People talking in theaters

People non-stop talking throughout the movie ...and making sniffling noises too. It should be legal to drag those people out of the theater and beat them with bamboo!!!!!

jacquelinetm 01-27-2007 08:09 PM

That's why I usually wait until movies come out on DVD. I remember going to a horror movie with my mom, when the first "Friday, the 13th" came out. It was actually kind of funny, though, listening to the crowd screaming at the screen as if the actors would survive if only they had listened to the movie audience.

Godslayer Jillian 01-27-2007 11:15 PM

I'm one of the people that talks in the movies. I'm funny though.;)
Like in the movie The Nativity Story, I got so much material out of the plot that I couldn't keep quiet.
What kinds of things did I come up with?
Oh, just some stuff like relating an old shepherd and the un-born messiah with a dildo.

MotherofMercies 01-27-2007 11:27 PM

I can't help it especially if the movie is shit. One time, at a real sentimental part of a movie (can't remember which one) I snorted really loudly. The whole theatre was in hysterics.

ArtificialOne 01-28-2007 12:03 AM

Hold still while I get the bamboo...
I did say something during one fo the batman movies while he was trying to tell his gf who he really was.. Iblurted out "He's batman bitch!"
It was funny and everyone thought so too..it was at a one dollar cinema when they used to have them...

GirlsNotMe 01-28-2007 12:16 AM

Man, I go CRAZY in movie theatres. I recently attended a showing of the hilariously bad "Turistas" and there was only one couple in the entire theatre besides my group of friends. Poor them, it was probably impossible for them to enjoy the flick.

Though, honestly, I don't think they would have enjoyed it had we been quiet, either. Hehe.

c130 01-28-2007 03:29 AM

I hate people talking over ANY movie, whether it's in the cinema or on DVD or on TV. My dad's one of those people who just HAS to say every notion that comes into his head, so he'll say it quietly in my ear and continue thinking he's awsome while I ignore him or glare at him. >_> In school, when we used to be allowed to watch movies at the end of term, when people started chatting over it I'd be like "STFU" and the teacher would tell both of us to be quiet.

I really don't understand why certain people talk over things like when you're watching the news and for once it's something that interests you, but there's a person that talks over it and you can't hear anything... that makes me want to scream out "STFU!!!! For a second... can you please STFU?" ;}

My father's Israeli, and when we went to see Munich, he kept on shouting out the names of some Israeli actors in bit-parts, a lot of them he grew up with.

"Hey! Yehuda Levi!"

No one knew who that was, and no one really cared. :P

When my mom took me back to Munich, she showed me the apartment building where the Israelis had been held hostage... it was across from the entrance of the Olympic (indoor) swimming pool. I guess this was only a few years after it had happened. I didn't really know much about it, then, because I was a child, but I did feel sad, looking at the apartment building.

Super Spright 01-28-2007 07:00 AM

I ALWAYS talk during movies. The ENTIRE thing too.

DarkHeartedDemoness 01-28-2007 07:12 AM

Last night I went to DreamGirls with my parents, and the woman next to me jiggled her leg the WHOLE TIME. Normally I wouldn't mind, but it shook my seat THE WHOLE TIME.

c130 01-28-2007 07:29 AM

That's why they put drink holders in the armrests between chairs. Just lean down and accidentally knock your iced Coke onto the lap of the source of your irritation... Pretend to be sorry.

Delicate_Torture 01-28-2007 07:51 AM

People in Australia don't do the 'talking in cinema's' thing as much as they do in the USA. I remember a few years ago being in Brooklyn with my friend Toph and my girlfriend Tracey. We went to see Kill Bill and the entire theatre was literally empty except for the two men who came and sat directly behind us. I shit you not. In the two seats in the row behind us so they had to look over our heads.

We watched the film with their commentary all of the way through it. "Why is she doing that? Who is that person? Why aren't any of them talking? This film is stupid."

I turned around and politely said "Excuse me, we are trying to watch the film, do you mind speaking a little more quietly?" To which one of the said "Who the fuck do you think you are, lady?" So I said "I'm the bitch who is going to stretch your scrotum over the top of your head and use it to tie your mouth shut, now shut the fuck up... please."

At this stage Tracey grabbed me and pulled me away and explained that if I who am very capable of taking care of myself, started a fight with them then our weedy geek friend who I love dearly, Toph, would be the one getting beaten up because that is apparently what happens in Brooklyn.

They will ruin a movie, but they won't hit a girl. Good to see some priorities in action.

c130 01-28-2007 08:09 AM

Hahahahah!

You should've carried out your threat. Then taken pictures.

Delicate_Torture 01-28-2007 08:13 AM

I could have, but that would have involved touching a scrotum... and I try to do that as little as possible.

It's a lesbian thing.

