Thats interesting. I don't fit into any of these categories. *gasp* Does that mean I'm not gothic!? I do however like that Tribal Goth.
|
You know what? I think this is silly, it's another list of stereotypes that don't really are true. I'm me, I dress like I want to, usually I have to make my own clothes because I can't find anything I like. I appreciate a rather dark aesthetic, and thus I was labelled a goth by society in general. I picked up the label for simplicity. Fairygoth or any of the other things you've mentioned in your list does not describe anyone as closely as the word "myself".
|
Deary me. Goth is this & goth is that. Fair enough it is a bit of a genre spanner, but it's silly trying to cut it down into more groups.
|
You forgot kittygoth! :P
|
I'm Goth. Just Goth. I'm not a big fan of the labels within labels.
|
I do like labels. I find them useful.
But why should I say Spanish Mustang, Thoroughbred, or Swedish Warmblood, when I can more easily say Horse? |
well is you want a Spanish Mustang, it's easier to say that, then describe the traits of one and have the other person figure out what you mean. It depends on the siuation.
|
The one thing that I wonder about is where did these "labels inside of labels" come from? The second thing that makes me wonder is what purpose do they actually serve? Are all these "types of goth" based entirely on how you dress or is it something more.
If it is just based on what one wears, it makes me worry that goth is becoming more about fashion and less about the music. |

http://www.hostingfiles.net/files/20...y_cemetery.jpg The Vampire goth is wearing a cross. Seems out of character. But it's a free country. (I think it was a mislabled photo.) Our dear Poupee Celestia (who hasn't posted in a while) has a website somewhere explaining different kinds of goths, but it is in Spanish, just so you know. Can't seem to find it at the moment, I thought it was at http://www.villagoth.com , but that doesn't respond (?). |
I think the girls in all the pictures are so pretty

Well, i hope, goth wont become more about fashion, then we could label almost all mallgoths as goths. Now that would be a catastrophe! Quote:

What I like about these specific types of gothic looks is that when one of my friends asks me something like "why do you limit your wardrobe to only goth?" I can say something like "Oh, but there is an ample variety in goth. There's *insert several of the above gothic styles*, et cetera. Don't you limit your wardrobe more to only preppy?"
It's a fun way to respond that has had produced a couple of laughs, although I only use it when I feel overly antagonistic. More often I just prefer to say "It's not my taste that really limits my clothes so much as money." |
By the way, i found those in russian:

Trench coat: $69 Psycho Jacket: $70 Boots: $129 Various t-shirts: $100 Various shirts: $200 Various pants: $200 Belts: ~$50 Tophat: $10 Bracelets, necklaces and other jewelry: $200+ Approximate total (for the past year): $1,028 US And this doesn't even include music, concert tickets, incense, posters, skulls, ravens, gothic cross decorations for the home and office... |
And I forgot to include weekly drycleaning for all of the previous clothes!
$$$ |
O_O
Expensive as hell. |

Hrm, when you said tribalgoth I expected something along the lines of an incorporation of an ethnic piece of clothing...Disapointing...But then again, I could have misunderstood the whole consept. I tend to do that.
|
I don't really like Labels but if you must call me something i think i best fit in the:
1. Romantic goth Although i prefer the term Victorain Goth but its the same thing basically. |

Different genres of music such as you have listed do not bother me. In my opinion it's just goth music with a different spin on it if you will. The fashion doesn't bother me, I actually quite like the various styles of clothing. What I do find irritating is the emphasis being put on fashion more than music, at least in my area. For example if you don't wear "goth" clothing, you are not goth. That leaves a lot of room open for mallgoths to creep in. |

( I really liked the skeleton arm necklace that looks like it is giving the wearer a stranglehold!) |
I hate the fact that i'm so bad at their language!
|
The only label used is goth.
For example, we are all human, but we have different races. But the word that comes after *insert race here* is always going to be human. They're just adjectives to describe the fashion. |
I liked number 6, 7, and 9.
But anyway....I agree with Jill and Mick. |
Vintage shopping indiewhore record store clerk goth... actaully just scratch the goth there, either that or androgynous gypsy punk glam rock victorian club kid goth... and this is why we don't even try to label Hazel

