I'm new to the gothic scene: Fashion suggestions?

I'm completely new to all of this, and I'm going to list what I personally have thought about wearing, and if anything is out of place or wrong, simply let me know.

Well, I'm a guy, and am wanting a more edgy goth look.
What I have thought about doing:

Wearing black boots or skate shoes
Wearing slightly baggy black pants
Wearing dark blue t-shirt, or a hottopic shirt.
Wearing a black leather jacket overtop of the shirt.
Dying my hair very dark blue.
Wearing some face makeup, but not too overboard.

You are all welcome to suggest different ideas of course.

Hidden Rage 09-27-2005 11:06 PM

Yeah, I'm being very specific on what I want to wear because I want to make sure everything is right. I have been told that all goths dress differently, so it shouldnt matter, but I want you guys' opinions, after all you know what's fashionable in the culture, I don't . . yet.

Demonista_Ravenesque 09-27-2005 11:33 PM

Rarely ever...do young guys....become goths (It's mostly girls in Australia that choose to follow this subculture), I congratulate you. But right now, what's fashionable in the subculture is....The Drag Queen/Androgenous *I think that's how you spell it* Look....Hot Topic will make you a consumer whore :)

Well, I know that alot of young guys become goiths where I live, but they don't truly want to become gothic, they only do it because they want attention. So I guess it's kinda rare these days that someone my age joins up because they honestly want to lead this type of lifestyle, like I do.

And you do it because... ? Because of what?

mortalitas incomitatus 09-28-2005 08:57 AM

just do what feels natural sexy baby.

try every thing once and then you find what suits you and what makes you happy.

the trick is not to listen or care about what others say or think (especially other guys your age, they are usually wayy too young and immature) 'cos lots of people will try to intimidate of push you down.

Dont Listen!!!! cant stress that enough!!!!

be happy be sexy. goth boys are yummy!

Because I know what being a true part of the Goth subculture is all about, and I simply want to dedicate my lifestyle to that end.

I want to look good to other Goths, but not to the mainstream public. I could care less what they think of me. Sure, people are gonna look, but that's not why I want to become gothic. Hell, if I wanted attention, I'd become something else other than Goth. ;)

and how!
But seriously, some part of the Gothic culture is fashiona nd what you wear to portray a message to you folks, now think real hard what that could be....dummy.

I feel that the clothing style you choose should somehow represent what your attitude is, not what everyone else is wearing. Or maybe that's what you were saying, idk.

angleangel_doom 09-28-2005 02:54 PM

Yeah thats what I was saying.

Jane13 09-28-2005 03:35 PM

Do what feels right. Also, you don't have to look girly to look gothy... it's just a plus ^.^ Hot topic is genrally frowned on in excess (I say in excess becasue there are SO many threads hijacked by wheather or not hot topic sucks). Notice he's also said he's "new to the scene". That's actually impressive to me. Instead of saying Ho du i b GOTHIXXX!11! you seem to realize that you're not changing yourself, just changing your outward appearance to match your personal aesthetic. Good luck!

Kettu 09-28-2005 04:31 PM

This is just me but if I was you, I would :

Stop labeling myself anything!

Go out and shop for myself, not question the board. Your a semi big boy, We trust you to make your own choices.

introduce myself.

use spell check.

but hey, thats just me. It also sounds like your going for a more "I love BAM" kinda look, and thats cool. to each his/her/it's own.

They steal your underwear and then make you believe that it was all your idea in the first place..

Then when you're completely relaxed and swinging free;

Trash all of the stuff that you wear just to fit in to what is concidered goth in your area. After doing that, go to a store that is not in the popular culture this will ensure that no one has what you have or you can do try this faq - http://anon.razorwire.com/real-goth-faq/ - to be a pop culture/poser goth, anyways just do stuff you do not see. The real purpose of dressing this way is to be different from the rest in your own way while enjoying it.

Black Gestalt 09-30-2005 06:15 PM

Not... the shirt...

I'm a younger guy, well, I'm in high school. I wear alot of band clothing, to support the one's I love. Spikey stuff too.

I make alot of my stuff. Or alter it to my tastes.

Kettu 09-30-2005 06:29 PM

dear god(s) shes right! it wasnt my idea at all..

damn you gnomes!

cyberJade 09-30-2005 06:43 PM

You should take the time and learn more about the "goth" culture.
There are plenty of sites with great information...

Courtenay1218 10-09-2005 09:10 PM

Isn't Hottopic owned by The Gap?

Jane13 10-09-2005 09:19 PM

I beleive that's right, Courtenay.

