Cover Songs
Cover songs what do you think??? should they be encouraged or stopped??? its something that occasionally pops up especially when some god awful shite boy band cover a song ( its an easy win music made by morons for morons). i use to feel that cover songs never capture the magic and the spirt of the original however three tunes ahve changed my mind and now my opinion of cover songs has become all hazy!!! the three of which i speak are:
Personal Jesus by Marilyn Manson ( dont like DM anyway!) The Evil that Men Do by After Forever ( love both!!!!) Hurt by Jonny Cash .............weep buckets!!!!!! What you think!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
Proper English skills are essential when speaking, especially when you expect some sort of reply.
Just a tip. Now back to the subject, what do I think of cover songs? They're quite fine if you think you can "match up" with the original artist's version. There's so sense in covering something if you know its not as good as the original. If an artist covers too many songs, they put off an "I'm broke and I'm too lazy to write my own music," type thing. Here are some covers that made me want to gag: Korn- Pink Floyd's the Wall Deftones- Duran Duran's the Chauffeur Marilyn Manson- Depeche Mode's Personal Jesus 311- The Cure's Love Song Shinedown- Lynyrd Skynyrd's Simple Man |

and Voila. =] Don't forget of the horrid version of Cry that Cradle of Filth covered originaly by Sisters of Mercy. ::shudder:: http://www.cradleoffilth.com/cof/audio/cry.mp3 |
Within Temptation did a bad ass cover of 'Running Up That Hill'. I think it's one of the best out of all their songs. Though I do enjoy Kate's version.
|
Placebo played a great version of "Running Up That Hill" as well. It's pretty much just a bloody good song to begin with.
AFI's cover of the Cure's "Hanging Garden" is what first got me into gothic rock. Therefore I'm of the rather biased opinion that all of AFI's covers are fucking amazing, especially the recent "Jack the Ripper" (originally by Morrissey). Also, Bauhaus' cover of "Severance" by Dead Can Dance. I'm more fond of the original, but just the whole idea of Bauhaus covering a Dead Can Dance song is irresistible. |

Y'know I heard that 'Theatres Des Vampires' (OTT female fronted gothic/metal italian band) did a cover of Kylie Minogue's 'Can't Get You Out Of My Head' but renamed it 'Can't Get You Out Of My Grave'. They recorded it for their 'Suicide Vampire' album. However they weren't allowed to use it, but some lucky people have managed to hear it....I bet it's damn good. |
I'm usually not a big fan of cover songs but two I really liked were Lacrimosa's 'Phantom Of the Opera' cover and when Voltaire covered The Cure's 'Lovesong'
|
Wow, I didn't know Voltaire covered `Lovesong`. ^.^ I wanna hear.
|
It's on his 'Then and Again' album. He did a good cover of it, i hate bad covers of good songs so this works for me. :p
|
I tend not to listen to covers that often. Why? Because it's usually the same song, and not something I'm perticularily interested in. If I want to hear the song, why not just listen to the original?
But, there have been some good covers. My personal favorite was by Mushroomhead, a cover of the Seal song, "Crazy". It just seems cool, and sounds a bit different then the original. |
I think only some bands should do covers, Nasum did a great Napalm Death and Carcass cover.
|
i have a list of covers that arent half bad... :) sometimes they are acceptable...
|
Children of Bodom's cover of Oops I Did It Again just made me fall to the floor in hysterics...
|
yeah...that one was pretty funny...my sides hurt everytime i heard it!
inflames did a wicked cover of "everything counts" by Depeche mode that didnt suck... |
Alkaline Trio's cover of Lucretia my reflection by Sister os Mercy is actually pretty dang good. Heh. =]
|
i personally love cover songs.. it's only if you're going to actually be good when you do it.. now cover bands is just another story... if you're going to be in a band, MAKE YOUR OWN GOD DAMN MUSIC!! like my band for example.. we play a few cover songs and write a lot of our own... but its sad when you have to use another bands material for your own.. oh well that's my take of this...
|
Channel-surfing, I ran into some reality TV show called Rock Star Supernova. There was this really pretty girl on it (Dilana), so I decided to keep watching it. I loved her voice... But her cover of I Want You To Want Me by Cheap Trick was terrible.
|
I think that if the band covering the original song has an understanding of the original band, it should turn out pretty well. Here are a few of my favorite cover songs:
Bauhaus-Ziggy Stardust (David Bowie) Christian Death-Panic In Detroit (David Bowie Christrian Death-Venus In Furs (Velvet Underground) Lacrimosa-the Phantom of the Opera Ex Voto-Riders on the Storm By the way, if "Cry (Little Sister)" is what you were talking about, Slap Your Love, it was NOT by the Sisters of Mercy. I forget who it was by, but certainly not them. |
i went to a gig a little while ago where the bands JUST played cover songs...it was great to hear a punk and HXC take on some crappy radio turds
|
I agree that it all comes down to how a cover song is done. If they are simply trying to recreate the origional song, I see no real point to it. However, if a musician is trying to do their own interpretation of the song, as long as they do it tastefully and within reason, then it may have some merit. Some of my personal favorites include: 'The Metro' - Bella Morte, 'Halo' - James D. Stark, 'Obsession' - The Azoic (mainly because I never expected to hear that song covered), 'Fatal Beating' - Hybrid, '(Seasons) Don't Fear the Reaper' - Liquifaction. Occasionally I come across a cover that just leaves me in a state of confusion, I want to laugh, but at the same time, I'm too dumbfounded to know what to do, such as when Epsilon Minus covered 'lowrider'.
|
I've never heard to original, but Lacuna Coil's 'Stars' was pretty damn good.
I also like Kate Bush's take on 'Rocket Man'. |
o.O who's Kate Bush?
|
*gasps* You've never heard of Kate Bush? She's been around since the late 1970's!
She's not gothic, but she has held a great influence over singers such as Liv Kristine from Leaves Eyes & Sharon Den Adel from Within Temptation; groups from the surge of female fronted gothic metal. I'm not sure whether she'd be your cup of tea though, Persephone (from what I assume your tastes are). Her lyrics are usually very narrative & her vocals can be soft & delicate or shocking & screechy. I was brought up listening to her & have only recently began listening to her stuff on my own accord. Thus ends my tutorial on Kate Bush. :D |
I absolutly LOVE Bauhaus' cover of "Rosegarden Funeral of Sores".