Crying_Crimson_Tears 01-28-2007 08:44 AM

To me if it is a good movie, I won't talk. If I hate it, I will. If it's something terrible, I'll listen to what other people have to say, I won't even pay attention to the movie. If I'm with a friend, I always talk, I can't help it. I'm from Connecticut, I talk a lot. :)

When I saw the movie "When a Stranger Calls" I pretty much laughed my ass off through the entire movie. It was so cheap and poorly made. It was a horrible movie.

Mir 01-28-2007 02:08 PM

Good movies/Bad Movies, are a relative concept. You might like one that others do not and they will talk through it. Would'nt that piss you off? And vice versa. Being considerate of other people is a notion that has been phased out and rendered obsolete I suppose.

ArtificialOne 01-28-2007 02:29 PM

Couldn't agree with you more Mir. It seems being polite and respective has become extinct.

Delicate_Torture 01-28-2007 02:30 PM

I remember sitting through Branagh's version of Much Ado About Nothing (on the third or fourth time I'd seen it) behind two little old ladies who kept asking each other "What did he say??" In the end one turned to the other and said "If this movie wasn't going to be in English they should warn people."

Then again, when I first saw the film it was with a group of friends from Uni who were as horrified as I was to discover that Branagh had cast Keanu Reeves as Don John. When he uttered (in that awful Californian accent that has no place in a Shakespearian work set in Mecina) his first line which was "I thank you: I am not of many words, but I thank you." we stood and applauded. Yes! Keanu will not be a man of many words!

LMFAO... that's the same thing Keanu did in The Matrix. He was doing so well, in character, but then he says that one line that blows him back to the "Bill & Ted" days... "I know Kung-Fu". ;}

Delicate_Torture 01-28-2007 03:00 PM

LOL.

I'm certain to this day that Branagh cast him as Don John JUST so that would be his first line.

ashleyxnicole 01-28-2007 03:19 PM

I just throw gummy bears at them.

ArtificialOne 01-28-2007 03:22 PM

I kicked one persons chair... and it scared the crap out of them. It was hilarious. And also, they then shut up the rest of the movie... Hah! If I owned my own theater I'd install buzzboxes in each chair and buzz people everytime they got out of line! lol

Geo_Toni 01-29-2007 07:01 AM

I tend not to talk through films... unless they're an absoulty bore fest and i can not escape!
But i remember watching an interview with Vincent price, and he went to a cenima to see one of his films, to see what the audience thought of it. anyways, he had these two annoying teenage girls infront of him being right annoying, talking, saying its crap etc etc... so at the end of the film, he lent forward and whispered in that wonderful voice of his "so ladies, did you enjoy the film?" Both girls screamed and legged it!
I would've paided soo much to had seen that!

LegendGirl 01-29-2007 02:54 PM

I can go you one better than talking in the theater...

At least twice in my life, someone has brought a BABY to the film. If the baby is asleep, it's perfectly quiet, but as soon as it wakes up...

my word, people are stupid.

ArtificialOne 01-29-2007 03:11 PM

Vincent Price kicks ass!!!

And yes, taking babies and young kids to theaters is a big no no. Unless they are there for a babies or kid's movie... Get a babysiter or wait to till the film comes out on dvd.

And why can you buy a 2lt bottle of coke for 2 dollars but they charge you five bucks for a medium at the theater!!!! grrrrrrRRR!!!!

Kraven de Sade 01-29-2007 04:23 PM

The closest I come to talking through movies is snoring, and that's only if the movie really sucks.

Delicate_Torture 01-29-2007 05:14 PM

I love Japanese horror films and I do enjoy the remakes of them, if only for the interest of seeing how the directors and writers have coped with trying to communicate things that are ingrained within Japanese culture to a Western audience.

I was impressed with The Grudge, and was waiting patiently... or, rather impatiently for The Grudge 2 to be released in Australia. The thing about most Japanese horror films that I love, and that The Grudge used really well, is the use of silence to increase a feeling of anxiety within the audience when something is happening in the film.

There were a group of underage people who were in the cinema-it was rated R+18 which here means that it is restricted to an 18+ audience only-and these people giggled and chattered all of the way through the previews, which annoys me, but I took some deep breaths and told myself that they would shut up for the movie.

The film started and they kept talking. I got up and asked them to be quiet. They shut up for about 29.7 seconds. I got up again and told them to be quiet. I listened to the 'fucking fat goth' comments follow me back to my seat. I then went out and explained the problem to the manager of the cinema. He was really lovely and helpful and kicked the entire lot of them out. However, by this stage the feel of the movie was ruined and the 'feel' of these particular horror films is actually a large part of the atmosphere created in a deliberate way for the audience to participate in while watching the movie. When I went outside to explain this to the cinema manager he offered my girlfriend and I a total refund as well as free tickets to another session of The Grudge 2. I was SO impressed with the way that he dealt with the entire situation.

Unfortunately when Tracey and I left the cinema the group of 'children' (about 15 or 16y.o.) were still outside along with the one 'adult' who had apparently been with them and bought the tickets. He was incensed that his friends and he had been booted out of the film and that the cinema had refused to refund his money.