hey, I know it is hard to find that perfect style and when you do, really, REALLY hard not tp shell out the bucks, but: Czechoslovakian virgin wool trench found at Savers thrift store: $6 Levi jacket i've had for five years easily modified: $29 dollars new, and it already has that "authentic" worn look. steel toe Doc Martens: $128, but free because my company pays for work boots :P t-shirts : 1 pack black t's $4, other cool band shirts found at thrift stores, yard sales, etc., maybe $15 Shirts: same as above, also two longsleeve polartec military style thumbhole long-john shirts, partly silk, free, practically new, through Freecycle ( a great resource if there is a group in your area). Pants: same as above, plus a wonderful pair of faux leather pants for $10, same source., and two pair cammie pants, also from freecycle. Belts: same as above. Jewelry: homemade, plus some made from found objects, reclaimed beads, reworked second hand items, and family hand-me-downs. Hats: found great vintage ones in same as above. second hand sewing machine to customize everything: $20 lace, findings, fabric accessories, jewelry making supplies, fabric, etc., much of which was found second hand or on clearance: maybe $100 (that's my weak spot, but it covered over half the christmas presents i gave this year too :P ) so, a wardrobe for under $200......this year. and i still manage to "scare" the crap out of my co-workers....although that may have more to do with mentioning i make custom bondage-style jewelry....and like knives, want to learn gunsmithing, etc. All i'm saying is you don't HAVE to fork out the cash, although it is fun once in a while, especially if you find the "perfect" thing. |
as for labels, they are useful. classification can describe things. but, some things are beyond classification. or don't fit the system built to classify them. the whole goth label thing is just something kind of fun, and could help a little in describing personal interest.
|
Im a jeans and t-shirt one, mostly, with a little bit of cyber , along with some deathrock/Punk. I dress however i want to. But the Romantic Goth style is one of my favorites, i just don't have the money or the talent to pull it off.
|
Can someone explain me the "Hippy goth"?
I don't understand how that goes. |
I find these sub-labels to the subculture useful only when shopping for clothes on the internet. I couldn't use them for people since most don't fit into just one of the categories. It's sort of like trying to classify someone by clothing brands: "I know you're kinda preppy, but are you a Calvin Klein or Abercrombie and Fitch?". Someone can favour those brands, but no one 'becomes' them.
From the list, I favour mostly Romantic Goth, Corporate Goth and Deathrock styles in my wardrobe. Other elements make appearances though. It's really quite a mess sometimes. |
Visually I am a mix of Romantic, corporate, tribal and vampire :D
|
umm, i think hippie goth is kinda like black ripped broomstick skirts, chunky dreads (not synthetics) , think the whole hippy clothing with dark colors, black, and ripped lace.... but i could be way off...
|
I don't really see how the picture below would classify "hippy" as a gothic clothing style. I always imagined upon hearing the term hippygoth, that the wearer of such a style would be dressed in dark tie-dyes, a lot of beads perhaps? I always imagined a few more bright colours and wools, less makeup, things like that. Well, that's the image that comes to my mind anyway!!!!
|
I read a new one on the 'net last night:
"Beat-Goth". Probably the closest in terms of fashion to what I am. |

Is there Silent Era Goth? You know, style taken from the 20s and 30s?
I seem to mostly dress Hippy Goth judging by those pictures, but I didn't realize it was called that. I'm sure not a hippy. |
The silent era goth is goth in general. I think anyway. The idea of bright eyes and lips, and white faces came from silent movies. Or so it seems.
|
The silent era goth would be me, no actually my make up is more of the Bettie Page type.
|
Well, if I have to label myself (which would be just as useful as it seems to be in Hazie's case) it would be something like "individualistic DIY-ing sometimes- androgynous- looking romantic fairy- rocker- fetish goth with an affection for the clothing of the Medieval ages and of old black- and- white movies". Still, I find this somewhat limiting, considering that I often just wear whatever baggy clothes I can find when I'm at home, and just skipping the make- up and pretty much everything else when I know I won't be going outdoors that day anyway...
|
I noticed, i haven't post yet:D
I'm cyber+deathrocker Never choose one |
I <3 fairy tale rock, everlistend to sky salt (Is being off topic, but can be forgiven due to excitment)
|
Yay! Pretty ladies make heart happy! ...But ah yeah. Drat, I still tend to fall into the corporate-goth look without the cool trench coat. ...One of these days I'll save up the money for one.
|
I'm a mix of everything. If I see something I like I'll buy it (if I have money) . I still like to dress up :P I'm such a little kid sometimes.
|
I don't really know what category I fall into, and I don't really care as I find it a bit ridiculous labeling my sense of style. I just wear whatever I feel comfortable in. ;)
|
Oh...Humane Pain, I felt so moved when I saw you remembered me =´)...well...I´m working on that translation...I´ve had a lot of problems lately...and I started school. And yeah, the web page...I´m so mad, I feel like a want to ripp the host manager´s head off...*evilface*
Meanwhile, here is the list of stereotypes I used...they are a compilation of all the terms I´ve seen in my life: Cementery /Macabre/Death Goth Christian Goth Corporate Goth Cranky/Cynical Goth Cyber Goth/Net.Goth Egypcian Goth Elder Goth Fetish/PVC Goth Gay Goth Geek Goth Gothabilly Gothic ******/Aristocrat Ink Goth Kinder Goth/Spooky Kid/Babygoth Mall Goth Medieval/Romantic/Ren Faire Goth Mopey Goth Oriental/Baby Doll/Schoolgirl Goth Pagan Goth Perky Goth Poseur/Bozy/Wannabe Quantum Goth Raver Goth Uber Goth Vampire Goth Others...(not goth at all) Deathrockers Metalheads Rivetheads Weekenders I´ll post a link with the translation when I´m done. Soon. I Hope.... |
There are way too many labels. Comon labels kind of suck there not really any good. Lol gay goth? You cant tell if there gay and spooky kid, mall goth?? I hope this thread is a joke.
|
YAY! Our dear Poupee is back! :)
|
As I consider it, "labels" do serve a purpose, and that's categorizing similar concepts, styles, etc. We use it all the time; it's the difference between animals and cars. What's tricky is deciding on an official name for these concepts as they become more specific and obscure. I don't mind labeling - but what I dislike is mislabeling, which includes stereotyping.
Anyway, playing within these rules, I must teeter somewhere between Androgyn, Corporate Slave, and a Jeans and T-shirt goth. Given unlimited time, money, and resources however, I'd have a broader range. |