Oui, je sais, 'cause otherwise you'd have remembered that 2nd is written as deuXieme.

Here, Kettu, have a brownie.

sartain 10-10-2005 09:08 AM

from across the pond -what's hot topic? goth label? I have just been excited by the UK's embracing of beatnik style this atutumn and have pilfered many black pieces, recreating my own glorious throwback 80's goth style / messy blackness. ahhh. although being only 5 foot 4 I am starting to think that skin tight black jeans may have been an odd choice. oh well. mum's lent me her knee high boots from the 70's, so I'll gain some height, if not dignity, that way instead.

Junk Bond Trader 10-10-2005 09:14 AM

The whole point is you're an individual, right? Personally, I wear what I want. When Bauhaus comes around, I'm going to wear a bright yellow shirt that will blind everyone and send them screaming :)

sartain 10-10-2005 09:21 AM

:) good choice. one of my favourite odd clothing choices was a Peaches t-shirt with her song title "f*ck the pain away" curliqued across the front in pink to a women's rally in which I was participating. I had not really thought this one through, but thankfully electro was quite big at the time, so they recognised the song, and I'm clearly not a misogynistic lady, so all was well.

BOWAHAHAHA. that's some funny shiz-nit!! hee hee hee.

violet.crescent 10-11-2005 02:06 AM

violet takes the young man's question seriously

she has dyed indigo hair of late
dyed with something called, ludicrously, pizazz
(hair has been pale blonde/white and dark chestnut also)

and dresses however she pleases

often in zen robes because she is a priestess in training
often in jeans and hooded sweatshirt because she is a film reviewer
often skyclad when it's warm in her desert
often in white like did a retiring writer of amherst
often in black silk, like a secretary turned bad

she has begun to wonder
very delicately

does anyone tread these boards
who is over the age of thirty

for she too cannot read the semi-numeric language of those
who have never held fountain pens
who have spent hours, perhaps, with his purple badness

it is, this tongue (she thinks), more byzantine and baroque
than that of her beloved
eighteenth century

might she meet others of her scarab-sapphic-sybilline kin

who might be yet more shy than she

Daedalus 10-12-2005 11:18 PM

Alright, I figure instead of making a new thread, why not jack this one. How do you make a pair of BDUs, (Battle Dress Uniform), or camouflage, look gothic, have a lot of black on it, and yet is practical enough that you can run normally, and it is pretty quiet. I am guessing no chains, or anything like that, but what about spikes, etc?

Jane13 10-14-2005 04:02 PM

Hm... I'd go for modifying military surplus. You can find a lot of camo stuff at thrift stores if there isn't and Army Surplus store around where you live.

Daedalus 10-14-2005 04:04 PM

I have the BDUs, now I need to know how to make it so that it has more black on it, and has more spikes, and I can still run in it.

I think the dressing is cool. So, how long is your hair? But, that doesn't matter. And do you have any piercing? You don't have to wear the black leather jacket, if you wanna look simple. Just a black t-shirt or dark blue, that'd be enough. But, if you wanna look stylish, well yea' go ahead. About the hair, I prefer black color. It's okay if you like the dark blue. As long as it dark, ya know ;p Don't stress urself about this whole Goth. You'll look great. Trust me :)

Lament_A_Morte 10-14-2005 10:53 PM

I would personally just do my own thing, which, I do hehe..

I change my style alot.. I don't really know why but I do I enjoy change..

hmmm.. I don't really know what to say except hottopic sucks and you should get

stuff that you personally like from like thrift stores and shit and then alter them to

your liking, just develop your own style..

PS a pic of me!! tell me what you think!!http://pg.photos.**********/ph/evil_n...b1.jpg&.src=ph

Lord knows I haven't had to write in French in five years. :)

Miriel 10-15-2005 06:46 AM

You people are disgustingly lucky. I live in Estonia (anyone know where that is???.. exept for Aetermus), so that means I have to keep my eyes really open to get anything remotely cool to wear. Lately I have bocome attracted to the victorian style... that means I have to sow my own clothes. Hell.. there are only 2 shops where you can get spikes that are made to last. Not talking about the cheap replicas you can get from anywhere, but really goos spikes made from real leather and metal.

Jane13 10-15-2005 03:19 PM

Aw, Mort, you're cute ^.^

Sorry about the bad luck, rage. You know, maybe there are pet store around where you live? Somtimes they have spiked dog collars and things... and they always have chains :p It'd be interesting to see what the pet store owner would think if you told them why you were buying them ^.^