I made the mistake of laughing at the fact that he had even asked for a refund after being kicked out for such behaviours and ended up with a slap in the face and a split lip for the effort. It was still worth the laugh, though.

Although generaly unimpressed with customer service in Aus. There were a few times that In thought it shown through...I just wished they had more free drink refills....grrrrr!!!!

ArtificialOne 01-29-2007 05:41 PM

Oh god what happened to what I typed?

Ok here it is again.

Overal I was unimpressed with customer service in aus. It did shine through quite well if I had to call a customer service number, or go to the bank. I just wish there was free drink refills in more restuarants!!!lol
Grrrrr!!!

Delicate_Torture 01-29-2007 08:56 PM

A lot of people from the USA are unimpressed with customer service in Australia when it comes to certain areas. I think that a lot of the time it is because the wages for certain service jobs in Australia are decent and the workers aren't reliant on their tips as they are in the USA.

ArtificialOne 01-29-2007 09:24 PM

True....... I never found anyone rude.. just not that willing to actually help, most would stand around and chat and flirt with other kids. And don't get me started on the 16yr old who nagged and whined at Wendy's near Kmart..OMG! I wish I coulda beat that girl... I can't see how she stayed employed....

Delicate_Torture 01-29-2007 11:01 PM

Goddess, don't get me started on any 16 year old with a job.

It is a rare teenager who should be allowed to work in any area that has ANY access to the public. Let them stock shelves or change toilet paper. Do not put them in customer service positions until they can like spell the word service without like saying things like S.E.R.like.V.I.like.C.E.and.like.yeah.

And for Goddess sake, you worthless blonde little cunt, spit out your gum, close your mouth and do your fucking job. I don't want to spend 20 minutes listening to you complain that your boyfriend is fucking your sister. Seriously, if I were in a relationship with you I would be cheating on you as well... JUST TO GET SOME PEACE AND FUCKING QUIET.

OCD Insomnia 01-30-2007 12:28 PM

Oh man...I can't stand people talking in the movies unless the movie is horrible. My fiance wont shut his mouth if his life depended on it. Normally I get so annoyed I just start kissing him with one eye twards the movie. It tends to work until I need a breathe of air. Ive actually thrown a ex-large pepsi in some guys lap for talking. if i recall it was the beginning of lord of the rings...I took my mom for her birthday and the man was talking about his dog to a stranger.

Clockwork 01-31-2007 08:03 PM

I don't remember any severe instances with people talking through a film, although I am continually annoyed when my mother insists on blabbering nonstop any time we're watching a movie at home. Even if other people are present, and it's obvious they want to focus on it, she won't stop.

Babies are different though. Shame on parents that bring them into theaters.

That man possessed such style...

rawrwithcows 01-31-2007 09:24 PM

I'm fine with the talking sometimes, well... sometimes.. What annoys me most, is when the person behind me, kicks my chair. It's annoying enough that the person is chewing their popcorn like it's some sort of competition. (The noise that people make when they eat something really bugs me..).

Since I'm so small, it's also annoying when a really really TALL person just sits in front of me, but I can't really blame them.. oh well.

Meow.

LaBelleDameSansMerci 02-02-2007 06:13 PM

They need to slope the theatre floors more. One of the lecture halls on campus slopes down toward the front, except for the front 5 rows, which slope UP toward the front, so the 2nd to about 8th rows are absolutely useless. However, there's not enough seats in the place that no one has to sit in those rows. That and people tend to fill those rows up first, leaving the back with some free seats... which is good for me, cuz I'm usually late and like to sit at the back for speedy exit.

Anyway, I have two stories about people being annoying in movie theatres.
My dad's friend likes to talk through movies. He thinks he's being all observant and witty when he says "Oh, and then he has an epiphany realizes how much fuller life is out at the vinyard house..." When it's completely obvious. I've sometimes been tempted to say "Yes, I know it's completely and utterly predictable. You don't need to remind me." Some other times, I've been tempted to give him a good elbow in the ribs. Then he has his bag of glosset raisins, which he crams his hand into noisily, as if he thinks he'll impress people by how much he can rustle and crackle his bag. He does it with popcorn too. And slurps his drink, even when it's full. He's a diabetic, and for every movie he goes to (he goes probably 2 or 3 times a week), he gets a large bag of popcorn and gets it so margiarine-ished up that it starts soaking through the bag, and his bag of glossets. He's gonna die in a few years at that rate.
Anyway, my parents and I always fight over who has to sit next to him. Inevitably, I'm the one who has to, because they're my parents so they're the authority figure.

My other story is about this guy who sat right beside me in a nearly-empty theatre. He seemed rather mal-adjusted, so pity chokes my spleen at least a bit...
Anyway, he would laugh GLEEFULLY at the most inappropriate parts, and shake his knees and stomp his feet as he did so. He slurped his drink and rustle and drop popcorn everywhere, and made many nasty comments, sometimes at no-one in particular, sometimes at me.
Oh, and he smelled.

But, being the passive, meek person I am, I just sat there and quietly seethed.
