an anxiety/depression tips thread in the whining forum, so I don't think there is a need to start a new thread. So a PMS subthread within the anxiety/depression thread would be perfect for that.

I think this kind of hierarchical posting would be very neat and tidy, and would suit our pedantic minds ;)

I also believe the mods need to be given more power to help quell the troll invasion.

Thanks.

PS Can I have a purple? Purple's a fruit.