Some covers are cool especially when they take a real old song and update it to a more modern feel. Of course the original song has to be good to begin with. I particularly like a cover of my all time favorite Death in June song "Fall apart" wich was done to a four on the floor dance beat if anyone knows who does it I would like to know so I can get it.
|
I like to hear cover songs when they're done in a different style. Snake River Conspiracy does a very interesting version of The Cure's Love Song, I love Siouxsie and the Banshee's version of "Dear Prudence", and Rasputina has an album of great cover songs.
|
Covers are okay, in my opinion, if they make it their own. For instance, Metallica put out their album of covers,"Garage Inc." In the album, they made all the songs their own, therefore being just covers.
On the other hand, if a band just copies it exactly, the cover was pointless, and should have been ended. |
Tool-Love song (the cure)
|
I like covers most of the time
My favorite covers are I Put a Spell on you by Marilyn Manson Head Like a Hole (NIN) by AFI No Time To Cry (SOS) by Cradle of Filth White Wedding (??) by Murderdolls Dead Souls (Joy Division) by Nine Inch Nails Right Here in my Arms (HIM) by Dope Stars Inc Sin (NIN) by Razed in Black Eleanor Rigby (Beatles) by Godhead Sally's Song by Fiona Apple I can't Take My Eye's Off of you (??) by Muse Creep (Radiohead) by Muse No Quarter (Led Zeppelin) by Tool |

Head Like a Hole (NIN) by AFI was a terrible cover.
|
I tend to hate most covers (especially of oldies/classic rock/80's songs seeing as I grew up listening to the originals - thank my parents.) but there is one I actually like and appreciate for it's own unique twist and added beat. Lauren Hill and The Fugee's version of "Killing Me Softly."
I do like Roberta Flack's original....but it's much more low key and chill. I tend to gravitate to the cover. Other than this there are really none that I personally enjoy. |
I'm surprised no one has mentioned Deathline International. They have done a few industrial covers like Tainted Love and Rawhide which both kicked much arse.
They are playing at Convergence 13. |
Dissonance's cover of the Beatle's Eleanor Rigby is nine kinds of wonderful.
|
Laibach's cover of Get Back by the Beatles is cooler.
|
I just found a live cover of Wish (NIN) done by Linken Park O_o
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CtnXUHB7Omc |
Cities in Dust -(Sioxsie and The Banshees) Man and Machines
There is just something so deadly and terrifying in their version. It doesn't remind me of lava and sex as it reminds me more of a slow burning nuclear meltdown and mutant zombie sex... Yeah... I know, I'm odd. |
HIM- Wicked Game
NOFX- Stand by me The Offspring- Video Killed the Radio star Cradle of Filth- Devil Woman KoRn- Bricks in the wall AFI- Hanging Garden Disturbed- Shout Limp Bizkit- Behind Blue Eyes Love Spit Love- How soon is now? Hog Hoggidy Hog- African Son Just Jinger- Sugar Man I had a whole list…but I lost it… |

Can't Take My Eyes Off You: Frankie Vallie |
When a band does a cover, pretty much the same way the original band did it, I always wonder... What's the point? I like a band that takes a song and makes it their own. Some of my favorite covers are:
"I Can See For Miles" THEATRE OF ICE "Tainted Love" SOFT CELL "Riboflavin Flavored Non-Carbonated Poly-Unsaturated Blood" 45 GRAVE |
I agree with Miron on the 45 Grave and TOI covers there.
Also, Cinnamon Girl - Type 0 Imagine - A Perfect Circle Solitary Man - Johnny Cash |
I've been dancing around to Santa Esmeralda's cover of Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood for days now.
I Heard It On The Grapevine- The Slits cover is awesome too. |
